With the last matches of the Champions League first round weekend played on Sunday morning it became clear that both Ligamus Tbilisi and Montpellier will have to continue their European adventure in the Euro Cup tournament, after both finishing 6th in the respective groups. On the other end OSC Budapest and Mladost Zagreb consolidated their leading positions and in case of Mladost even did so by winning 5 out of 5 matches in Herceg Novi. Last year's Euro Cup finalists have boosted their confidence ahead of the domestic season start and the Champions League 2nd round draw where some of Europe's top teams will join in. On Sunday Mladost convincingly defeated hosts Jadran 5-13 behind 4 goals from emerging Croatian international Luka Bukic. In other matches Sintez Kazan used a 7-2 second-quarter run to down Montpellier 16-10 sending them to the Euro Cup while Oradea could not get past Hannover who enjoyed a nice 0-2 start as both sides eventually drew level at 9-9. In group A in Marseille the top 3 was formed with the final matches' results although the leading positions of winners OSC Budapest and last year's Euro Cup winners Spartak Volgograd was not endangered. Spartak powered themselves past Ligamus Tbilisi 9-20 despite trailing 5-4 at quarter-time. Konstantin Kiselev and Sergey Lisunov led the way for the Russians scoring 4 each. Radnicki managed to finish in 3rd place after beating Posillipo 6-10 on Sunday morning with standout Nikola Dedovic as top scorer netting 4 shots. OSC was up in the final match facing hosts Marseille who tried hard but suffered from a quick 1-5 deficit in the opening quarter as the Hungarian ran away with the 8-12 victory, led by Joe Kayes and Ferenc Salamon who scored 4 each. Now powerhouses like Primorje, Szolnok and Pro Recco will join in in the second round, to be played in four different cities in four groups from 17-19 October. The draw for the second round is expected next week.

Marseille tops Posillipo, Spartak too much for Radnicki

The home fans in group A of the Champions Leage first round in Marseille got something to cheer for on Saturday as the local heroes managed to held off Posillipo to claim their second win of the weekend: 14-13. The home side, led by Tyler Martin's 3 goals, got the slight advantage in the first period but held on in the remainder of the close match-up before Posillipo, where left-hander Valentino Gallo netted 3 shots as well, tried to equalise in the final period. Marseille however withstood the attack, won the match and are now tied with Radnicki in points in group A after the Serbs had swallow a loss on Saturday. Spartak Volgograd, together with OSC leading the group, proved too much for Radnicki to handle as they, mainly due to 4-1 deficit at quarter-time, had to settle for the 12-10 defeat. Pavel Khalturin finished as the game's top scorer with 4 goals. As mentioned, OSC Budapest maintained their leading position together with Spartak as the Hungarian side rolled past last place Ligamus Tbilisi. A 6-0 first-quarter performance set the tone for a dominant display that ended in a 22-7 victory. Meanwhile in group B, played in Herceg Novi, Mladost remained unbeaten after the 4th round. CSM Oradea was the opponent on Saturday but trailed 6-3 at half-time. Luka Bukic and Ante Vukicevic, each scoring 3, led their team as Mladost even won the second half to post a 12-7 win. For Kazan, things were different on Saturday. The Russians had all trouble overcoming Hannover but thanks to a 1-4 second-quarter performance eventually succeeded by winning 10-11. Hosts Jadran gave their fans some to cheer for recording their second win as Montpellier was held off 9-7. Prodigy Stefan Pjesivac topped the Jadran scorers list with 4.

OSC tops Radnicki - Champions League day 2

|Friday 26 September 2014, 11:15|Tim Hartog

The second day of the Champions League first qualification round, in group A in Marseille, started with an interesting match-up where OSC added a nice three points after their 9-9 draw with Spartak Volgograd on Thursday by beating 2012 Euro Cup winners and last year's Champions League finalist Radnicki 4-8. The Serbs actually started off great and took a 3-1 lead at quarter-time before the match turned around completely. A 0-3 run by the Hungarians, led by Joseph Kayes (3) and Gabor Kovacs (2 goals) saw the momentum switching and the Serbs were unable to get it back. After a levelled 1-1 third-period, OSC dominated the final eight minutes scoring three more goals as they won it by four and now convincingly can look forward to the big match-up with Posillipo on Friday evening. In group B the Romanians and French champions drew level in the early session opening match. For the French it meant the first point after their 12-9 loss to Hannover yesterday while Oradea picked up their second. But the French might had hoped for more. A 0-3 second-quarter performance had them up 2-4 at half-time and still up ahead 4-5 after the third period. Oradea, thanks to goals from Serbian duo Vojislav Cupic and Milos Korolija pulled back a goal, and that was just enough to force the tie and pick up a second point in group B so far.
Hosts Jadran were unable to reboud from their opening day draw against Oradea as the local heroes fell to Russian runners-up Sintez Kazan, 6-8, where Russia top scorer at the Budapest 2014 European champs, Konstantin Stepanyuk, led the way with two goals. Jadran centre-forward Boris Zlokovic, held scoreless in yesterday's match, was the top scorer for the home side netting two as well. Mladost gained their second win in two matches as they lived up to the favorite role playing Waspo Hannover and winning 13-8. Andrija Basic (Mladost) and Erik Bukowski (Hannover) netted four shots each being the game's top scorers. In group A hosts Marseille responded nicely to yesterday's tough loss to Radnicki by rolling past Ligamus Tbilis in the Friday early session, 16-4. Spartak Volgograd handed Posillipo their first loss as the Russians added three points to the one from Thursday's match by holding off the Italian Euro Cup semi-finalist of last year. The Russians triumphed 8-13.

Radnicki holds off Marseille in Champions League openers

|Thursday 25 September 2014, 22:24|Tim Hartog

The Champions League is underway. On opening day of the 1st qualification round in group A, played in Marseille, it was last year's finalist Radnicki who got off to a nice start as they managed to get the better of the French hosts in a difficult first meeting: 7-8. The Serbian side for most of the match led by a pair of goals, only to see Marseille, with top scorer in left-hander Ugo Crousillat with four goals, cutting the deficit by a goal in the final period but still falling short to a possible tie. In the first match on Thursday Italian squad Posillipo, Euro Cup semi-finalist last season, fired off from the beginning against Georgian champion Ligamus Tbilisi to lead 6-1 at quarter-time and never looked back en route to a 12-4 victory. Montenegrin top scorer Aleksandar Radovic once again led the scoresheet netting 5 goals in the win. The final encounter of the day saw last year's Euro Cup winning side Spartak Volgograd and new Hungarian powerhouse OSC being tied 9-9 after a back-and-forth first half and 7-goal third quarter. Meanwhile in group B, played in Herceg Novi, things got underway with German outsider Waspo Hannover claiming a nice win over French champion Montpellier 12-9 thanks to an excellent first half showing after which the Germans led 8-2 at half-time. In the other matches Mladost got off to a convincing star by edging Russian runner-up Sintez Kazan 9-7 (with young gun Luka Bukic netting 3 goals) and hosts Jadran Herceg Novi could not get past Romanian champion CSM Oradea: 6-6. The Romanians had to come back both in the second and fourth period but managed to do so and got themselves rewarded with the draw. Left-hander Luka Sekulic (Jadran) and Tiberiu Negrean (Oradea), scoring two goals each, shared top scorer honours.
