USA claims 9th World League

USA have won another World League crown after topping Australia 8-7 in the 2015 final in Shanghai, China on Sunday. The win marked the 9th for Team USA and 2nd straight. The course of the game was striking, though. In large part, if not all, USA's dominance in the opening period and 6-2 lead proved decisive as Australia hit back in the second period and fought hard to equalise. The American women however held on at the critical moments to secure a narrow 8-7 victory and clinch another World League title to their team resume. Courtney Mathewson and Kaleigh Gilchrist scored two goals each to lead USA in the win.

The bronze medal was secured by the Netherlands, their best World League result so far, as they defeated hosts China 10-5 on Sunday. Russia finished in 5th place thanks to a 16-8 win over Canada while Italy avoided a last-place classification by rolling past Brazil from the second period onwards for the 11-2 final score.

Australia, USA in World League final

Considered the best two teams in the world but confirmed again. In a re-match of the interncontinental qualification tournament final, back in May won by USA after a penalty shoot-out 10-12, this year's grand World League final also features powerhouses USA and Australia. Both overcame their opponents in the semifinals on Saturday in Shanghai as Team USA once again defeated the Netherlands, this time with a 5-8 score, while the Aussie Stingers held off hosts China 3-5. Bronwen Knox led the Australian attack with 2 goals. Kami Craig, Makenzie Fischer and Ashley Grossman each scored two for USA in their win over the Dutch side. In other results Russia and Canada will play for 5th place following wins in the crossover matches on Saturday. Russia edged Italy on penalties after a 9-9 score at the end of regulation and winning the shoot-out series 2-4. Canada overcame Brazil 8-6.

Netherlands, China join group winners in semifinals

Both teams who finished second in the group stage of the World League Super Final in Shanghai were knocked out of medal contention on crossover day as respective 3rd seeds Netherlands and China joined favourites USA and Australia in the semifinals after close wins. The Dutch side held on in the fourth quarter to beat Italy 7-8, fueled by three goals from lefty Vivian Sevenich who played in the Italian league last season, while China in Friday's final match in front of their home crowd topped Canada 6-5 to now meet Australia in the semifinal. The Aussie Stingers were not to be surprised by Brazil who lost 17-8. Leading scorers for Australia in the win were Ashleigh Southern, Bronwen Knox and Glencora McGhie who scored 3 each. Defending champions USA also lived up to the expectations by beating Russia 6-17. They will now meet the Netherlands in the semifinals on Saturday. The sides already met during the prelims with USA finishing on top 3-8. In the other semifinal Australia meets hosts China, a match-up also already played during the group stage with Australia as victors 10-5.

Australia wins battle for top spot group A

Thanks to a converted penalty shot by lefty Isobel Bishop with just a minute remaining Australia defeated Italt 8-7 in a tight battle for first place in group A of the women's World League Super Final preliminary phase Thursday. The Aussie Stingers, missing centre-back Hannah Buckling, sidelined with a broken finger, saw captain Bronwen Knox fouling out before three quarters were played still managed to hold on for the important win. Youngster Bronte Halligan earned a penalty with just 64 seconds on the clock followed by the game winner from Bishop. Australia now meets Brazil in the crossover round Friday for a spot in the semifinals. Italy, with Arianna Garibotti as top scorer with 3 goals in Thursday's match-up, take on the Netherlands in the opening match on Friday. The Dutch could not cause an upset against USA who controlled their match-up throughout and triumphed 3-8 to win group B. In other results, Canada benefited by claiming 2nd place in group B as they defeated Brazil 11-8 on Thursday. In the final match in Shanghai, hosts China made the home crowd cheer by holding off Russia 9-7. Canada now meets home team China for a top 4 berth while Russia has the daunting task of facing group winners and defending champions USA in the crossovers Friday.

Italy holds off Russia - Super Final day 2

It was a high-scoring game but Italy held on to beat Russia on day 2 of the women's World League Super Final 14-12 despite remaining scoreless in the final quarter where the Russian women looked for a comeback. Four goals in three quarters for Teresa Frassinetti looked to boost the Italians to a clear victory as they took control in the third period gaining a 14-9 advantage. But Russia came back in the final session where they scored three unanswered goals but could not overcome the deficit as the 2012 European champions held on to win 14-12, their second in group A. And together with Australia who topped China 10-5 in a solid performance for their second straight victory to set up a big meeting with the Italian team on Thursday for the top spot in the group. Meanwhile in group B defending champions USA marched on, this time beating arch rivals Canada 9-3 in convincing fashion to lead the group after two of the three group stage rounds. Netherlands took second place by beating Brazil 13-5. Captain Yasemin Smit led the way on offence scoring three goals for the Dutch who trailed 1-2 at quarter-time but took over from there and never looked back.

Canada edges Netherlands on penalties in Super Final opener

The women's World League Super Final got underway in Shanghai, China on Tuesday with a thriller straight away. Despite an early 3-0 advantage the Netherlands saw Canada crawling back to tie their event-opening match-up 9-9 at the end of regulation following a close back-and-forth second half. In the shootout both teams scored their first series of penalty shot attempts before Dutch national team member Dagmar Genee missed her attempt in the sudden-death phase while Canada converted on the other end to win 15-14. Defending champions USA rolled past Brazil in their opener 16-3 including two scoreless quarters for the Brazilian side with Makenzie Fischer as top scorer for the winners netting 3 shots, followed by a good result for Australia who held off Russia 8-4. A match-up that also included a two-quarter scoreless haul for the losing squad. Nicola Zagame led the winners in attack scoring 3 goals. Finally Italy concluded day 1 of action by beating hosts China 11-6 behind three goals each from Tania di Mario and Arianna Garibotti.

Defending champs favourites once again

The women's World League Super Final kicks off on Tuesday in Shanghai, China with defending champions United States in the role of favourites once again. The reigning Olympic champions restored order in last year's edition of the Super Final after China blocked a possible 5th straight World League in 2013 by winning the Super Final that year in Beijing. The following edition however USA once again cruised to victory beating 2012 European champions Italy in the final while Australia took the bronze medal.

For the upcoming 2015 edition, already the 5th consecutive Super Final hosted in China, Team USA is considered favourite to add another World League trophy to its impressive cabinet. The Adam Krikorian coached side last week in Kunshan won the 7-nation friendly tournament cup beating the Netherlands in the final 18-9 after the Dutch were defeated 10-3 in the group stage by the Americans, although most coaches were rotating their squad throughout that preperational tournament. Head coach of the main rivals Australia, Gred McFadden labelled the US team as favourite in the Australia Water Polo preview of the event. The rivalry between the Aussie Stingers and the USA has endured over time and has been especially strong over the past twelve months, with the two teams meeting in the gold medal final of two of the past three major FINA tournaments, Australia only managing to come out ahead on one of those occasions.

USA and Australia headline the respective groups in which the opponents from Italy, Russia and the Netherlands can be considered outsiders with the possibility of advancing deep into the tournament as all teams will reach the knockout stage. Here both group winners will face the other group's 4th ranked sides while crossing matches will see the 2nd and other group's 3rd ranked teams face off against each other and vice versa.
