Primorje takes hold of group A after solid win over Pro Recco

|Saturday 15 March 2014, 16:55|Tim Hartog

http://www.waterpoloworld.com/News/tabid/169/ArticleId/6503/news.aspx

Barceloneta was one of the winners of day 7 in the Champions League prelims after holding on to beat Jug in Dubrovnik 8-9. Although gaining a big two-goal lead in the fourth quarter seemed to be decisive a tense final minute in Dubrovnik followed as Jug got the ball for a final attempt in the dying seconds following youngster Ante Viskovic' consolation goal to reduce the gap to just one: 8-9. But two attempts from the final extra man possession were saved by excelling goalie Daniel Lopez as the Final Six hosts held on for the big away to, perhaps temporarily, join Primorje to lead group A. In group B Partizan, exactly 50 years after the club won the inaugural Champions Cup in Zagreb, posted a critical but solid 14-7 win over Galatasaray taking one step ahead towards Final Six qualification. The home side took the initiative after a 2-2 draw at quarter time and was not be endangered in the remainder, led by the powerful duo of Dusan Mandic and Milos Cuk who scored three goals apiece. Still dominating the group is Radnicki though who added another expected win to their unbeaten record beating last ranked Oradea 6-16 in Romania. The one-sided affair saw the Serbian visitors taking a quick 2-6 lead to never look back. Radnicki was already sure of Final Six qualification but looks well underway to the semi-finals group winner.

Eger’s Champions League curse continues while Olympiacos retains hope on a miracleAfter the new targets set by the club management of ZF-Eger there is more pressure than ever around the Champions League encounters. However, since the 6-11 home defeat against Primorje a month ago, new coach Norbert Dabrowski appeared to have everyone on the same page again.
Impressive victories over YBL (24-5), Kaposvár (21-4) and Honvéd (8-5) helped Eger take back the number 1 spot in the competition and morale is high.

However, Dabrowski received some bad news after the Honvéd game on Tuesday. World champion Miklós Gór-Nagy appeared to have suffered a muscle tear in his right shoulder. The head coach said that they are waiting for the MRI results to conclude the severity of the injury but that Gór-Nagy will most likely be out for 2 to 3 weeks.
Gór-Nagy himself replied that he did not notice the injury during or after the match.

“I did not feel it during the match although I remember when it happened and I could still continue and finish the game. Afterwards I did not notice it yet either but the following day (Wednesday) I felt the injury and visited our team physician. Together we concluded the muscle was torn. It appears I need to take 2 to 3 weeks rest and need to watch the shoulder movement.” – Miklós Gór-Nagy (source vlv.hu)Dabrowski decided not to replace Gór-Nagy in the squad for the Champions League confrontation and travelled to the capital of Greece with a selection of 13 players.

“It will be different a match than earlier this year in Eger. It will be very tough but if we want to reach our targets, we need to perform and get a good result. We want to win every game, competition and Champions League.
We have analyzed the style of play of Olympiakos and are prepared.” – Norbert Dabrowski (source egrivizilabda.hu)

Olympiacos tried to continue their momentum on the European stage after the glorious victory over Barceloneta on the previous round. Although the rest of the Champions League campaign for Eger is a formality, Olympiacos still have a mathematical chance to qualify for the Final Six in Barcelona later this year. The team from Piraeus will need a miracle for this to become reality though.
The good form in the competition for Eger seems to completely disappear as soon as the Champions League appears. Inaccurate passing and confusion in the visitor’s defence gave Angelos Vlachopoulos all the room he needed to shine. Twice from a man-up situation and once on a counter attack, after intercepting an Eger pass, he hit 3 times in quick succession. Eger looked to be disorientated by the early setback and struggled to find their rhythm.

Meanwhile Olympiakos continued to exploit the gaps in the Eger defense and hit another 2 before Gábor Kovács could score the 2nd goal for the Hungarian champions. Experienced Greek international Evangelos Delakas made it 7 ahead of half-time and Eger had to urgently turn the tide to avoid another European humiliation.
Unfortunately for the Eger fans Olympiacos did not plan on allowing their opponent to come back into the game.
Both Vlachopoulos and Fountoulis went on increasing their game total and took Olympiacos into the double figures.
Bálint Lőrincz was the only Eger player to offer something in return ahead of the fourth period.
Leading 10-3 the Greek powerhouse knew the victory would not be endangered anymore and lowered the pace.
Even then Eger could not come out on top. More goals of Fountoulis and Vlachopulos and 1 hit from Christodoulos Kolomvos made it 13 for Olympiacos. Zsolt Varga and Bence Bátori scored for Eger in the final period to complete a disappointing total of 5.

Despite the dominating displays from Eger in the recent rounds of the domestic competition, the curse on the European league is still not lifted. The reason why leaves the Eger fans guessing and appears to be something to analyze for psychologist.
The victory keeps the dream for Olympiacos alive to still make it into the top 3 of group A.

