Full Game GER-ITA
NED – GBR
For two periods Holland went through some scary moments as the British played an excellent and disciplined game, so the reigning Olympic champions could take a single goal lead against the future Olympics hosts by half-time. And the British even managed to equalise well into the third period for 6-6, but after that the Dutch put everything together and scored four goals in a row in the third and added another two in the fourth quarter while their opponent were unable to find the net any more.
RUS – HUN
Russia’s lethal weapon worked perfectly again: their amazing counterattacks brought them another win and the top spot in the group. Russia’s first wave of counters resulted in a 5-2 lead but that time the Hungarians were strong enough to come back for 5-5. Still, the Russians were quick to answer with two goals and they decided the outcome in the third when further counter-attacks gave them an 11-7 lead. Hungary were done, later they missed a second penalty in the game so they had to settle for the second place in the group.
GER – ITA
The Germans played with ease and managed to keep up with the Italians for a while. In the middle of the second quarter they trailed only 5-6 – but the remaining three minutes saw five Italian goals on five attacks so by half-time the contest was virtually over. Actually, a scoring show was produced by the teams and they didn’t stop until reaching the 30-goal margin with each Italian field-player scoring at least one.
GRE – ESP
The Greeks clinched the top spot in their group by scoring a comfortable win over Spain – and this also secured them a place in the semifinal and a sure berth for the Olympic qualification tournament. Spain, playing without their best center-forward, Garcia, fought hard but could do only one miracle when they equalised despite trailing 0-3 after eight minutes. But the second wave of the Greek attacks did the damage, the world champions took a 7-4 lead early in the fourth period and sailed away with the victory.
