 Hoy ha sido presentada en sociedad y al mismo tiempo bautizada en un acto que ha sido conducido por Gemma Mengual, que recientemente se ha incorporado al equipo de organización de Barcelona 2013. La comunidad de este deporte ha acogido muy bien a la simpática mascota, cuya piel es un mosaico de clara inspiración gaudiniana. Se llamará Xop.
Maite Fandos, presidenta del Comité Organizador de Barcelona 2013, ha sido la encargada de desvelar la identidad de la mascota, que ha sido elegida mediante un concurso público en el que han competido más de 200 diseñadores gráficos de todo el mundo. Fandos ha comentado la importancia de la mascota en los eventos deportivos y ha destacado la relación de Xop con la obra de Antoni Gaudí: “La mascota recuerda a Barcelona, a Catalunya y al Mediterráneo. Y recupera la tradición de Gaudí de una forma moderna. Va a ser un instrumento clave en la promoción del evento y especialmente en la promoción de cara los niños”.
El autor de Xop es Albert Mir, un joven artista menorquín residente en Barcelona que por primera vez intervenía en un concurso para diseñar la mascota de un evento deportivo. “Me presenté por casualidad –ha manifestado- y ha sido una gran sorpresa para mí llegar hasta aquí. Pensé en una gota de agua por ser el principal elemento de un acontecimiento acuático y en Gaudí como el mayor icono arquitectónico de Barcelona. La mascota tenía que contener elementos de la ciudad.”.
La presentación, que ha tenido lugar en la Sala Ciutat, donde hasta mañana día 23 se encuentran expuestos los diseños de mascotas que superaron la primera selección (un total de 140), ha contado asimismo con la presencia de Fernando Carpena, presidente del Comité Ejecutivo de Barcelona 2013, que el domingo fue reelegido presidente de la Real Federación Española de Natación para un nuevo mandato de cuatro años.
Los deportistas también han querido estar presentes en la ceremonia de presentación de Xop. Jennifer Pareja y Laura Ester han representado al waterpolo femenino, mientras que del equipo masculino han comparecido Marc Minguell y Dani López-Pinedo.
Las primeras apariciones de la mascota para ayudar en la promoción de Barcelona 2013 se producirán la semana próxima, con la gala de la Federació Catalana de Natación, cuyo presidente, Enric Bertrán, también ha asistido hoy a la presentación, y con la disputa en la piscina del CN Sant Andreu del mitin Ciutat de Barcelona.

The mascot has been introduced to society today and baptized in an act that has been presented by Gemma Mengual, who has just recently joined the Organizing Committee of Barcelona 2013. According to the comments after the presentation, the guests are very satisfied about the new mascot, which is called Xop.
Maite Fandos, president of the Barcelona 2013 Organising Committee, has revealed the identity of the mascot, which has been elected the winner among 200 proposals that were sent to the event organizers of Barcelona 2013 as part of an online public competition. Xop covered in multi-colored mosaic tiles inspired by Gaudi’s art.
Fandos has underlined the importance of the mascot in a sporting event and has explained that it was inspired by the art of Antoni Gaudi. “The mascot reminds us of Barcelona, Catalonia and the Mediterranean. It depicts the tradition of Gaudi in a modern style. It will be a key promotional tool of the event, especially for children.”
The designer of Xop is Albert Mir, a Spanish artist from Menorca that lives in Barcelona. For the first time in his career, Mir designed the mascot for a sporting event. “It was coincidence that I even participated in the public competition and now I am very surprised that I got this far. I thought of a drop of water as the main element of an aquatic event and got inspired by Barcelona’s greatest architect. The mascot had to feature elements of the city,” Mir has explained.
The presentation, which has been held at the Sala Ciutat in Barcelona (City Hall) as part of an interesting exhibition of the different designs that event organizers received as proposal for the mascot, has been attended by the Executive President of the Barcelona 2013 Organizing Committee, Fernando Carpena, who was re-elected as president of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation for another four year term on Sunday.
Some of Spain’s best swimmers did not want to miss out on the official presentation of Xop. Jennifer Pareja and Laura Ester have represented the women’s national water polo team while Marc Minguell and Dani López-Pinedo of the men’s squad have attended the act.
The first public appearance of Xop in order to promote Barcelona 2013 is planned for next week, when the mascot will visit the annual gala of the Catalan Swimming Federation, whose president, Enric Bertrán, has also attended today’s presentation. Xop’s first event at a swimming pool will be the Ciutat de Barcelona Meeting, to be held at club CN Sant Andreu.
