Top nations under pressure: the final day scenarios
Waterpolo World
Game day 4 of the men’s tournament had been expected to be one of the boring days of the 2012 European Waterpolo Championships which are currently held in Eindhoven, Netherlands. But Spain’s surprising 10-10 tie against Montenegro and the German late night upset against Croatia has now created a very special scenario for the final day of the group phase. In the matches of Group B - the so-called “death group” after the unusual draw – even five of six teams can still make it to the top three of the group and the top six of the tournament – only Romania is out in this pool for sure.
In this group Serbia is ranking first for sure due to the 4-0-0 record after four matches and will have a day off on the quarter-final day, but four more teams are still going for the medal round spots since the Friday results. Now the Germans could make it to the top three of the group and the top six of these championships on their own by beating last-ranked Romania in the last match. In this case Montenegro or even the reigning champion Croatia would be kicked from the top six; in any case the Germans would pass Croatia in the table due the victory in the head-to-head duel.
Interestingly enough, Croatia now needs help by other teams to make to the top six. This might be a Romanian victory against Germany, but the players from the Balkan have no chance to improve in the table any more and might save power for the upcoming cross-over match against the home team from the Netherlands. It could also be a Serbian victory against Montenegro as well, but the Serbs do not need the points either. The Montenegrins could make it themselves to the top six on their own but they need a victory against Serbia in case the Germans do not lose. And there could be another team most observers do not think about any more. If Germany loses to Romania, the Spaniards simply have to beat Croatia in the head-to-head duel tomorrow.
The situation in Group A is a little bit easier, presenting two simple head-to-head duels. Here Hungary is first for sure due to the victories in head-to-head duels against the next-ranked teams from Italy and Greece as well and will have a day off on the quarter-final day. Italy and Greece will face each other in the second place, the winner is playing the third-ranked team of Group B and could escape the powerhouses Croatia and Montenegro. In the bottom half of this group, home team Netherlands and Macedonia are facing each other for the fourth place. This would grant a top ten ranking and presents two match balls for the ninth place which grants a berth for the FINA Olympic Games Qualification Tournament to be held in Edmonton, Canada.
