Spanish champion Barceloneta confirmed their status as legitimate Champions League Final Four contenders on Saturday in the tournament's first playoff match. At home the Spaniards dominated Romanian champion CSM Oradea by recording a ten-goal victory in leg 1 of the two-game round of last sixteen match-up. A spot in the quarter-finals therewith is more or less preserved by the current Spanish league leaders. Felipe Perrone was the highest scorer on Saturday netting four goals while both captain David Martin and Felipe Perrone added three each. Crvena Zvezda delivered an impressive performance as well. In their anticipated match-up with Hungarian competitor ZF-Eger the Serbs opened up with recording a 13-6 victory at home to gain a huge, if not decisive, advantage towards the teams' second meeting in Hungary. Sava Randjelovic was the victorious side's top scorer netting three goals, assisted by Viktor Rasovic, Nikola Radjen and Dusko Pijetlovic who all scored two. Canada international Kevin Graham netted a pair for Eger.

Greek runners-up Olympiakos finished a tense battle with Russian powerhouse Spartak Volgograd in Greece winning 9-8. The slight one-goal lead could turn out important in leg 2 in Russia in two weeks as the teams' showed to be very well levelled. Ioannis Fountoulis was on target once again as he scored a triple for the winning home side and earned top scoring honours.Vouliagmeni made a big step towards the quarter-finals holding off French runners-up Marseille at home 16-12. The four-goal advantage doesn't mean the deal is done but the task for the French side will be daunting on March 20.The other French participant, reigning national champion Montpellier, delivered a striking performance in their home meeting with a red-hot Szeged side but couldn't held on for a possible upset. The troubled Hungarians needed a powerful fourth quarter performance to seal the deal after the teams were levelled 6-6 with eight minutes to go. Bela Török was the high scorer for Szeged netting four goals.Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray delivered a nice performance starting off at home against Russian competitor Sintez Kazan, who finished second in group C. The home side led 4-2 at half time and even extended that advantage to a comfortable 7-3 with eight minutes to go as they went on to beat Kazan 9-6. Serbian center Slobodan Nikic once again was the top scorer for Galatasaray scoring thrice while Montenegro international Vjekoslav Paskovic and Srdjan Aksentijevic netted a pair each. Marko Kuc scored three for the Russian side.

The Champions League tournament is all set for the first playoff matches after a ten-round preliminary phase was concluded a little over a week ago. Some interesting match-ups in the round of last sixteen came out of the draw which was held last Thursday as the teams will now have just two games and one opponent to overcome on their way to the quarter-finals (May 17 and April 1st). Leg 1 will be started in Barcelona where prelims group C winners and reigning Spanish champs Barceloneta host CSM Oradea, the tough Romanian national champion who finished fourth in group D. One of the most exciting battles will start in the Serbian capital of Belgrade as Crvena Zvezda faces current Hungarian number two ZF-Eger; a two-game series between pretty experienced sides that could go either way. Another well-levelled match-up features Olympiakos and Russian champs Spartak Volgograd, to be started in Piraeus, Greece on Saturday. The Greek home side finished third in group B while the visitors from Russia concluded a close final run as number two in group A, tied in points with Eger.

Meanwhile Hungarian leader Szeged is considered favorite in their meeting with Montpellier but starts the first of two games in France where the home team will try their best for a good result with the support of their fans. The same goes for group A winners Vouliagmeni as French runners-up Marseille travel to Greece for their first of two meetings and try to reduce the home court advantage by gaining a good result for the return ten days later. Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray hosts Sintez Kazan, the Russian side that delivered a nice performance in finishing second in group C while the now home team concluded the prelims as group D's number three. Again an example of a possible interesting battle. The last in the list of, at least on paper, well-balanced match-ups is to be played on Sunday, again in Belgrade. Reigning Serbian champs Partizan, coming off a big 10-8 win over arch rivals Crvena Zvezda in the Serbian league host AN Brescia, the dominant leader in the Italian league this season. The Italians look to continue their good form into the playoff stage of the Champions League after finishing strong in the prelims that brought them a third spot in a tight group C. Elsewhere, one of the title favorites, Jug Dubrovnik, will travel to The Netherlands to take on Schuurman BZC in the city of Nijverdal. With the same squad as the one that recorded a 5-4 win over rivals Primorje Rijeka in the Adriatic league last Sunday, the Croats look keen to do some damage in leg 1 already.Champions League 2012-2013
