Eger wins Hungarian cup on penalties in thriller
ZF-Eger have concluded the first half of the season with a major trophy. In a thrilling final at home on Sunday the national cup was claimed on penalties edging Szolnok 12-13. Szolnok's Marton Vamos missed the decisive last penalty of the series instantly ending the match as celebrations began on Eger side.
With the score tied at 8-8 at the end of regulation, a shootout was up next for the teams to end this final in thrilling fashion. Szolnok however had a difficult final period and twice had to respond to the home team, although playing in the blue caps, grabbing the lead. First Eger turned around a 6-5 deficit into a 6-7 advantage, thanks to consecutive goals by Milos Cuk and captain Peter Biros, before Stefan Mitrovic tied the game at 7-7. But several minutes later centre forward Krisztian Bedö was there to once more put Eger in the right position after scoring an action goal. It proved not enough, just yet, as following a late exclusion of Marton Szivos, Szolnok's Denes Varga took advantage of the man-up situation and scored the equaliser: 8-8. In the penalty series however the home fans could ultimately cheer as goalie Branislav Mitrovic became the hero of the day forcing Vamos to miss the series final attempt so that the cup win was there for Eger.
