The most anticipated match-up of the first half of this Champions League season just confirmed the title-favourite for Pro Recco. In an impressive display at home in Sori in front of a packed house the reigning European champions outplayed by many considered main rivals Jug Dubrovnik for a final score of 14-6. The impressive stat line of 9 different goal scorers simply displayed how deep the Recco squad is this season and surely made a difference in the second half where Jug's defensive organisation got more and more outplayed by the varied Recco offence. With Dusan Mandic as leading goal scorer netting a triple, including 2 in a row, the Italian squad remains unbeaten after 4 rounds comfortably leading group B while Jug, after their narrow 10-9 home win over Szolnok, this time suffered their first defeat. Former Recco player Felipe Perrone topped the scorers list for Jug scoring 3 goals including 2 penalty hits.

In the battle for the top position in group A last year's Champions finalist Primorje received another blow on Saturday. In their round 4 match in Berlin facing Spandau, the Croats needed a late goal by Miho Boskovic to force a 9-9 draw. The equaliser by Boskovic, with just over a minute remaining in the match, marked the end of a tough encounter for the Croatian champions who trailed most of the match and saw the German home side again grabbing the lead in the final period as Mehdi Marzouki scored with 3.45 on the clock for the 9-8 score. A final answer came from top scorer Boskovic (3 goals) but in the end the visitors survived an exclusion for Cosmin Radu to hold on to the 9-9 score and earned the point.

Pro Recco vs. Jug match report

The game started off focussed but slowly. Both teams clearly set up the organisation, especially on defence which resulted in lots of contested shots and few goals. For Recco the opportunities mainly came in the counter attack while Jug in the second half of the opening period could find more and more the opportunity to try their set plays. However the strong, physical but dynamic Recco defence caused the visitors trouble throughout the first half.

Things clearly changed in the second half. The exclusions back and forth were coming which means more extraman plays and the home team made the most of it with Francesco di Fulvio and Matteo Aicardi scoring consecutive goals while on man up. And after Jug missed a second straight extra man possession, Matteo Aicardi drew a penalty on the other side, converted by Filip Filipovic, Recco started walking away. It led to a growing frustration of Jug head coach Vjekoslav Kobescak who saw several attempts of clear instructions receiving blows after another Recco goal. Jug did score on a penalty shot, by Felipe Perrone, but the following 2 goals by the home side, well played, were another blow in the face of the Croatian defence. First Aleksandar Ivovic tipped in a well-player extra man attack, totally free, and then Niccolo' Gitto was on the end of a fast counter attack to extend Recco's lead. A final goal of the quarter from way out by Paulo Obradovic was nice but only got the half-time score to 6-3.

In the second half things got from bad to worse for the visitors. Recco looked in control and goalkeeper Stefano Tempesti more and more got involved with some nice saves whenever Jug did managed to fire off a shot. That only fired up the squad and the homecrowd who saw Felipe Perrone scoring his only field goal after several attempts as the Jug leading scorer was heavily guarded throughout the match. But the response did not took long. On the other end Dusko Pijetlovic got open quickly on the centre-forward position, received a nice pass and finished technically, yet controlled to set the 3rd-quarter score to 9-4. That looked to have decide the outcome early as in the final period Jug got held even more far away from the goal and on the other end several outside shots were falling. Ivovic fired a bomb and after another Felipe Perrone penalty hit, Dusan Mandic took center stage scoring twice trademark goals the first one coming off a free throw opportunity, buried like only Mandic is capable of. The final highlight was for an active Niccolo' Gitto who saw his defensive work paying off as he netted his 2nd on a man-up play following a timeout for the 14-6 score, which proved to be the final score.
