Kazakhstan have successfully defended their Asian Games title after winning the 2014 edition in Incheon, South Korea by topping Japan 7-6 in the final on Wednesday. Kazakhstan claimed a second straight gold medal for the second time in their participating history after a run that included three straight titles between 1994 and 2002 before China claimed gold at the 2006 edition. The 7-6 final score was the same as the score in the 2010 edition gold medal final in Guangzhou, China where the Kazakh side edged hosts China. This time Japan was the opponent but things looked good right from the start for favorites Kazakhstan grabbing a 1-0 lead at quarter-time and a 4-2 advantage at half-time. It even went better after the break as the Japanese trailed 6-3 going into the final period. Then however things changed and Japan started a comeback, led by Koji Takei (playing for Honvéd in Hungary) and Mitsuaki Shiga, who scored 2 each. The one goal that Kazakhstan managed to score in the 4th quarter proved vital as therewith the slim lead was consolidated as Kazakhstan held on to win 7-6. Third place was claimed by China who defeated hosts South Korea 14-6 in the bronze medal match. Veteran Feihu Tan, set to play for Florentia in the Italian serie A1 league this season, was a standout shooting 5-for-6 in the contest.

|Thursday 25 September 2014, 21:00|Tim Hartog

The first day of the men's water polo tournament at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea featured no surprises. Favorites, Japan, Singapore and defending champions Kazakhstan all won their opening matches. Japan had the most difficult task in overcoming China but did so thanks to a good first and fourth quarter performance to win by three. Singapore kicked off their campaign in easy fashion running past Hong Kong who were held scoreless in the second and fourth period with a 13-4 final score as result. Finally Kazakhstan showed their dominance in the field by dominating hosts South Korea already leading the match 10-2 at half time. Without any danger in the second half this year's FINA World Cup hosts went on to record a big 18-6 victory concluding day 1.
