Waterpolo World| Sunday 10 November 2013, 11:45 | Tim Hartog
Two games were played in group H in Montpellier, France on Sunday to conclude the 2014 European Championships qualification group phase. The top two teams were not endangered and already sure of their finish even though second seed Ukraine already finished playing on Saturday. Home side France gave the fans at the Antigone pool in Montpellier plenty of moments to cheer as Czech Republic was trashed 24-3 in the final game on Sunday. In the first encounter Poland finished their qualification phase on a positive note beating Denmark 9-12. Undefeated group winners France will now meet either Turkey, Macedonia or The Netherlands as the respective 12th, 11th and 10th place finishers team from the previous European Championship edition (2012) while Ukraine is up for a tough battle with Croatia, Romania or Spain who finished as 9th, 8th and 7th respectively.

With a game against hosts and second seed Great Britain the Russians could close out the three-round 2014 European Championships qualification group phase in style and so they did. The home side managed to stay quite close for three quarters but had to let Russia go in the final term as they went on to win 6-13 and complete an undefeated run while being ready for the home-and-away based play-off match-up

with direct qualification for the 2014 Europeans at stake. Israel had gained their only points of the weekend in Sunderland, Great Britain in the first of two games on Saturday beating Moldova 22-7. And therewith action in group I was concluded with the two clear best sides confirming their spots in the play-off round as one of the bottom six ranked sides from the 2012 championships in Eindhoven will await them. Meanwhile in Montpellier, France the home team proved to be the clear top side in of the tournament after a 21-9 rout of Ukraine on Saturday. Ukraine suffered their first defeat and finished the weekend playing but are already sure of the second place finish and thus a spot in the play-off round. For France reaching that achievement as well as topping the group seemed already a sure thing after day 1 of action in group H. The 21-9 final score, with Brescia star Michael Bodegas scoring seven goals, only confirmed these expectations. In group G, played in Porto, Portugal it was Slovakia who created a nice results by topping group leaders Georgia 16-17 in a head-to-head duel. It will probably not be enough to create an upset that would bring the Slovakians the group win but it certainly will help building confidence on the way to a probable second place finish and presence in next round's play-offs. Malta meanwhile posted a second win of the weekend holding off home side Portugal 8-6 as they claimed third place in the group. Action will be concluded on Sunday.

Only in group G, played in Porto, Portugal early session matches were to be contested on Friday. And in the first two games the pair of top sides of the group took a firm grip on the table. Slovakia posted a clear 5-14 victory over Switzerland while Georgia used a 0-5 start against second place contender Malta on their way to winning 4-11. Home side Portugal celebrated their first win of this third round holding off Belarus 11-7 after trailing 0-2 at quarter time. Slovakia even confirmed their spot by eliminating rivals Malta 18-9 in a head-to-head meeting in the evening session in Portugal. Georgia continued winning this time leaving Belarus no chance in what went to finish in a 8-goal victory for the group leaders: 9-17. Meanwhile in France, Denmark suffered a tough 9-10 defeat to Ukraine. The Danish side led 9-7 with four minutes remaining before Ukraine scored three straight goals to walk away with the win in what was their first lead of the game. Home side France cruised past Poland after a sloppy start with many chances but few goals in the first period the French started rolling and walked away to the clear win, still leading the way in group H. No surprises in group I where favorites Russia and Great Britain once again added three points to their total. The Russians just trashed Moldova 39-3 while hosts Great Britain edged Israel 12-7.

No surprises on Budapest 2014 qualifiers third round opening day

No real surprises but good wins for Ukraine and Malta marked the opening day of the 2014 European championships qualification tournament third round on Thursday. Ukraine took firmer grip of the second place in group H in France holding off Czech Republic 10-13, mainly thanks to a big 0-4 third-quarter performance while Malta convincgly downed Belarus 9-3. Goalie Alan Borg Cole led a solid defence and blocked a penalty in the early stages of the game that went to be a clear six-goal victory in what appears to be a good start to the race for second place in group G, played in Portugal, as Georgia seems out of reach. Current second-seed Slovakia did what was expected in beating hosts Portugal 2-16 so it appears that Malta will be needing points against either Georgia or Slovakia to force a second place upset. With still four games remaining this weekend all options are open. The Georgians meanwhile continued their strong run in this qualification phase with a 24-7 blowout of Switzerland. Group H leading and home side France kicked off their third round by cruising past Denmark 21-5. Meanwhile in Sunder, Great Britain the hosts worked on a big boost for the goal difference crushing Moldova 36-8. Group leaders Russia were in action in the first of two games on Thursday comfortably beating Israel 10-22.
