Crvena Zvezda walks away with big win in tense showdown
Waterpoloworld.com | | | Wednesday 17 April 2013, 19:07 | | | Tim Hartog |
The game had everything a Final Four encounter could have. Tight defence, quality goals, tension, wild plays and a finals-like atmosphere in the pool in the the city of Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary caused by Crvena Zvezda's fanatic supporters and well-countered by the home side supporters when Szeged scored. The spectators saw the visitors from Belgrade, Serbia walking away with a big 5-7 win in the tense showdown that included a wild fourth quarter in which Szeged scored through a nice Bela Török goal off a man-up possession but could not convert on three other occasions with a player advantage and although the home side tried hard in the final phase, Crvena Zvezda held on and returned home with a two-goal advantage going into the return match at home on May 1st. It was Boris Vapenski, the lefthander who showed to have the hot hand when it counted the most, who delivered the dagger. After a wild play Szeged veteran center Tamas Molnar was excluded and saw the opponent executing a nice man-up that ended in the hands of Vapenski who blast one in the far corner, out of reach for all defenders and the excelling Szeged-goalie Laszlo Baksa with just 1.52 remaining. Szeged then missed a bit of luck in the final phase that saw Joseph Kayes fumbling a ball in front of the goal on an extra man possession for the home side after which the Serbs played out the clock and celebrated a big win.
A dominating performance got reigning Spanish champions Barceloneta a big step towards the Champions League Final Four in Belgrade, Serbia (May 31 - June 1). The first of two quarter-finals matchups with Greek powerhouse Vouliagmeni was won 3-8 in Greece on Wednesday. The win gives the Spaniards a huge advantage with a home game left, scheduled to be played in two weeks time. Vouliagmeni was dominated on offensive and managed to score just thrice in the whole match including remaining scorelees in the second quarter.
Jug made a strong call for an expected Final Fourt berth in Istanbul, Turkey as they defeated home team Galatasaray 5-12 in the opening of two quarter-finals meetings. After a slow start the reigning Croatian champions dominated the remainer of the game walking away to a seven-goal advantage, fueled by another strong performance from their young goalie Marko Bijac. The win gets the title favorites in comfortable position for the return matchup on May 1st in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Miho Boskovic netted three goals for the visitors and saw four teammates scoring twice. Slobodan Nikic and Vjekoslav Paskovic carried the load for the Turkish squad netting two each.
Final Four hosts Partizan followed the example as they started off the two-game series with Russian giant Spartak Volgograd victorious 11-6. Right from the beginning the home team took control and looked confident going up 5-2 at half-time. A strong third quarter finish, which included three straight goals proved decisive as the Serbs made a big move towards participation in the conclusion of the league in their own Banjica outdoor pool on May 31st and June 1st.

Matchup in Hungary highlights Champions League quarters

The prestigious Champions League Final Four tournament is coming closer and closer. With just two games left in the quarter-finals, the European powerhouses are set to show their true faces, forced by fierce opponents. On Wednesday the quarter-finals will start with an absolute top match-up in the city of Hódmezővásárhely as the Hungarian league regular season winning 'home' side Szeged takes on Serbian title contender Crvena Zvezda. Both teams had impressive goings in the Champions League so far and were clearly considered Final Four contenders at the start and during this season. The top matchup in south-east Hungary highlights four big games in the quarters.
In Greece reigning national champs Vouliagmeni and Barceloneta square off. Two preliminary round group winners who are expected to be close. The visitors from Spain, already sure of the top spot going into the playoffs in the domestic league, rested their big players last weekend at home all in preparation for Wednesday's encounter. Although the Spaniards recorded more dominating results, especially in the previous round, they will be up for a tough battle in the beautiful swimming pool of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club.

Elsewhere in Belgrade, Serbia the anticipated hosts of this year's Final Four tournament will face Russian reigning champions and cup holders Spartak Volgograd. The Russians secured a spot in the quarters after a nice performance in the round of last sixteen second leg 2 at home against Greek competitor Olympiakos Piraeus. After having lost the first meeting 9-8 in Greece Spartak Volgograd stepped up at home winning 13-10. 2011 Euroleague winners Partizan meanwhile used a convincing 9-5 win in leg 1 versus Brescia to allow the Italians to come close but not far enough as a 6-7 loss in Italy saw the Serbs advancing to the final eight.

The conclusion of the first meeting in the Champions League quarter-finals will take place in Istanbul, Turkey as Galatasaray takes on Jug Dubrovnik. And with the Croatian squad considered hot title favorites the home side, who has proven to be a solid and legitimate competitor in the group of European 'Elite', will be looking to do most of the possible damage at home. The Turkish reigning champs, led by Serbian center Slobodan Nikic, Montenegrin driver Vjekoslav Paskovic and Serbian shooter Srdjan Aksentijevic on offense while counting on the reliability of center-back and USA-international Jesse Smith in front of the own goal, has the daunting task of stopping one of the most successful offences in the league this season. Jug also was the team to cruise through the round of last sixteen as Dutch national champion Schuurman BZC was blown away twice (1-19 and 17-7). For Jug the Champions League title has become a priority more and more after falling twice to Primorje in title games this season. Both the Croatian cup and Adriatic league, last weekend, were lost to the arch rivals. The first big step in the journey to the first Champions League win since the '05-'06 season is getting a good result from Istanbul which proved difficult enough. Just group D winners Szeged managed to pull off a win in the Turkish metropolis.
Adriatic league top scorer Aleksandar Ivovic will be one of many threats for Galatasaray to deal with

20:30 Galatasaray vs Jug Dubrovnik
