Day 9 of the 2014 European Championships saw France taking the tournament's seventh place. Stunning the 2012 Olympics hosts Great Britain 5-8 in the opening match, the young French team closed out their tournament in positive fashion gaining their first triumph on the moment it counted the most. The Brits suffered from an early 1-4 setback, came back as close to 3-4, but the French response to 3-5 and eventually 4-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter proved too much for 'GB'. The team had to settle for a dissapointing 8th and last place finish in what was already a sad situation as their funding by UK Sport was cut last March and so the team's future remains in doubt. The French meanwhile hope this experience and victory could be the stepping stone for the near future to build on.
Hosts Hungary were the first in action in a pair of quater-finals played on Tuesday. Despite the rain a respectable amount of spectators turned out in the Alfred Hajos pool to support their team in this all-or-nothing match-up. It looked to have helped as the Magyar side came out ready and sharp but saw an equally ready Russian team. Goals were exchanged but the home team had the final answer of the opening quarter as Dora Antal shot one home to give her team a 2-1 lead at quarter time.
A different scene was on display in the second period where Hungary simply dominated. Four straight goals in four minutes and the Hungarians already looked to have made a strong, if not decisive, push for the victory leading 6-1 with three minutes remaining in the first half. Although Russia's Anna Grineva scored one the 6-2 score at half-time made little believe in the chances for the Russian ladies. In the third session they fought hard to make a comeback, actually opened up scoring through Nadezhda Iarondaykina but as Hungary captain Orsolya Takacs had the answer just over a minute later, the victory for the Hungarian looked to be safe. Yes, by then already. Hungary looked in control and after overpowering Russia to establish the advantage they needed there was little Russia could do. Dora Antal and Rita Keszthelyi led the fans cheer once more opening the final period for the 11-5 score before Russia closed out the match through netted shots from Grineva and Karimova to eventually lose by 4.
The following and second quarter-final proved to be much close and even went onto penalties to decide a winner as Italy edged Greece. But it was anyone's game in regulation. The score just once exceeded the single-goal mark when Italy gained a 6-4 lead early third quarter through standout Roberta Bianconi but remained close after. When Arianna Garibotti finally managed to score in the fourth period after numerous opportunities, also on extra man, for the Greek, it now seemed to have cost the Georgios Morfesis coached side the game. It went down to the final possession when a disciplined Greek side got the ball to centre-forward who powered home one of her trademark shots with just an incredible 0.3 seconds remaining in the game netting the 7-7 equaliser and thus forcing a penalty shootout. There however the experienced Italian ladies saw goalie Giulia Gorlero saving Greece's first attempt from Christina Tsoukala right away after Roberta Bianconi had openend the series by converting hers. Italy made no mistake while the decision was being made when left-hander Stefania Charalampidi saw her attempt being saved by Gorlero as Italy won the series 4-2 and the game 11-9 to now set up a big meeting in the semi-finals with the Netherlands.
