3rd Round Champions League 2015-2016 (3-17/10/15)

Both Hungarian teams – Szolnok and OSC – demolished their respective opponents and qualified for the prelims, just as Rijeka (CRO) and Jadran (MNE), though the latter one had some scary moments in Brescia.

Interestingly, bigger excitements came where few had expected: in Brescia, where the Italians had a 5-0 rush in 3:55 minutes in the second half which put them 7-2 ahead against Jadran. The Montenegrins won by 8 a fortnight ago, so their aggregate lead melted to three goals. However, they bounced back in time, tightened their defence in the third, halting Brescia’s run and when it stood 8-6 early in the fourth, they could lay back a bit. The hosts struggled for quite long: netted five goals back in the second, then found the back of the net only once in the following 12:58 minutes. In the dying minutes the Italian’s scoring machine geared up again but it was too late to regain the chance to make a miracle – a four-goal win and the consolation of continuing the journey in the Euro Cup were Brescia’s reward.

Szolnok had the narrowest win in the first leg – now the Hungarian champions earned the largest one: they needed only two periods to down Marseille (FRA). The French scored the first goal from an extra after one minute – the next time they could score the landscape was different: the Hungarians were 11-1 up. The visitors had a 19:23 minute silence in front and though they could climb back a bit but Szolnok’s win was never in danger.

Hungary will have three teams in the prelims (Eger is already there as wild-card holder): OSC Budapest, winner of the away match as well, offered an outstanding level in defending, shutting out Oradea (ROU) for 18:40 minutes. The Romanians could get on the scoreboard early in the third, by then OSC was 4-0 up and never looked back. After 5-2 they netted five more goals, thus becoming part of the big show after more than 35 years.

Rijeka, runner-up in last May, had no scares in Hannover – despite taking part in a tough encounter (12 exclusions apiece), the Croats controlled the game for most of the time, which wasn’t surprising as they won the first leg by 13 goals. This time the Germans could keep up until the middle of the third, but after 4-5 four connecting Croatian hits for 4-9 settled the outcome.

Primorje, Szolnok reach Champions League prelims

The first pair of matches to determine the last Champions League preliminary phase participants featured no surprise. Favourites Primorje, last year's finalist, and Hungarian champion Szolnok followed up on leg 1 wins by also triumphing in the 2nd round on Saturday. Primorje visited Hannover and got away with a solid 6-10 victory. After a rare scoreless opening period the Croats took command in the third period and were not endangered. Nikola Dedovic led all scorers with 3. Szolnok defeated Marseille at home 13-16. The Hungarians returned from Marseille with just a narrow 7-6 victory from leg 1 but restored order at home on Saturday. In the first half the home side already grabbed a 8-1 lead and could roll on to the win after the main break. Zivko Gocic (pictured, Norbert Madaras, Daniel Varga, Gabor Kis and Stefan Mitrovic each scored 2 goals to lead Szolnok. The game's top scorer however was on the other side as Thibaud Simon hit thrice for Marseille, who will continue in the Euro Cup tournament quarterfinals.

The Champions League preliminary stage starts with the first of ten rounds on 28 October and will be concluded on 18 May, 2016. The Final Six, in Budapest, will be played from 2-4 June, 2016.

Hungarian squads look to secure prelims at home

With Primorje and Jadran having struck fiercly in leg 1 of the decisive third qualification round of the Champions League the attention in the return leg, to be played Saturday, shifts to the pair of Hungarian representatives who, despite winning two weeks ago, hold narrow margins ahead of their respective leg 2 games at home. OSC (pictured) got away with an important 7-9 win in Oradea but experienced a tough match-up against the Romanian champion. Szolnok got surprised in Marseille where the home team, ready to play, held the favourite Hungarians to scoring just once in the first half in a 6-7 loss. The French side however knows it is up for a daunting task playing the Hungarian champion, unbeaten this season in the domestic league after 4 rounds, in the Szolnok Water Polo Arena on Saturday. For German representative Waspo 98 Hannover, after their 19-6 loss to Primorje, and AN Brescia, who fell to Jadran 14-6, the 2nd legs match-ups at home mainly seem to be opportunities to cut the deficit in the final score over 2 legs rather than having an actual chance of making it to the preliminary phase.

