Pro Recco have taken a big step towards clinching Final Six qualification by taking a big 6-12 over Olympiacos from Greece on Wednesday. The hosts were considered outsiders to endanger the three sides now fighting for the final two spots for Barcelona out of group A but were no match to a superior Pro Recco team who quickly got up in front 1-3 and never looked back. The all-Croatian battle ended with Jug and Primorje sharing the points; the second time that group leaders Primorje were held to a draw by their main rivals after the 9-9 tie on day 2 in Rijeka. However for Jug gaining three points was the main objective and despite holding the red-hot title favorites to a second draw, the consequences for the Final Six race in group A remain to be seen with Barceloneta adding three points beating ZF-Eger 9-5 at home. For Primorje it means they are through to the semi-finals in Barcelona as group winners now leading the other teams by at least four points with just one more round to play.

Partizan came close to upsetting group B leaders Radnicki in their all-Serbian battle at the Banjica pool in Belgrade Wednesday. Radnicki, once again led by Filip Filipovic who scored three goals, looked comfortable throughout the game a 0-4 start in the opening period got the Uros Stevanovic' coached side in the driver's seat before Partizan made a big comeback in the fourt period that needed Radnicki to score the ultimate winner to secure another three points and extend their unbeaten status to on the verge of the entire ten-round group stage.

Barceloneta rebounded from their 11-6 loss to Pro Recco on day 8 by convicingly beating ZF-Eger at home on Wednesday 9-5. The home side, hosts of the upcoming Final Six, saw Eger grabbing a slim 1-2 lead at quarter time but wasted no time in turning around the score in the following two quarters. In fact, from there on the win for Barceloneta was not in danger as they even extended the margin by one goal in the final eight minutes to win by four in the end.

In group B German record champions Spandau recorded a 10-6 win over Galatasaray in a game without too many consequences for the standings in group B as only now the Germans seem to have secured 4th place. Captain and main offensive threat Moritz Oeler led the way scoring three goals for Spandau who walked away from their opponents in the second period and with a three-quarter time score of 7-4, pretty much had sealed the deal.

Brescia confirmed their second spot in group B by rolling past last ranked Romanian representative CSM Oradea in the final match on Wednesday. Right from the start Brescia made clear that no surprise was in the air walking away to a 6-1 lead at quarter-time and even doubling that margin in the second period for the 12-3 half-time score. With Christian Presciutti and Guillermo Molina scoring four goals, closely followed by left-hander Ugo Crousillat with three, the home side was onstoppable and cruised to the big win.

Final Six race in CL group A heats up

|Tuesday 08 April 2014, 13:13|Tim Hartog
© Lucio Vidotto
With the three teams sure of Final Six participation out of group B now known, the attention on the final two days of action in the Champions League preliminary phase shifts to the highly competitive group A where still a final decision is to be made. Two particularly big matches are to be contested in Dubrovnik, Croatia and Piraeus, Greece on Wednesday in round 9 of the prelims. Jug hosts current group leaders Primorje in a much anticipated all-Croatian match-up between two teams favorite to meet again in this year's Adriatic league final next weekend in Zadar, Croatia where that Final Four will be played. And after Jug got away with a 9-9 tie in Rijeka on day 2 of the Champions League preliminaries Primorje will be looking to decide the head-to-head series in their favor and more or less clinch the group's top spot and thus Final Six semi-finals. But Jug is desperate for points as they are one of the three teams currently battling for the two remaining places in this group and don't want to fall behind in this final phase of the ten-round group stage. Because main contender Pro Recco will be playing Olympiacos in Greece in another thriller that easily can be considered a 'six-point game' for both sides. Especially for Olympiacos, who are basically fighting for a last chance of re-entering Final Six contention, a surprising win over Pro Recco would be more than welcome. Not an easy task considering the 9-7 loss in Italy on day 2 and the current form of the reigning Italian champion although the results in the Champions League are not quite the same as in the domestic league where the Pino Porzio coached side is dominating. After two straight defeats from the hands of Primorje the day 8 match-up with Barceloneta was won 11-6 thanks to a balanced attack. But it could just turn out to be the ferocious defence that Pro Recco displayed during their dominant run towards the 2012 Euro League title under head coach Porzio that proves to be decisive on Wednesday in Greece in order to stop the versatile and effective Olympiacos offence, especially on man-up.

In the third game in group A Final Six hosts Barceloneta host last ranked ZF-Eger, who are still seeking points in order to meet with the expectations, or even conditions, set by the club's management until the end of the season. Six points mean winning the upcoming final two games of the preliminaries and with visiting Barceloneta and Recco on day 10, that is no easy task. Barceloneta on the other end will be looking to show they are a legitimate Final Six contender, despite already being sure of qualification as hosts, and after the clear five-goal loss to Pro Recco the Chus Martin coached squad, last year's Final Four bronze medalists, will be hoping to return to the form they displayed in the first half of the preliminary campaign where they surprisingly topped Primorje, Jug and ZF-Eger and held Pro Recco to a 10-all draw on day 3.

Group B

One match in particular stands out in the three scheduled encounters in group B on Wednesday. The all-Serbian encounter between Partizan and Radnicki, both sure of Final Six participation, is special as the teams are currently in the midst of a Serbian championsip play-off semi-final series where Radnicki took game 1 led by Boris Zlokovic and Filip Filipovic at home last Saturday beating Partizan 12-8. The Partizan defence, so much emphasized by coach Vladimir Vujasinovic, saw the two Radnicki stars scoring five goals apiece and stopping these two major threats will be one of the main focus points in Wednesday's meeting in the Banjica pool in Belgrade. Three days later Partizan will have its second opportunity battling the favorite side at home as game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for next Saturday in Belgrade as well. Although having lost all matches against Radnicki this season Partizan knows they are a legitimate threat to Kragujevac-based side falling just short two goals on day 2 of this Champions League 8-6.

In the other games German record champion Spandau hosts Turkish champion Galatasaray in what looks to be the battle for fourth place in group B. Both teams proved to be close in the first meeting in Istanbul where a 9-9 final score was reached. But with either team out of contention for the Final Six, and Spandau coach András Gyöngyösi announcing to part ways with the club after this season, it remains to be seen what Wednesday's encounter will bring. The final game of the day will be played in Brescia where the home team faces last ranked CSM Oradea. The teams first meeting, back in Romania on day 2, saw the ever-tough Oradea side living up to their status at home although Brescia still proved too strong winning 6-10. And for this day 9 match-up the Romanian hopes of an upset will not be much higher as they play a confident Brescia team in second place in the group and the Italian league well underway to an exciting finish of their season. Like Oradea the Alessandro Bovo coached squad is particularly strong at home only losing to Radnicki in a tight game 8-9 so far this Champions League campaign.
