Serbia edges Hungary for European junior gold

|Sunday 31 August 2014, 19:44|Tim Hartog

The Serbian juniors have completed an incredibly successful summer for Serbia's men's water polo by claiming the 19 & under European Junior championships after beating Hungary 7-6 in Sunday's gold medal final. Yet anoter victory for the Serbs in a final against Serbia after the senior team had triumphed over the Hungarians in this year's World League Super Final, European Championships and FINA World Cup.
The past week coach Vladimir Vujasinovic and his men emerged as title favorites and with Hungary also reaching the final this year's world's powerhouses were ready to battle for a major honour once again. Serbia came out firing and quickly established a 3-1 lead which was consolidated in the second period as they enjoyed a seemingly comfortable 4-2 lead at half-time. Hungary however looked to turned things around in a strong third-quarter performance. The two-goal deficit was quickly erased as three straight Hungarian goals got the side leading. But the Serbian side did not panic and saw their patience being rewarded in the important final period. In the final minutes their defence was the key to keep Hungary under pressure, mainly in their man-up situations as multiple efforts proved not enough and the final consolation goal came too late as Serbia played out the final 15 seconds before celebrations on an incredible week and summer started in Tbilisi's Olympic pool.

Croatia took the bronze medal as they defeated Italy 8-4 on Sunday while Greece finished 5th thanks to a 12-8 victory over Montenegro. The final day of action started with Spain taking 7th place as they held off Netherlands 7-6.

Serbia-Croatia, Hungary-Italy are the Tbilisi semifinals

|Friday 29 August 2014, 07:38|Tim Hartog

Three out of four countries that saw their senior men's teams reaching the recent 2014 Budapest European championships semifinals had their 19 & under junior teams doing the same in Tbilisi, Georgia on Thursday. Serbia and Italy dominated in their respective quarterfinal matches while Hungary and Croatia received significant more opposition but still managed to advance to the final four. The first of four battles for the semis saw Serbia absolutely stunning friend and foe by holding Greece scoreless as they powered their way to an 0-12 blowout. Hungary was up next but had all troubles with overcoming Montenegro. The magyars led throughout but saw Montenegro coming back to trailing just a single goal on four occasions in the second half. However the György Horkai coached men held on as they edged the Montenegrins 8-9. Croatia also advanced thanks to a 7-9 victory over Spain. A big part of the triumph came in the second period when the Croats turned around a 3-2 deficit into leading 3-4 at half-time. In the final session Croatia secured the two-goal victory. Italy also secured a confident win as they controlled their quarterfinal match-up with the Netherlands from start to finish en route to a 6-13 final score. Now the European Junior Championships in the Georgian capital will see the big powerhouse clashes as Serbia takes on Croatia and Hungary meets Italy for a spot in the gold medal final.

Men's European Junior Championships to start

|Sunday 24 August 2014, 07:22|Tim Hartog
The men's Juniors have gathered in Georgia's capital Tbilisi for the climax of what appeared to be a busy summer. After several participants of the men's 19 & under European title this week participated in the world 18 & under championships in Istanbul just weeks ago, they have to have recharged the batteries for another heated battle. Knowing that the top 8 teams of the 18 & under Worlds were all European teams, it's easy to predict the race for the European title will be as equally tight and heavy. The last 19 & under European champions were Italy winning the 2012 tournament, played in Canet-en-Roussillon, France. The team went on an incredible run also winning the inaugural 2012 18 & under World Youth championships and the 20 & under World Juniors next year in Szombathely, Hungary. Things were different for the Italians in Istanbul this year however finishing only 7th. Coming in as high favorites are Hungary who claimed the gold medal in Istanbul and thus are the reigning 18 & under world champs. Spain finished runners-up while both Russia and Serbia, 3rd and 4th ranked respectively, proved to be title contenders as well. Most of these players will appear in this European Junior Championships as well, in case of Serbia's Gavril Subotic even with playing the senior FINA World Cup tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan this week as well. In the 16-team competition format claiming 1st place in the group will save you a quarterfinal qualification round and could ease up the tournament. Several favorites however will see fierce opposition in that objective. Both Hungary and Spain were drawn in group B while Serbia and Russia meet in the prelims in group D. Meanwhile Italy headlines group A but Montenego and Croatia look to battle for the top spot in group C after coming off an 5th and 8th place finish at the recent World Youth championships in Istanbul.