Primorje Rijeka (CRO) and Jadran Herceg Novi (MNE) are already on board after routing their respective rivals in the first leg of the third round of the qualification. The Hungarians, Szolnok and OSC both earned valuable away-wins but the margins left some excitement for the return games.
Primorje, runner-up in last season, didn’t want to let its German opponents to see a glimpse of chance – and they executed their plans in a devastating way. Though Hannover had some promising results in the previous two rounds, this time the Rijeka players destroyed them in eight minutes. They led 7-1 after the first period and went 10-1 up by the middle of the second. It ended up in a bad rout: Rijeka thrashed its rival 19-6, deciding the duel already – and making the prelims for the third straight season.
Montenegro will also have a team in the prelims but they had to wait four years to return to the big stage. Jadran Herceg Novi had three hard fought wins in the second round (each by a single goal) and now faced whom seemed to be the toughest ones among the runners-up in the previous round. Brescia, however, couldn’t perform at the usual level – or one can note that the Italians were right to let their wild-card go to Recco and see instead if their newly-built team was capable of making progress. Well, this time Jadran handed them a heavy defeat (14-6), winning the second half 7-2 – and directing them toward the Euro Cup.
Hungarian champion Szolnok maintains to experience the exciting part of the qualification in the third round. In the previous two years a single goal decided the outcome of the respective duels, the first year they fell against Rijeka, last season they overcame OSC, after beating them by one goal away and holding a draw in the return match. Now they pulled off the one-goal win in Marseille again, in a thrilling encounter. The first half saw a lonely goal, scored by Szolnok (0-1), beside a missed French penalty. Goals arrived in the second half, the Hungarians were 4-6 up and netted a penalty but the goal was disallowed by the refs and Marseille climbed back at the end to reserve some chance for the second leg (6-7).
A capacity crowd in Oradea saw the Romanian champion battling hard with Hungary’s silver medallist OSC Budapest, but going down at the end by two goals. The decisive moments came after 4-4 with three connecting goals from the Magyars and Oradea couldn’t bounce back from there. At the end, OSC earned a really valuable win (7-9) and sitting in a comfortable position to reach the preliminaries.

Champions: Ganan Primorje, OSC, Szolnok y Jadran

Champions: Ganan Primorje, OSC, Szolnok y Jadran

Jadran strikes hard at home

The first leg of the decisive 3rd qualification round for the Champions League preliminary round produced some striking results. Szolnok had all trouble overcoming Marseille in France, just prevailing 6-7 with Marseille's Enzo Khasz' goal coming too late for the home side, while Jadran Herceg Novi struck greatly at home playing Brescia. Jadran quickly got ahead in the opening quarter and walked away in a superior second half to beat the Italians 14-6, in what will be a mountain to climb for Brescia at home in leg 2 to turn things around. OSC got away with a valuable win in Oradea where the home side proved to be tough as always but just fell short 7-9 and now face the daunting task of overcoming that 2-goal deficit in Hungary in leg 2. The one squad living up to the expectations was Primorje who rolled past Waspo 98 Hannover in Rijeka 19-6 and virtually look sure of making it back to the prelims.

The draw for the Qualification Round III has been made in the famous London Aquatic Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, upon the occasion of LEN’s official site-visit before the 2016 swimming Europeans. Two group-winners, based on the Adriatic coast-line, face perhaps the toughest tests: last year’s silver medallist Primorje Rijeka (CRO) and Jadran Herceg Novi (MNE) both have to fight hard to reach the group stage.

The four group-winners were paired with the respective runners-up in London, where the draw was conducted by LEN Sports&Office Manager Marco Birri, and attended by Tom Chambers (CEO OC 2016), Kieran Walsh (project manager OC), Natalie Cunningham (competition manager OC) and David Rouger (Len TV & Marketing Director).

Primorje Rijeka (CRO), runner-up in the Final Six last May, will clash Waspo Hannover (GER). The Germans line up a handful of fine foreign players and as a demonstration they challenged the Hungarian participants in the previous stages: held OSC on a draw in round one and almost did the same against Szolnok.

Oradea (ROU), reached the prelims two years ago, now faces OSC Budapest. The Hungarians, surprise runners-up in their domestic league last season, came first in 2014 in the second round but that time Szolnok ousted them in the play-offs.

Szolnok will meet Marseille: the new Hungarian champion, fielding half of the national team and three Serbian world champions, is an outstanding favourite to make the prelims again.

Jadran (MNE) can be the first Montenegrin club in four years which make the prelims but they have a mountain to climb: playing with Brescia was perhaps the last thing they had dreamed of. Last weekend Jadran went through with three single-goal wins while the Italians, despite finishing second, remained undefeated in the previous round as well.

Oradea-OSC, Jadran-Brescia in Champions League 3rd round

The draw for the last qualification round for the Champions League preliminary stage was held Tuesday in London on the occasion of a site visit by LEN for the 2016 European Swimming Championships. It unveiled the play-off match-ups of the teams ready to go head to head on home-and-away basis to determine who advances to the 10-round group stage of Europe's top-tier club competition. Close battles can be expected with the match-ups featuring CSM Oradea facing OSC, and Jadran Herceg Novi meeting Brescia. Hot favourite Primorje EB Rijeka, runner-up of last year's edition, meets Waspo 98 Hannover, the revelation of the qualification phase so far for a tough 2-game showdown. Hungarian champion Szolnok will first travel to Marseille where a hungry French squad awaits.