Pivotal day 7 in Champions League

|Friday 14 March 2014, 07:40|Tim Hartog
http://www.waterpoloworld.com/News/tabid/169/ArticleId/6495/news.aspx

With plenty to play for but nothing to be decided the importance of day 7 in the preliminary phase of the Champions League is mostly described. But with multiple mouthwatering clashes at hand there will be not shortage of action as the teams gear up for the final and decisive race for Final Six qualification. Saturday also marks a special day as exactly 50 years ago the first, then Champions Cup, was concluded with Partizan Belgrade as winners in Zagreb and Dynamo
Moscow finishing runners-up. Half a century later the Serbian side is set to play Turkish champions Galatasaray at home in the Banjica pool in critical match-up to keep sight of the Final Six tournament. After falling to Spandau Berlin on day 6 the battle for the third and final spot in group B all of a sudden is back in full swing. And with Galatasaray four points behind on the Serbs an upset win in Belgrade could even get them back into the picture.

But there's plenty more to be seen around Europe. Especially the group A schedule produces several sensational encounters in a tight situation with now four teams fighting over three, or rather two spots. Final Six hosts Barceloneta, currently ranked joint second along with Pro Recco and Jug is already sure of participating in their own tournament which leaves just two spots up for grabs in group A. In the current standings that would mean Jug Dubrovnik, despite having collected the same number of points as fellow contenders Pro Recco and Barceloneta, miss out on the final tournament. Still three important days are to be played but the close situation in the high-level group A is worth mentioning at this stage. So for virtually all teams there's still plenty to play for as the prelims are well past the halfway mark.

Jug will be the first in action as they host Barceloneta. The Veselin Duho coached side could earn three big points in the battle in group A and on top of that, get some revenge for the 9-8 loss they sufferend in Spain on day 4. It was one of the then considered surprising results although at this point no one is surprised by Barceloneta's Champions League form anymore. Last year's bronze medal winning side however is coming off another close call falling to Olympiacos 10-11 at home two weeks ago. In between coach Chus Martin and his men dominated the Spanish cup final four en route to a second consecutive national cup trophy to gain even more confidence in order to bounce back from the loss to the Greek side.

Jug, here veteren centre back Andro Buslje who was absent, were held to a little surprising 10-10 draw with Mladost in the Adriatic league last week. Can they respond with a valuable win in the Champions League on Saturday?

That Greek squad will welcome Hungarian champions ZF-Eger to their pool on Saturday. It marks the match-up between the group's fifth and sixth seed teams. For Eger it the first meeting with Olympiacos was the only game they went on to win up until now in this group stage. The so far dissapoint run in the Champions League however has not too much affected the performance in the domestic league where Eger restored the lead by beating Honvéd 5-8 with solid play last Tuesday. Under new head coach and former assistant Norbert Dabrowski the team will be looking to finish off this Champions League campaign as well as possible and can consider the match-up with Olympiacos as one of the better chances of adding a second win to their record with away games at Barceloneta and Pro Recco in the remainder to follow.

But the biggest game of day 7 is a second re-match of the 2012 Euro League final. And this year again a potential final as well. Two favorites for the win meeting again after Primorje confirmed their title-favorite status on day 4 by beating Pro Recco 6-8 in Italy; a huge win. Mainly in terms of confidence because although Primorje currently leads group A the advantage over the fellow contenders is 'just' three points. However the task for Pro Recco is daunting as they will be looking to beat the Croatian side by more than 2 goals in order to get the advantage if both sides are to finish with equal points after 10 rounds of play. Primorje, still dominating the Adriatic league as reigning champions, got a big blow recently when it became public that Sandro Sukno will be out for at least the next three months because of pfeiffer's disease but have the ability and roster to compensate for that loss. They will be needing it on Saturday when the Italian champions will be the opponent. The Pino Porzio coached side got a huge lift by beating fellow contender Jug 12-10 on day 5 and are confident to get a good result in the northern Croatian city.

Meanwhile in group B a rather different situation is to be seen. With the exciting battle for third place to be heaten up the first two teams are virtually sure of playing in Barcelona late May. In fact, Serbian powerhouse Radnicki is the first side sure of Final Six qualification and the only squad still unbeaten at this point. The game will mark the first under the guidance of new head coach Uros Stevanovic who took over after Dejan Jovovic was fired two weeks ago. Although Oradea proves to be a tough team to beat, especially at home led by Serbian national team goalkeeper Gojko Pijetlovic, Radnicki comes in for no less than a victory, their possible impressive 7th in a row.

Pictured: Radnicki's goalie Zdravko Radic, centre forward Boris Zlokovic (left) and veteran centre back Damir Buric are hoping to improve on the 8-6 win over Oradea at home in Saturday's return match-up.

.

Second seed Brescia will host German runners-up Spandau who brought back tension in the group by beating Partizan 10-9 thanks to a Marko Cuk winning goal in the dying seconds on day 5 at home. The German record champion will face the top teams in the next two matches but on days 9 and 10 will be looking to add another two wins to their record in order make a final stretch for the third spot and Final Six qualification out of group B. Spandau did well against Brescia at home leading 6-3 at half time before a superior second half got the Italians a 10-12 victory. However things could turn out different on Saturday. The favorite home side, backed by their enthousiastic fans, proves to be among Europe's best sides at home and can be considered clear favorites for Saturday's match-up.
