Cancun (MEX), March 1, 2014 – FINA
The FINA World Water Polo Conference gathered experts from the oldest Olympic team sport in Cancun (MEX) on February 27-28, 2014 to discuss and exchange ideas on the future evolution of water polo, and the improvement of its place and importance on the sport international market.
Including panels with representatives from other professional leagues and newly popular team sports, sponsors, media/TV, players and leaders of water polo, this two-day initiative reaffirmed the need for a more understandable sport, capable to attract new fans on a global scale.
“Our main goal is to modernise our product - water polo - within the new developments on the sports industry. FINA is at the top of International Federations concerning the rate of innovation of our disciplines. Therefore, we must not be afraid to move forward”, considered Cornel Marculescu at the conclusion of the Conference.
Taking example on highly successful leagues (NBA, NFL, or NHL), the water polo family was briefed about the secrets behind the high-level exposure of these sports on TV, social media, and their importance on a world level but also next to the respective local communities.
“Combined with the exchange of ideas and the innovative concepts that we have heard about, I know that together we can make our sport even more popular and more recognised internationally”, declared the FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione in the closing speech.
Throughout the Conference, one main message emerged to the delegates present in Mexico: to target high, water polo should be much more than a game; it should represent a unique experience for fans, and create a memorable opportunity to attract new spectators and supporters. Many ideas were presented on this matter, but one conclusion was evident: fans’ satisfaction is the number one priority.
Promotion, entertainment, global show, heroes, social media, drama and emotion were some of the key concepts that were retained.
“The rules of the game are perhaps the easiest part of the equation. We have to create synergies at all levels. We have a great game, with fantastic players, so let’s think high and don’t be afraid of the change”, appealed FINA’s Executive Director Cornel Marculescu to the delegates present in Cancun.

R 17 - FINA World Water Polo Conference: sharing
experiences, getting inspired, shaping the future
Cancun (MEX), February 25, 2014 – Lecturers and delegates are arriving in Cancun to participate in the FINA World Water Polo Conference, taking place on February 27-28, 2014 in the Mexican beach resort. During two days, and under the motto “Sharing the Magic of Team Sports”, this Conference will be the opportunity to exchange experiences, to get new inspiration and to shape the future of this spectacular discipline.
The presence of many lecturers from outside the FINA world represents a major step forward in providing delegates from the FINA National Member Federations with motivational insights of what is done with leagues and new sports that are worldwide recognised as cases of success. Leagues such as NFL (American Football), NBA (Basketball), NHL (Ice Hockey) and ICC (Cricket) will have their representatives in Cancun, while newly popular sports, such as Rugby 7, BMX (Bicycle Motocross) and Beach Volleyball will also unveil their winning strategies.
From the water polo world, former players and well known leaders in the discipline will provide an essential input on how the oldest Olympic team sport has successfully developed and what are the challenges for this game in the sport international arena. Legendary US player Brenda Villa, or iconic coaches such as Alessandro Campagna (ITA) and Denes Kemeny (HUN) will be in Mexico to deliver their vision of Water Polo.
The two-day Conference Programme will be completed by the participation of media and sponsor representatives, the privileged partners in the promotion of Water Polo in the five continents.
Underlining the importance of this initiative, the FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione said: "FINA is necessarily attentive to the constant evolution in the sport market. In this changing world, many new trends and developments have been made in all areas: the Sport has changed into a business arena made of great Stars and memorable performances, the ways to transmit it have also evolved, and the audiences that follow our best athletes are also not comparable to what existed some decades ago."
Dr. Maglione naturally looks forward to organising this event for the benefit of the Sport:

"The FINA World Water Polo Conference is the latest step in giving this Sport the place it deserves among the top team games in the world. Pioneer at Olympic level, being on the Games’ programme since 1900, it is also a pillar of Aquatics and is practiced in the five continents. This rendezvous in Cancun is primarily a forum of interaction and exchange of ideas and experiences, constituting a very healthy exercise that will certainly allow us to move forward in the right direction."
