Pro Recco sure of Final Six after Jug draw

The major outcome of the final day of the Champions League preliminaries was already there after the first game of the day. In Greece Olympiacos held Jug to a 9-9 tie which means Pro Recco is sure of qualification for the Final Six tournament in Barcelona taking the final available spot. The back-and-forth game in Piraeus was always close so Jug knew they were up for a tough task of at least gaining a win in order to keep the pressure to Pro Recco, in action later on Saturday hosting ZF-Eger. But the Greek home side had proven before to be especially tough to beat at home and despite the visitors from Croatia leading 7-8 and 8-9 in the 4th quarter, Olympiacos equalized late in the game to shatter all Jug hopes of taking the last spot available in the Final Six tournament, to be played from 29-31 May.In the other games it was Radnicki who completed their unbeaten run in these preliminaries, as only side, by beating Galatasaray at home 13-8. Partizan came out nicely in their match-up with second seed Brescia at home in Belgrade showing some stifling defence in the second half, well led by goalkeeper Slobodan Soro to edge the Italians 6-5. A critical block on the goal line by Milos Cuk on a Michael Bodegas 1-on-1 attempt and two well executed goals from standout Nikola Dedovic and ultimately Nikola Jaksic on man-up secured the victory for the Vladimir Vujasinovic coached side. The game's top scorer however was Francesco di Fulvio for Brescia who netted a triple in a good shooting performance. Also finishing on a positive note was CSM Oradea who saw their 8th consecutive Romanian championship last week being followed by an 11-9 win over German representative Spandau for their first and only win of this preliminary phase.

In group A Primorje clinched the group win by beating Final Six hosts Barceloneta 7-3. The home side pretty much dominated the game and held the visitors from Barcelona scoreless in the entire second half. Barceloneta can now gear up for the Spanish play-offs and a Final Six quarter-final meeting with Brescia on day 1 of the tournament, 29 May.

Finishing the action of day 10 on Saturday was Pro Recco who confirmed to be a Final Six contender adding another three points to their prelims total as they knocked off Hungarian champions ZF-Eger 14-9. This game however was all about the first in which Recco dominated and seemingly comfortable led 11-5 at half-time. Almost all the players joined in of the offence action with Federico Lapenna finishing as top scorer with 3. But a balanced attack and 9 goal scorers displayed the cohesive side of the Italians look to have. Eger did pulled back a pair of goals in the final quarter but it proved just to have the score look a bit better as they finished off a preliminary campaign on the 6th and final spot in group A with three points and can now fully focus on the upcoming Hungarian finals series when they face Szolnok. Recco meanwhile will still be battling for the European club championship starting on day 1 of the Final Six tournament by taking on group B 3rd seed Partizan, a re-match of the memorable 2011 finals in Rome where the Serbian side surprised favorite Recco by winning 11-7. The Italian powerhouse however dominated the following 2012 Champions League season en route to an 11-8 final win over Primorje.

Champions League Final Six race to be decided

A little over five months after the Champions League preliminary phase kicked off the best six teams are on the verge of determine this year's European club champion during the Final Six tournament in Barcelona late May. And with the 10th and final round of preliminary action to be contested next Saturday the questions basically comes down to who will take the final available spot left for Barcelona 2014. The team will come out of group A and one could say 2012 winners Pro Recco are the favorites to clinch it. The Pino Porzio coached side currently holds second place in the group behind deserved victors Primorje and can only be upset by Jug Dubrovnik who trail two points and will need a win in Piraeus, Greece against Olympiacos in any case. And that is not, at all, an easy task to complete. The outgoing Croatian champions held off Olympiacos 11-9 on day 1 but the Greek showed to be an ever tough side to beat, especially at home where two of their three wins so far were claimed. However on Saturday they find themselves out of Final Six contention while Jug still has everything to fight for, despite not having all in their own hands anymore. Pro Recco meanwhile hosts Hungarian champions ZF-Eger. The Hungarians will be looking to close out the campaign on a positive note although this European season turned out into a dissapointment, mostly displayed in the current and final 6th place with just three points out of nine games. They will face a Pro Recco team more and more gaining form while set and ready to start the battle for the Italian championship with Brescia in a best-of-3 series commencing next week.

In other games the teams either will try to gain momentum for the decisive phase in the respective national championship play-offs or already for the Final Six. Exceptions are there though. Olympiacos became national champion last weekend while Jug was eliminated the semi-finals by Mladost so are done on national level already.

Group A winners Primorje take on Final Six hosts Barceloneta at home in Rijeka in the second game of the group on Saturday. A match-up that saw the now visitors taking a close and surprising 8-7 win back home in Barcelona on opening day late November so that Primorje still has something to take care of on Saturday. The question could remain how much they will considering the Croatian play-offs finals start next week as well.

In group B the picture is pretty much clear. The top 3 sides are known and cannot even swop positions with a favourable result on Saturday so the respective outcomes will all about the athlets' pride, a good test case and perhaps gaining momentum. The only unbeaten side of the preliminaries, Radnicki, will battle Galatasaray who are on the verge of starting the Turkish play-offs with the semi-finals. The Serbs meanwhile are coming off a heart-break loss to rivals Crvena zvezda in the Serbian play-offs finals in Kragujevac now trailing 2-0 in the best-of-5 series with game 3 in Belgrade coming up. One could imagine that decisive contest next week will have the priority for the Uros Stevanovic coached side who is missing centre-forward Milos Korolija while star and top scorer Boris Zlokovic could be rested after struggling with injury during Wednesday's clash against Zvezda.

A side definitely playing to gain momentum towards one of the highlights of their season will be Partizan. In a nice performance by the young but resilient side, coached by Vladimir Vujasinovic, last year's Final Four hosts held on take the third place and qualify for the Final Six out of group B. And with the Serbian championship 3rd place claimed last Tuesday, and thus securing their wild card for next Champions League season to be eligible, the focus can now fully go to getting as much of a result possible late May in the 2013 World Championships water polo pool. And with the Italian powerhouse of AN Brescia paying the Serbian capital a visit a nice test awaits Partizan closing out the preliminaries on the way to Barcelona. But Brescia is ready to prove their second place in the group is legitimate and they are as much as a title contender as the other five teams. Brescia eliminated Posillipo in the Italian championship semi-finals 2-0 last Wednesday and will now contest a much anticipated match-up against reigning champions Pro Recco starting 10 May.

And finally fresh Romanian champions CSM Oradea, their 8th consecutive national title was secured last Monday, take on German record champions Spandau at home in a battle just for the statistics. For the Germans it will be an opportunity to fine-tune the final slight chances new, interim, head coach Peter Röhle might want to implement. He became in charge after Hungarian Andras Gyöngyösi resigned with immediate effect due to differences with the club's management last weekend. Spandau so far collected a nice 10 points and have an 8-6 win over Oradea from day 1 under their belt.
