FOTO Jug - Olympiakos 11:9!

Giorgetti winner helps Pro Recco surviving Eger

Jug and Spandau started their respective Champions League quests for the Final Six qualification with winning on day 1 of the preliminary phase. Jug held off Greek champion Olympiakos at home in Dubrovnik 11-9, with Miho Boskovic and Nikola Janovic leading the way scoring three each, while Spandau comfortably led throughout their match-up with Oradea as they went on to win 8-6.

The top match-up in Eger saw Pro Recco surviving a sloppy start in which a thunderous start by Eger (3-0) forced Aleksandar Ivovic to come to the rescue powering home two distance shots to get Recco back in the game. What followed after a 0-3 second quarter performance by Recco for the 4-5 half time score was a close game that exploded in the final quarter. Zsolt Varga shot his team up ahead two times (6-5, 7-6) but Mladan Janovic and again Ivovic responded for the visitors. The exclamation point was served by Alex Giorgetti, although it looked to be early for the game winner with 2.58 remaining. A well played man-up was finished with the Italian with Hungarian roots who finished from the far post off a nice feed from Norbert Madaras as Recco went up ahead 7-8. Eger then drew no less than three extra man situations but could not convert on either one of them. The final possession, off a time-out with just 20 seconds remaining saw Bence Batori firing two shots from the left wing, both saved by Recco goalie Stefano Tempesti as the 2012 winning team walked away with the close victory.

Final Six host Barceloneta kicked off with a big win over visiting favorite Primorje 8-7 thanks to a winning goal by left-hander Gonzalo Echenique, his third of the game for top scoring honours as well. Daniel Varga produced the same offensive night for Primorje. In Istanbul, Turkey home side Galatasaray could not upset Radnicki who won 7-11. Boris Zlokovic and Filip Filipovic once again led the way scoring three goals each. Radnicki used its varied and balanced offence to edge its Turkish opponent after a balanced opening quarter (4-4). The final game of day 1 of the prelims finished in Brescia, Italy where home side goalkeeper Marco del Lungo emerged as game winner for Brescia performing numerous saves for his team to turn around a quick 1-3 deficit in the opening quarter into a clear 11-6 win. In the second term Brescia turned up its defence and held Partizan to shooting from outside. After Del Lungo caught fire there was not much to get for Partizan who struggled to get the ball inside or drawing exclusions and scored just three goals in the final three quarters. On the other end the usual offensive performance by Valerio Rizzo and the strong debuting left-hander Ugo Crousillat did even more damage.

Xavi Garcia: "Dani Pinedo lo ha parado todo" (RFEN)

Xavi Garcia:

Champions: Trabajada victoria del At—Barceloneta (RFEN)

Champions: Trabajada victoria del At—Barceloneta

Echenique y López-Pinedo obran el milagro

(Mundo Deportivo)

Si hubiesen elegido Génova no habría dicho nada.

The final phase before the elite six teams of Europe will play for the trophy in Barcelona, Spain will get underway on Wednesday with the first of ten rounds of Champions League preliminary action. Nice games can be seen on six different location throughout Europe. In group A, the so called 'group of death' with just two spots for the Final Six available due to hosts Barceloneta already being sure
of qualification Croatian champion Jug will start things off by hosting Greek powerhouse and national champion Olympiakos; both sides enjoyed the receival of a wild card earlier this season. In Eger, Hungary the home side will take on 2012 winner Pro Recco who survived late-game heroics by outgoing champion Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade over a week ago to qualify for the preliminary round after a penalty shoot-out. Being one of the, if not the, best side coming out of the qualification phase it will be interesting to see what the Ricardo Tempestini coached side will be able to achieve in this tough group A. Finally Spanish star in Croatia Xavi Garcia will meet plenty of former (and current national) teammates as Primorje travels to Barcelona to take on Spanish national champion Barceloneta.
Meanwhile in group B German runner-up Spandau, receiving a wild card as well, host Romanian champion CSM Oradea who surprised many by crawling to a tough qualification series to finally edge Sintez Kazan in the third round and were rewarded with ten more games on the highest club stage in Europe. This matchup looks to be an interesting one for either sides conserding the group in which last year's Euro Cup winning side Radnicki and Italian runner-up Brescia could be considered the favorite two. In contention for a possible third place or upset gaining points in the first match could be vital. For Brescia action will start with an interesting game facing Partizan. Serbian coach Vladimir Vujasinovic on Monday told the media the results of his young team in Europe are not the top priority, instead the development of his team in Europe's major competition is more important, but top players Dusan Mandic and Milos Cuk openly expressed their desire to return home with a good result on Wednesday. Things will not be easy for Brescia, current leaders of the Italian league and considerably stronger this season with the adding of multiple offensive threats like Guillermo Molina, Valerio Rizzo and French captain Michael Bodegas, and look to even increase their depth compared to the domestic league roster as they can count on the services of left-handed Montenegrin national team player Ugo Crousillat who joins the team for the European matches. The third and final game for round 1 will be played in Istanbul, Turkey where national champion Galatasaray will host Radnicki, the sight of a meeting between countrymen Slobodan Nikic, Mihajlo Korolija, Srdjan Aksentijevic (Serbia), Vjekoslav Paskovic and newly acquired goalkeeper Milos Scepanovic (Montenegro) all playing for the home side, with national or former club teammates like Filip Filipovic, veteran Aleksandar Ciric (Serbia), centre forward Boris Zlokovic and goalie Zdravko Radic (Montenegro). The visitors went through the qualification phase in convincing fashion and even are notable favorites to make it all the way to the Final Six but know the haviest task so far will await them in this group stage.

