Kazan, Kirishi, Mornar, Szeged onto Euro Cup quarters
It took them a narrow, hard-fought 11-10 win over fellow Split based, and home team, Jadran Split on Sunday morning but thanks to the victory Mornar won group B and secured themselves of a spot in the Euro Cup quarterfinals. The Croats, led by Antonio Buha who scored 4 goals, saw Szeged grabbing 2nd place as they defeated CC Napoli 18-12 on Sunday. Krisztian Manhercz continued his sensational scoring this time co-leading the team with 4 goals, along with Zsolt Varga. The game's top scorer however was Biagio Borrelli for Napoli who hit 5 times. Extra blow for the Italians was the left-shoulder injury for top shooter Darko Brguljan who had to leave early.Group A saw the elimination of Hungarians FTC in dramatic fashion. They needed a win against Kinef Kirishi on Sunday but were heldto a 8-8 draw which ment Kirishi joins fellow Russian squad Kazan as the teams to advance out of group A, played in Naples. Kazan held Acquachiara winless over the weekend by beating the hosts 8-12 on the final day. Now the teams will be paired with one of the losing sides of the Champions League 3rd qualification round to battle for a spot in the Euro Cup semifinals. The draw for the quarterfinal match-ups is expected next week.

Szeged gains key win, Acquachiara eliminated
By showcasing his offensive talent once more, he took Szeged by the hand leading them to a much needed win. Krisztian Manhercz exploded for 7 goals in the 9-14 win for Szeged over Jadran Split in the 2nd round of matches in round 2 of the Euro Cup. A key victory for Szeged which kept their hopes for quarterfinals qualification alive, after Mornar had defeated the Hungarians 12-11 on Friday. The Croats meanwhile were held to a 7-7 draw by CC Napoli so nothing is decided in group D after two rounds played leaving the Sunday morning match-ups as deciders.In group C the all-Russian battle between Kinef Kirishi and Sintez Kazan again led to no victor. But their 9-9 draw also leaves open the final matches on Sunday to determine the top 2 teams in this group as FTC eliminated hosts Acquachiara 7-6 in the following match on Saturday so that the last year's finalists are gone for the tournament in round 2 already before the weekend finishes.

Russian teams strike in Euro Cup round openers
The Russian teams enjoyed a successful start to the second round of the Euro Cup. In group C, in Naples on Friday, both got a win in the highly competitive group. Sintez Kazan struck first by beating previous round group A winner FTC 8-6. Lefthander Ivan Nagaev (pictured) led the Russian side by scoring 3 goals. Kinef Kirishi also got underway with a win as they defeated home team Acquachiara 8-10 in the Scadone pool in Naples on Friday. Kirill Nikolaenko and Daniil Merkulov topped the scorers list netting 3 each. Meanwhile in group D, in Split fellow based side Mornar topped Szeged 12-11 in a close contest. Acquachiara hosts strong round 2 group
Apart from the decider in the Champions League qualifiers, the Euro Cup tournament will determine its quarterfinalists with round 2 to be contested in Naples, Italy and Split, Croatia this weekend. Last year's finalist Acquachiara plays host to group C; a strong group that features round 1 group A winning side FTC and Sintez Kazan who tied Mornar as group winners in group B the previous round. Fellow Russian representative Sintez Kazan completes the group in Naples. Meanwhile in Split last year's semifinalist Mornar is close to home with fellow Split based side Jadran playing host with Hungarian favourites Szeged, who finished 2nd behind FTC in group A last round, and Italy's CC Napoli, 3rd in group B, as main contenders.
