Pro Recco eliminate reigning champs in shootout
Waterpolo World | | | Saturday 09 November 2013, 16:00 | | | Tim Hartog |
A penalty shootout was needed but eventually 2012 Champions League winning side Pro Recco will be present in this year's preliminary round as well. On Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia the Italians saw Marko Avramovic hitting a later 'equalizer' with just 1.4 seconds on the clock to create the four-goal lead that reigning champs Crvena Zvezda were so much looking for to force a penalty shootout after the 9-5 final score out of leg 1 in Italy two weeks ago. In that series Recco prevailed and despite some spectaculair goalkeeping by Zvezda-goalie Denis Sefik all
game long, the Serbs lost a shootout that included 5 misses by 3-2 as Pro Recco qualified for the preliminary round group A along with ZF-Eger (HUN), Atletic-Barcelona (ESP), Jug Dubrovnik (CRO), Olympiacos Piraeus (GRE) and either Hungarians Szolnok or Croatian runners-up Primorje Rijeka. The regular time finish that Avramovic scoring the shootout-forcing goal was quickly vanished as Strahinja Rasovic could not get past Recco-goalie Stefano Tempesti in the decisive penalty shot attempt after Recco's Alex Giorgetti had missed the one before to keep Zvezda alive. The spectaculair game, in regulation mostly decided by goals from extra man, included highlights from Pietro Figlioli, three goals in the third period by Strahinja Rasovic and of course the hit by Marko Avramovic from the right wing on man-up with just 1.4 remaining. Figlioli and Aleksandar Ivovic finished as top scorers for Recco with two each while Strahinja Rasovic scored three for Zvezda.
CSM Digi Oradea also made it to the Champions League preliminary round. In the second of two third round playoff meetings with Sintez Kazan on Tuesday the Russians managed to post a 10-7 win at home but it was not enough to overcome the 5-goal deficit from leg 1 as the Romanians are the first team to make to the group stage after a three-round qualifying phase. Home side Kazan looked to bounce back from the 13-8 defeat suffered in Romania just over a week ago taking a 6-2 lead at half time but as tough as the defending Romanian champs are that was all Kazan could get. In a difficult third and fourth term the visitors kept up and successfully secured their lead from leg 1. The remaining three matches will be played on Saturday. Oradea was to be drawn in group B along with Galatasaray, Spandau Berlin, AN Brescia, Partizan Belgrade and Radnicki Kragujevac who secured their spot in the prelims on Saturday eliminating Vouliagmeni. The Greek side managed to win leg 2 by a close single-goal margin, 6-5, but that was not enough after the clear 11-5 defeat in Serbia two weeks ago. Slavko Gak netted two goals against his former team while Filip Filipovic added a pair as well for last year's Euro Cup winners. The final team to qualify for the prelims went on to be Primorje who topped Szolnok 8-7 at home in a tough match after both sides had drawn level 10-10 in leg 1 in Hungary two weeks ago. And the Hungarian visitors seemed ready for an upset as they used a big second period to take a 2-6 lead at half time. But home side Primorje, finalist in 2012, struck back thanks to nice third session and even better 2-0 run in the fourth quarter to win 8-7, just enough to eliminate the Hungarian runners-up. Standout Xavi Garcia not only scored a team-high three goals but netted the winner as well with just 1.19 on the clock to secure the single-goal victory. Primorje will complete group A, along with Pro Recco coming in from the qualification phase.

CSM Digi Oradea qualifies for Champions League prelims
Waterpolo World | | | Tuesday 05 November 2013, 16:42 | | | Tim Hartog |
CSM Digi Oradea have made it to the Champions League preliminary round. Home side Kazan looked to bounce back from the 13-8 defeat suffered in Romania just over a week ago taking a 6-2 lead at half time but as tough as the defending Romanian champs are
that was all Kazan could get. In a difficult third and fourth term the visitors kept up and successfully secured their lead from leg 1. The remaining three matches will be played on Saturday. Oradea was to be drawn in group B along with Galatasaray, Spandau Berlin, AN Brescia, Partizan Belgrade and the winner of the Vouliagmeni-Radnciki matchup.
