Fuera quedaban Portugal y Letonia.
12 SELECCIONES FEMENINAS Y 16 MASCULINAS

France, Malta, Georgia, Turkey secure Belgrade 2016 berths

Thanks to a big 10-9 win over Slovakia the French home side secured their 2nd straight European Championships berth while the Slovaks on their part also found themselves sure of the 2016 European Championships as Belarus and Ukraine are too far behind with just one game left this weekend. Another team to obtain historic participance in the European finals is Malta who defeated Poland 8-13 on Saturday at home in the national pool that clinched the second spot in their group with Germany as winners after their crushing triumph over Switzerland: 21-0. Also Georgia made sure their will be back on the European stage following their Budapest 2014 participance by finishing 2nd in group E thanks to a big 6-17 victory over hosts Israel on Saturday. Turkey followed that example obtaining historic qualification claiming 2nd place in Astrakhan, Russia despite an 11-8 loss to home side Russia who clinched the group win while Portugal crush Latvia 0-30. As Turkey already beat Portugal on day 1 their 2nd place is ensured and will be confirmed Sunday when last ranked Latvia awaits.

Spain, France first to confirm Budapest 2014 participation

|Saturday 01 March 2014, 13:29|Tim Hartog

http://www.waterpoloworld.com/News/tabid/169/ArticleId/6421/news.aspx

Spain and France were the first to join the already qualified teams for the upcoming 2014 European Championships in Budapest, Hungary out of the qualification play-offs on Saturday. Spain, playing without stars such as Guillermo Molina, Marc Minguell, lefthander Xavi Garcia and top scorer Albert Español, rolled past Ukraine at home in Mataro 25-6 followed by France who defeated Malta 6-20, both after having won their respective first leg games with clear margins earlier. Although the French side was more or less regarded qualified after a clear leg 1 victory the confirmation on Saturday means they will return to Europe's main international stage after a 13-year absence when, indeed, the 2001 European Championships were held in Budapest as well. The anticipated tense finish of the series between Turkey and Georgia got close as expected. Turkey rallied back on home soil in Istanbul coming back from a 8-4 loss in leg 1 to beat the visitors 12-9 at home. Just a single goal seperated the two sides of forcing a finish with a penalty shootout. But it was not to be as Georgia hung on and survived with a 15-16 aggregate to ensure their participation at the 2014 European champs. A historic one as the team was seeking its first major competition to qualify for and got their reward on Saturday. The remaining games on Saturday produced no furthr upsets as Croatia and Romania posted respective second dominant wins to secure their places at the 2014 European Championships. Paulo Obradovic took off for the 2012 Olympic champions scoring six goals in a 14-6 win over Slovakia in Dubrovnik while Romania held on to a 10-goal margin in the final score against Great Britain, this time in Sunderland, UK. A balanced attack with ten goal scorer led the Romanians, and their new head coach Dejan Stanojevic to another planned but desired European Championships participation. Russia and The Netherlands will determine an overall winner on Sunday.

Sandro Bitadze: "We Will Hold the Toughest Match in Turkey"

In Tbilisi, in swimming complex “Olympic”, the Georgian national water polo team defeated Turkey 8:4 in the first play off match of European Championship. The Georgians have advanced 1:0 in two-match series. The second match will take place in Istanbul on March 1. The team with the best result will be declared as a winner. The Georgians can even lose with 3 goals. In case of losing with 4 goals, the teams will play overtime. So, the Georgians have a chance to play at the final stage of European Championship for the first time.
Georgia-Turkey match caused such a great interest that there was no place to sit or stand. The match started with the advantage of the hosts and they scored goal – 1:0. Soon, the guests equalized score by penalty. Then, the hosts advanced again. The Turkish water polo players fought till the end. Goalkeeper Chumburidze played a key role in our victory. At the last minutes of the match referees sent off our veteran and one of the leaders Rezo Chomakhidze. In spite of that, the hosts managed to keep 4-goal advantage and finally, they won 8:4.
“Olympic” was crowded but the support of the fans was not good. Our team will hold the toughest match in Turkey because the Turkish fans are famous for their support and neither “mistakes” of the referees are excluded in favor of the hosts.
After the match “World Sport” talked to Sandro Bitadze, veteran water polo player and vice-president of the Georgian Water Polo Federation:
“Today we had a very tough opponent which has an experience of playing at European Championship. The boys held the toughest match. I want to thank them for winning this match”.
- Are you satisfied with the referees?
- There were mistakes toward the both teams. Overall, I am satisfied.
- Will Chomakhidze miss the next match?
- Chomakhidze will play in Turkey because this sent off does not consider missing the next match.
- What can you say about the next match?
- We will hold the toughest match. In spite of winning with 4 goals, winner of the play off will be found out in Istanbul.
- Will the Georgian fans attend the match in Istanbul?
- As I know, more than 100 fans are going to attend Turkey-Georgia match. Hopefully, their number will increase.
