Serbia 2012 European champions
| | Sunday 29 January 2012, 16:42 | | | Tim Hartog | | | 2009 views |
Serbia is
the new European champion. The Serbs defeated Montenegro in a tense final 9-8 on
Sunday in front of a sell-out Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim statium. The
absence of the Montenegrin centre-forward Boris Zlokovic, due to a hand
injury, and a poor shooting day of top scorer Mladjan Janovic caused
difficulties for the 2008 European champions although they sticked with Serbia
until the very end of the match. With less than a minute to play, Serbian
centre-back Milan Aleksic got his third exclusion but after a Ranko Perovic
called time-out, his team was unable to convert the power play as Nikola Janovic
at the left 2-meter position was defended very well and could not fire the ball
he had received to score. The eventually prooved winning goal was made
beautifully by the Serbian captain Vanja Udovicic on a power play with just over
a minute to play. The 2012 title is the first for Serbia since their 2006
championship in Belgrade, Serbia.
After a nervous start and a very levelled game, Serbia seemed
to decided the match in their favour in the fourh quarter when they took an 7-5
and 8-6 lead but Partizan-player Aleksandar Radovic scored three consecutive
goals that got Montenegrin back in the game twice before Vanja Udovicic hit the
winner with 1.12 to play.
Mladjan Janovic was awarded Best Player of the Tournament just before the medal ceremony.

Hungary is the 2012 European championships bronze medal
winner. The reigning Olympic champions defeated Italy 12-9 in the bronze medal
match on Sunday in front of a 3.100 spectator sell-out Pieter van den Hoogenband
Swim stadium. After a nervous start and 4-5 halftime score, Italy opened up a
three-goal lead in the third quarter (8-5), before the Hungarians made a great
comeback in the fourth quarter on a 5-goal run ending with a exclusion without
substitution for a frustrated Pietro Figlioli who kicked centre-forward Adam
Steinmetz with fourty seconds left in the game. Gergely Kiss converted the
awarded penalty shot for a 9-12 final score.

The final: preview

After two weeks of top waterpolo, the big final of the
2012 European championships will be played on Sunday in a sold-out Pieter van
den Hoogenband Swim stadium in front of 3.100 spectators. Maybe not the
expected, but a not less exciting final as Serbia takes on Montenegro. A rematch
of the 2008 Europeans final in Malaga, Spain when Montenegro wrote a little
history defeating their former teammates 6-4. Looking at the results of the
tournament, Serbia can be considered favorites but both teams can't hide any
secrets from each other. Serbia gained a convincing 12-8 win over Italy in the
semi-final while Montenegro needed extra time for an absolute upset against hot
gold medal favorites Hungary. Veteran Predrag Jokic scored the winner with two
minutes to play in the second half of overtime. For Serbia, the red-hot shooting
Mladjan Janovic, who scored 20 goals already, will need extra attention from the
defence while the offensive qualities of mainly Serbian centre-forward Dusko
Pijetlovic, lefhander Filip Filipovic and leading Vanja Udovicic must be stopped
by the Montenegrin defence in order to reach a second ever big waterpolo title.
Serbia is looking for the first European championship since 2006 when Hungary
was defeated 9-8 in a thrilling final in Belgrade, Serbia. The game will start
at 15.30 local time while Italy and Hungary will battle each other for the
bronze medal from 13.30 local time already.