Champions League changes coming through

http://www.waterpoloworld.com/| Tuesday 19 November 2013, 08:22 | Tim Hartog
On the eve of the preliminary phase of the newly set up Champions League organizer LEN hopes to show the first signs of changes as presented last year during the Final Four tournament in Belgrade, Serbia and implemented quickly afterwards. Big efforts behind the scenes now look to become more visible as this year's new competition progresses towards the highlight of the Final Six in Barcelona, Spain (29-31 May, 2014). Waterpoloworld returned to LEN Sports Manager Marco Birri to discuss the current state of the new competition format and clarify all questions that raised changing a system so close to a new season. And Birri responds: ''This is a long-term project that has already delivered achievements.''

No one discussed that the state of water polo's major European club competition wasn't very bright last year. By then organizer LEN was already finalizing a new format, eventually presented to teams and federations in Belgrade, Serbia on the occasion of a memorable Final Four tournament. Busy times for Birri and his team ahead of a new season that, despite still the whole summer to work, was so relatively close considering the amount of changes that were about to be made. But after the usual ups and downs now the three-round qualification phase is concluded and the final 12 teams will kick things off on Wednesday with the first of ten games in the preliminary phase. But what is behind all this and more importantly, why were specific measures taken by LEN?

Marco Birri explains:
''In all honesty this format is very much inspired by the currently adopted format of the basketball Euroleague. It's based on a long-term marketing strategy that will allow us to present a clear product and making guarantees. In addition we've had and have the opinion that more clubs should be involved and therefore try to incorporate that feature into the system as well. Those are the two major points. Because behind all successful sports competitions there's a solid and long-term marketing strategy from which the clubs, organisations and all others involved can benefit.''

What does that mean?
''In order to increase the area in which Champions League water polo is being involved in, we have to get more teams from more countries in to participate (for starters). That's not only something that could be done by an extension of Final Four to Final Six but as well through the qualification phase that we now have. A current number of 8 nations are now in the last step before the final tournament but that could be 10 nations in the 12 teams that are in the preliminary round in the near future. But that's supposed to be a result of the solid basis of format we have presented this season and therefore takes time. Obviously it's not something you will change in months or even a year. But I'm satisfied with the progress we've made from the organisational standpoint of view.''

TV rights
''But perhaps the biggest issue always was TV rights and the selling of it. There's a major change this year being the fact that we've allocated the international TV rights to EBU (European Broadcasting Union). It means that in case, for instance, the Serbian national TV wants to cover a game of either of the two Serbian teams (Partizan or Radnicki) playing outside of Serbia they can contact EBU whereas they previously had to deal with LEN. But there's more in this change. EBU is a well experienced partner in selling tv rights and offers way more, including packages of for instance multiple games or even short highlights. So those will now be available to buy (or actually download) as well. Meaning that if a country that is not even involved in the Champions League at this point is interested to broadcast any type of material they can easily get it with plenty of options to choose from. And that of course applies to the current involved countries as well. With that water polo will even come in multi-sports highlights packages as well. And that will obviously draw more attention, not only in the countries where water polo is televised regularly, but in a new potential area in Europe and even outside.''

So all preliminary round games are to be televised?
''Yes. Each team has a host broadcaster responsible for the production while having the domestic rights. It doesn't mean all games will be available live, that's up to the respective broadcasters, but they will be televised anyway. It’s part of the agreement we have with EBU that runs through 2016 but of course after this season will be evaluated to optimize.''

A new way of presenting?
''More or less, yes. The Champions League will be more identical, more as a brand. Hard work is being delivered to set up a new, own logo and new tv graphics which should create a more 'own' identity for the Champions League. It’s being approved and finally send around, I hope by Tuesday morning to the television stations to implement it on Wednesday and in some cases because of the short amount of time left, in round 2 of the preliminary phase games for sure. It will include a package of new designs that will be visible not only on the tv graphics but on the pool decks as well. Each field will have the logo appearing on a set part of the field and other promotional materials such as banners are already delivered as well. So the Champions League will be more visible as its own.''

Looking at the bigger picture now, how do you feel?
''
I'm convinced this way is the good one, especially for a solid future. I've seen that this new Champions League with a system that, in large part, will be known for the next three years in fact enables us to present a clear plan to potential sponsors and/or partners. And we've already had success with allocating the international tv rights and more. One of our partners Malmsten will provide all clubs in the preliminary round with the same field of play so we will create an identical visibility for viewers around Europe, just like another partner, Mikasa, will deliver all the game balls for that period of three years. We as LEN are making big efforts to upgrade the competition into a financially and sport-wise more interesting league. We've had three meetings with the clubs so far, of which the last one was with the remaining 12 clubs and their host broadcaster, right after the qualification phase all on cost of LEN. And those were interesting and good meetings I have to say. We feel that setting up a solid and long-term marketing plan is the basis of a big and on-going competition that will promote all clubs and the sport of water polo throughout Europe big time. And we are working just like that. We realise that there's always room for improvement and I'll be the first to acknowledge but regarding vision I believe that the path we've chosen will ultimately lead to the big competition this Champions League should be.''

Are there any changes to be expected next year?
''No. That's part of the plan and different from early years in which changes were applied too often. With the wild cards clubs and LEN signed a contract for 3 years that guarantees certain conditions from both sides. And with that a clear situation will appear that is interesting to work with for clubs, organisations, partners and sponsors.  Adjustments are always possible and you should always keep your eyes and ears open to optimize certain aspects but those will be minor.''
