In scoring just his only goal of the game he decided the outcome of the match and single-handedly kept Germany's chances for possible 2015 world championships qualification alive. Jan Obschernikat quickly finished off an extra man he had drawn by a counter-attack as gave his team an 8-9 win over Russia in the very last second of the match. It means the Germans will continue the race for a seventh-place ranking while the young but clearly talented Russian side after a close match had to settle for the bitter defeat. The Erkin Shagaev coached side will now play to avoid 12th and last place in their return to the European stage after having missed out on the 2012 edition in the Netherlands.

In the second match of the day the opponent of Romania in the next round of the battle for 7th place was to be decided. France was the favorite, won the match, but not easy against a Georgia side who managed to stay close for 2 1/2 periods. Then consecutive goals from Thibaut Simon, Remi Saudadier and centre-forward Romain Blary got the French up to 4-8 virtually deciding the match. Despite Georgia hung on and pulled the score back to 6-9 with still just under 7 minutes remaining, the French were not to be surprised. The defence was tightened and thanks to a pair of unanswered hits from Alexandra Camarasa and standout captain Michaël Bodegas (6-9, 6-10) France secured themseleves of a battle with Romania in the next round.

Italy joined group winners Hungary and Montenegro in the semi-finals after a hard-fought 8-7 quarter-final win over Croatia on Wednesday. A win that came after a match in which Italy led throughout but was never sure of the victory. Trailing 4-2 with 1.43 to go in the first half, the Croats scored twice in a row to equalise when Luka Loncar scored one ealy third quarter. However it remained Italy who kept regaining their lead but it was not until the final two minutes before the decision looked to have been made. Starting centre-back Andro Buslje received his third personal foul when a penalty shot was awarded to Italy, convicingly converted by Alex Giorgetti who once again stepped up this time netting it in the left top corner. A tense final phase followed, especially after Petar Muslim, scoring his second, brought Croatia back to within one (8-7) from the left wing on man-up as still 1.38 was remaining. Croatia even got another excellent opportunity when Italy's Pietro Figlioli was excluded for 20 seconds but failed to convert as Ivan Milakovic attempt from the post, heavily guarded, was saved. Italy played out the clock the following posession so that Croatia coach Ivica Tucak could take a time-out with still 20 seconds remaining on the game clock. Italy's youngster Alessandro Velotto was excluded on the centre-back position guarding Niksa Dobud, the Croats got a man-up with seven seconds to go but Andelo Setka's final attempt was blocked as the tight Italian defence held on and secured the victory and semi-final berth now facing hosts Hungary on Friday.

And the last semifinalist turned out to be Serbia after they held off Greece 9-13 in the final match on Wednesday at the Alfred Hajos stadium. Just over 3,000 were present to watch the title favorites now playing Greece in the first play-off match for them in order to qualify with the final four where Montenegro will await. In contrast to the first quarter-final, this one was less close. Greece showed off their talent, dynamics and shooting power, especially in the opening quarter where the teams looked levelled, but had to sufer the frist blow in the second period when Serbia took the first significant advantage grabbing a 3-6 lead. From that point on, not only did the Greek showed to be a resillient side, they continuously had to fight back not even to take the lead but just for consolation. When Ioannis Fountoulis converted a penalty with 2.14 to go in the first half setting the score at 5-6, it looked as if Greece would succeed in keeping pace with the Serbs. But things turned out different.
Andrija Prlainovic netted his only goal of the game from the left wing for the 5-7 beforethe main break, and saw his team-mates Milan Aleksic (from way out) and Filip Filipovic scoring a pair of goals to open the third period as all of a sudden Serbia led a seemingly comfortable 5-9. It proved to be the breaking point in the score as the reigning World League champs controlled the match in the second half confirming their progression in this tournament after a tricky start that led to an all-or-nothing situation in the preliminary phase game against Spain. Now group A winners Montenegro await in a big semi-final clash that serves as re-match of the teams' meeting in last year's World Championships when the Montenegrins eliminated Serbia for the medals en route to a 2nd place finish themselves.
