Solid USA men beat Brazil, win Pan Ams gold
The USA men's team won a 6th consecutive Pan American Games gold medal after beating Brazil in the final of the 2015 edition in Toronto 11-9 on Wednesday. Following the semifinal win over rivals Canada, and the qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the US men could conclude their successful week in Canada by clinching yet another Pan Ams gold. The difference in the match-up with Brazil was already made in the first half by the Dejan Udovicic coached side. In the second period Brazil got back to 2-2 from being 2-0 down but the following 3 goals were scored by USA as they grabbed a lead than would be maintained until the end despite Brazil hanging on in trailing 2 goals. In the final quarter it was Josh Samuels who scored from extra man but saw Bernardo Gomes quick to respond on the other end for the 11-9 score. And with still 5.37 to go, the Brazilians looked to have plenty of time in their attempts of forcing a comeback. However sloppy play and an excelling USA goalie Merill Moses prevented Brazil from scoring in the remainder as USA held on to win and claiming their 6th straight gold medal.Canada took the bronze medal by dominating Argentina in the second half to win 16-8. Mexico finished 5th thanks to a 11-14 victory over Venezuela while Cuba took over in the second half of their match-up with Ecuador to triumph 13-6 and finish in 7th place. In dominant fashion the USA women's national team claimed a 4th straight Pan American Games gold medal in Toronto on Tuesday. In the final even arch rivals Canada could not come close to stopping the reigning Olympic champions who walked in the second period and did not looked back on their way to a 13-4 victory. Maggie Steffens and Courtney Mathewson led Team USA on offence scoring 4 goals each. Monika Eggens netted 2 of Canada's 4 team goals. Brazil claimed the bronze medal thanks to a 9-6 win over Cuba. USA men top Canada, qualify for Rio 2016
In a highly anticipated semifinal clash USA overcame arch rivals Canada 9-8 and qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games. Team USA made it to the final of the 2015 Pan American Games edging Canada on Monday, and when Brazil defeated Argentina 15-9 in the following semifinal, the Dejan Udovicic coached side knew their berth at the next year's Olympics was ensured. Just one spot for Rio 2016 was available at the Pan American Games but since Brazil, as host nation, automatically is granted a berth, the next highest ranked team will take the sole available place for qualification.
The match-up in Toronto was expectedly close even still in the fourth quarter when John Conway got Canada back to 6-5 with 4.37 to go. In the next minutes however USA looked to decide the outcome in their favour. Tony Azevedo (penalty shot) and Alex Bowen scored consecutive goals and even after Kevin Graham hit one to pull the score back to 8-6, the defending champions were quick to respond as Luca Cupido netted the 9-6 goal. And with just 1.38 remaining that advantage proved enough, despite the Canadians scoring twice more and coming utterly close. In the final seconds shots by USA's captain Tony Azevedo (blocked) and Justin Boyd for Canada (saved) could not fall as Team USA held on for the close win and not much later saw their presence in Rio next year being confirmed. In other results on Monday from Toronto Venzuela made a striking comeback in the second half against Cuba to prevail and win 8-9 now going for a 5th place finish against Mexico who held Ecuador scoreless in the second half en route to a 17-7 victory.

Cuba, Argentina draw level
The preliminary round groups of the 2015 Pan American Games water polo competition are shaping up after three days of action. On Thursday the women's team from Cuba did a nice job by beating Argentina to take 2nd place in group A behind defending champs USA, who enjoyed a day off. In other results Brazil added a 2nd win by dominating Venezuela in a 1-18 blowout victory. Canada, already playing their 3rd match, held on to the top spot in the group for now rolling past Puerto Rico 19-5. In the men's tournament meanwhile, the most exciting match-up was the day's last one as Argentina needed a late equaliser from Estena Corsi with just 0.40 remaining to draw level with Cuba 7-7. Favourites Brazil and Canada each noted big wins to consolidate their respective top 2 positions in group B as the tournament approaches the play-off phase. The second day of water polo competition at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto did not produced too much surprisement. All favourites did what was expected as only the first match-up of the day proved to be somewhat close. The Argentine women held on to beat Mexico 8-10. It proved to be the build-up to a one-sided day in terms of results. The following game saw USA cruising past Cuba 18-3 while Canada had no trouble overcoming Venezuela: 4-15. In the men's tournament, later on Wednesday Argentina crushed Ecuador 8-21 while the USA men produced the same offence and just conceded 4 goals in their match-up with Cuba. Brazil tops Canada
The opening day of the 2015 Pan American Games water polo tournament proved to be a successful one for not only favourites USA but also the teams from Brazil. Both the men and women faced fellow contenders and hosts Canada with the women posting an encouraging 7-7 tie as Helene Badocco scored the equaliser for Brazil with still 2.33 left on the clock. Shots went back and forth and Brazil even got a chance to win but their extra man play with under half a minute remaining could not be converted. The Brazilian men's side topped that result by defeating Canada 11-9 despite remaining scoreless in the final period. Felipe Perrone once more led Brazil on offence scoring 3 goals. Canada, where John Conway topped the scoring list with 3, went for a 0-2 run in the final period but it was not enough to erase the 4-goal deficit that was displayed on the scoreboard going into the final 8 minutes.
In other results defending champions USA cruised in their respective openers. The women raced past Mexico 25-3 and the men held Ecuador scoreless in a 27-0 blowout win. The teams from Venezuela both reached a draw. The women could not get past Puerto Rico, 11-11 the final score, and the men's side drew level with Mexico 9-9.

Who will stop USA from Pan Ams gold?
The Pan American Games will get underway on Tuesday in Toronto, Canada. The multi-sports event, held every four years, will see the men's water polo teams battling for the one and only available berth to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, preserved for the gold-medal winning team. The question will be who is capable of stopping USA. In the men's tournament Team USA won the last five editions, while their female counterparts did so the past 3 editions, with Canada as only other winner of the inaugural 1999 edition, held in Winnigpeg. But especially the men's team will face fierce resistance from two other major contenders coming from Brazil and Canada. In fact, both USA and Brazil went head to head for the bronze medal at the recent 2015 World League Super Final in Bergamo, Italy with the Brazilians completing a late comeback coming out on top after an epic shootout: 24-23.
As Serbia won the tournament and therewith took the first available spot for Rio 2016, both Americas representatives knew their chance would come seen as from Tuesday on they will go for an even more real shot at that 2016 Olympics berth. A third contender, not to be ruled out, will be home side Canada. The Canadians will up for a possible historic first Pan American gold medal and what better moment would it be than to do it in front of the home crowd while at the same time preserving their spot in the Olympic tournament of next year. The team, absent at the recent World League Super Final, instead is eyeing this tournament for a long time and used join training and two official matches against Montenegro at home as build-up to this highlight.
Meanwhile in the women's tournament defending champions USA and Canada look to be the main title contenders, although winning the tournament will not mean qualuification for next year's Olympics. Since the start of the women's tournament at the Pan American Games, in 1999, both USA and Canada always took the top 2 spots with USA winning the last three editions. But this time they'll face an even more pumped Canada side who are eager to show off their possibilities in front of their home crowd. Main outsider once again will be three-time bronze medal winners Brazil.
