IX VOLVO Cup

Volvo Cup day 3: Hungary completes revenge for last year's fumble

The results on day 2 pretty much decided the outcome of this year’s Volvo Cup already. Hungary impressed in their match against Croatia with tight defense and efficient offense and was expected to wrap the tournament up in style against Canada. Before this, Croatia attempted to restore their confidence against USA and they looked to do just that after a huge 5-1 first period. At 7-1 score halfway in the second period the 2012 Olympic champion seemed to lose focus a bit though. Motivated by the extrovert coaching style of head coach Dejan Udovicic, team USA set out to save themselves from another embarrassment. Whether or not this was successful is hard to decide. Croatia did not score as much as Hungary did against USA on day 1, but it is evident that Udovicic still has a lot of work to do before USA can even be considered an outsider at the Olympics next year. USA top scorer Brett Bonnani hit an impressive 3 goals but could still not compete with Croatian star shooters Sandro Sukno and Paulo Obradovic who scored 5 and 4 goals respectively.

The 3rd and final match for the Hungarians against Canada was expected to be a victory march for the superior home side and although the goals did not come as easy as earlier in the tournament, Hungary was leading 4-2 at half-time.
Immediately after the break Canada fought their way back into the game and silenced the 900 Hungarian fans when Nicolas Constantin-Bicari completed a hattrick for team Canada to make it 4-5 and take the lead.
It took Hungary until deep into the final quarter before they could restore the balance and take over again thanks to a goal by Balázs Erdélyi. But even at this point in the game Canada refused to give up. John Conway made it 8-8 with just over 3 minutes to go and an upset was still in the air. 3 missed penalty shots for Hungary did not help to put the game away either. Szolnok lefthander Márton Vámos then cashed in during a man up situation for Hungary and allowed his team some breathing room. With 30 seconds to go Erdélyi hit his 4th of the afternoon to finally secure the victory and complete Hungary’s 100% score for this weekend.

Volvo Cup day 2: Hungary impressive against Croatia

Although the audience greatly enjoyed the goal frenzy of yesterday, Hungary’s coaching staff was much less satisfied. Ahead of the tournament Tibor Benedek had emphasized the importance of defense and especially wanted to focus on this often undermined aspect of the game. The display against USA on day 1 was certainly entertaining, but also naïve and sometimes a little careless. This had to improve against Croatia if the hosts wanted to keep the tournament victory within reach.

Earlier in the day USA and Canada lined up for the battle of North America. Both teams know one another through and through and are often a thorn in each other’s eyes during qualification campaigns. The match that followed confirmed that these teams have few secrets between them. The 11-11 final score was a fair result and Canada will try to contain the Hungarians tomorrow to snatch 3rd place on goal difference.
After USA and Canada had warmed up the audience, it was time for the main event. The 1,000-seated BVSC swimming arena was completely sold out as Hungary and Croatia laced up. Hungary started with Attila Decker in goal after his Szolnok colleague Viktor Nagy had played the opening match against USA on day 1.
It was immediately visible that this was going to be a different kind of game than yesterday. Hungary looked much more organised in defence and the Croatian shooters could not find the space needed to beat Decker.
Ferenc Salamon broke the deadlock after 3 minutes and then added another one 2 minutes later to bring his total to 7. Croatia was struggling with the tight defence of their opponent and conceded another one early in the 2nd period before Maro Jokovic could finally get the visitors on the board. Hungary continued to dominate though and 2 goals by Dénes Varga made it 5-1 before Sandro Sukno could add a 2nd for Croatia to make the score look a little less painful at half-time.

After the break the Croatians tried to claw their way back into the game. Their efforts were in vain though.
Hungary went on scoring with another goal for Salamon and the first for left hander Márton Vámos.
Going into the final period with a 7-4 lead, Hungary’s victory was not endangered anymore. By adding 2 more goals each, the teams reached a final score of 9-6.
On day 3 Croatia will complete the tournament against USA after which Hungary and Canada will close up for the end of the Volvo Cup.

Volvo Cup day 1: goal fest for Hungary

The Volvo Cup is a yearly event hosted by the Hungarian water polo federation in preparation for the always busy international schedule. Last year Serbia won the tournament beating Germany, USA, and hosts Hungary.
This year USA is back to show how much progress the team of Dejan Udovicic made in the past year. Other opponents for 2013 World Champions Hungary are Canada, captained by OSC lefthander Kevin Graham, and 2012 Olympic gold medal winners Croatia.

On Friday evening, in the recently renovated BVSC swimming arena in Budapest, Croatia and Canada kicked off the event in front of the Hungarian crowd. Both teams struggled to get the fans involved in the match as they looked a bit stiff from the beginning. The 4-2 half-time score, in favour of Croatia, was a direct result of this. After the break the muscles loosened up and the pace of the game increased. The contest was especially interesting as both teams will face each other again in Group A (together with Brazil and China) of the 2015 World Championships later this year in Kazan, Russia. Although Croatia always looked the stronger team Canada was definitely not a push over. Led by Graham, who initiated almost every play, they managed to get plenty of action in attack. Croatia’s defence, and particularly goal keeper Josip Pavic, refused to cooperate with an early tournament upset though. With stars like Maro Jokovic and Niksa Dobud to produce goals, Croatia finally broke away from their opponent and cruised to an 11-5 victory.

As the stadium slowly filled up, we saw some unfamiliar faces appear for the Hungarians. The Volvo Cup is always a great opportunity for head coach Tibor Benedek to reward some of the talented youngsters for their efforts and impressive performances at their club. Replacing Eger centre-forward Balász Hárai and captain Dániel Varga, Vasas centre-forward Toni Német and Szeged starlet Krisztián Manhercz were given a chance to shine.
While Toni Nemeth looked slightly out of his depth at times, Manhercz stole the show with a fantastic long range lob to beat the shot clock in the 3rd quarter. Cheered on by the always enthusiastic Hungarian fans, the hosts quickly took the lead and never let it slip. The Hungarians certainly gave the audience their money’s worth with occasional gallery play and impressive goals. Main sponsor Volvo promised a charity donation of 90 000 HUF (approximately 300 euro) for each Hungarian goal and must have been wondering if this was a smart decision after the final 21-11 score. Ference Salamon, one of 3 OSC players in the team, topped the goal scorers list with 5 goals followed by Dénes Varga with 3.

On Day 2 of the tournament the most anticipated match of the weekend will take place. Hungary and Croatia go head-to-head in a game that most likely determines the winner of the Volvo Cup. USA against Canada features as a great warm up earlier in the day to get things started.
