On game day 3 of the European Water Polo Championships here at Eindhoven, Netherlands, the powerhouse clash between World’s number two Serbia and the European reigning champion Croatia created one of the tournament highlights so far. Eventually the Serbs took a convincing 15-12 victory in a fierce clash in front of almost full stands. Croatia lost Niksa Dobud close to the end of the match for brutality; Serbia`s head coach Dejan Udvocic was red-carded after the third quarter.
Croatia was leading twice in the very beginnings of the match, but Serbia already took command of the game before the changing of sides. Head coach Dejan Udovicic’ players had some minor advantages on the stands and scored several times in decisive moments by amazing goals.
The score was 8-5 to Serbia close the end of the second period. In the third quarter, the Serbs were leading once by four goals, 10-6. Right after the start of the last period, Croatia had caught up three of these four goals, 11-10. In a period full of tension and even tumults in the pool Serbia stroked by three unanswered goals.
Croatia’s Niksa Dobud was excluded in the final period with 41 seconds to go for brutality when he hit Serbia’s Filip Filipovic in the face. The action did not change the outcome of the match decisively, but Dobud will be suspended for the upcoming game. It was not clear in the aftermath of match if the Serbian left-hander is injured.
Serbia brought her record to 3-0-0 after day 3 and could now go for the first place in the difficult Preliminary Round matches of Group B by their own performance. Croatia might face some more pressure as they will now play the convincing Germans in the Saturday clash. For schedule reasons Croatia and Serbia might face each other in the semi-final game again, but it would have been difficult to escape the situation by the draw situation.

Rudić: Previše grešaka u obrani | ||||
|
