Pro Recco beats Crvena Zvezda by four

Waterpolo Worl| Saturday 26 October 2013, 19:12 | Tim Hartog

The first two of four big matchups in the Champions League third round saw mixed results. Last year's Euro Cup winners Radnicki made a big step towards the preliminary round by beating Vouliagmeni 11-5, thanks to their superstars Boris Zlokovic and Filip Filipovic who scored three and four respectively. In Hungary it was Szolnok who held 2012 finalist Primorje to a 10-all draw in the first of two legs. The home side came back from trailing 8-10 in the final three minutes thanks to goals by Marton Vamos and Nobert Hosnyanszky (pictured), the last with just 0.44 remaining. Paulo Obradovic tried his luck in the game's final attempt on goal but hit the bar as the second leg in Rijeka, Croatia in two weeks time will now decide the outcome of this duel. Denes Varga finished as overall top scorer netting four for Primorje while Stefan Mitrovic hit three for Szolnok. In the most anticipated matchup 2012 Champions League winners Pro Recco enjoyed a nice start of the two-leg meeting with reigning champs Crvena Zvezda beating the Serbs 9-5 at home. The game started close but Recco's 4-2 run in the third period proved decisive. Zvezda was even held scoreless in the final period as the home side scored one more to win by four. Centre forward Matteo Aicardi came up big for Recco scoring four goals. Also gaining an advantage right away was CSM Oradea who used the home start to defeat Sintez Kazan 13-8.

Jadran Herceg Novi wins close quarterfinals race in group D

Waterpolo World| Sunday 27 October 2013, 10:20 | Tim Hartog

Group B was the first to be completed in the Euro Cup first round on Sunday. Both favorites hosts Posillipo and Spartak Volgograd made no mistakes and both clinched a sport in the quarterfinals. In the early morning Volgograd held off Bucharest 11-9, followed by Posillipo beating Montpellier 11-7, led by three goals each from both Valentino Gallo and Montenegrin centre forward Filip Klikovac (pictured). In group A it was Dinamo Tbilisi's final chance on Sunday in a head-to-head duel with Sète from France. But it was not to be. The Georgian champs only looked to close in coming back from 5-9 to 7-9 in the fourth quarter before Sète restored the three-goal lead twice. The consolation goal by Mikheil Bagaturia with just 4 seconds on the clock came too late for Tbilisi who finished third and saw Sète progressing to the final eight. Dinamo Moscow became group winners thanks to a clear 5-11 victory over hosts Valletta. In group C the young team of Primorac Kotor secured a spot in the quarterfinals after a tough 7-9 win over Olympic Nice. The French side had the better start, got up leading 5-3 in the second quarter but could keep up their level of play and saw Primorac slowly but surely taking over. Although both sides remained close Primorac was on the better side of the score from the third quarter onwards, their first leads since the 0-1 score by Constantin Kudaba early in the first. Both teams struggled to find the net in the final period before Dorde Tesanovic shot home the winning goal with 2.22 remaining, much to the delightment of the bench and Montenegrin fans who realised a spot with the final eight was ensured.

In group D the finish was ultimately close. On Sunday Marseille crushed Shturm Ruza 32-2 but fell just close to advancing. One goal would have made the difference. In the second match Mladost defeated Jadran Herceg Novi 9-6 (with five goals from Kristijan Milakovic) and that ment both of these sides will continue to the quarterfinals. Jadran and Marseille finished with the same amount of points and were levelled 7-7 in their head-to-head matchup on day 1 so the goal difference would decided the outcome. And with 26 to 25, the Montenegrin squad, coached by former great Vladimir Gojkovic, won that close race to finish second.

Posillipo and Spartak Volgograd tied in top group B match - Euro Cup day 3 results

Waterpolo World| Saturday 26 October 2013, 11:51 | Tim Hartog

The only morning session in the Euro Cup first round on Saturday was played in the city of Utrecht, because of a five-team group. A fired-up Olympic Nice side started off well battling Acquachiara who crawled back in the second and third quarter after which a tense and close game followed. Nice-standout David Babic shot home his second goal of the game with 0.20 left in the third quarter to put his team up 8-6 before the Italians responded big time by scoring three straight goals in the fourth period to lead 8-9 with 3.41 to go. That advantage lasted until just under two minutes when Nice finally converted one of their many chances on the break-away counter with top scorer Arnoud Jablonski hitting from five meters to level the game 9-9. Although both sides tried their luck in the remainder of the game Nice got the ultimate opportunity after Stefano Luongo got excluded with 0.42 remaining but could not convert out of a time-out, mainly due to furosious defence by Acquachiara, so both teams shared the points. The first side two gain two wins was Primorac who took a key win beating Vojvodina 11-6 playing without the leads of head coach Veljko Uskokovic and assistant Damir Matanovic. Both sides were close in the first half before Primorac, led by Nikola Murisic (pictured) who scored three of his total four goals in the third period, walked away. The Serbs tried hard but were not exactly on target from distance and unable to force anything different. Goals by Dorde Tesanovic and Zeljko Durovic in the fourth period, in which Vojvodina remained scoreless, decided things as Primorac now holds the best cards not only to advance to the quarterfinals but even the group victory. They will close out their tournament on Sunday playing Olympic Nice.

Evening session
The other three groups continued action in the evening, or rather afternoon in case of group A, played in Valletta. The two game were decided by single-goal margins. Dinamo Moscow gained their second win in two days despite being pushed to the limit by Sète who came close, scoring the final two goals of the match but got nothing at the end: 9-10. In the second game home side Valletta had legitimate hopes of taking their first points leading 12-11 with 2.23 remaining before Tato Nikolaishvili came up big for Tbilisi scoring twice in a row including the winner with 0.47 on the game clock. In group B Montpellier responded to yesterday's loss by holding off hosts Steaua Bucharest 11-9 on Saturday to gain their first points. The second in that group, likely to be the matchup between both favorites for the overall victory, saw hosts Posillipo and Russian national champs Spartak Volgograd sharing the points in a high-scoring contest: 11-11. Left-hander Valentino Gallo (pictured) scored a team-high four for Posillipo while Nikolay Lazarev did the same amount of damage for Volgograd. In group D Montenegrin side Jadran Herceg Novi caused the second trash of Russian Shturm 2002 Ruza in two days. With both Luka Sekulic and Jovan Saric scoring an incredible 11 goals Jadran simply cruised to winning 33-4 win. In group C hosts UZSC made a comeback in the final period to clich a 6-all draw with Olympic Nice before Aquachiara took second place after gaining a clear 15-7 win over Vojvodina Novi Sad who played their last game of the tournament and are sure to be eliminated. In the game against the Italians, who were playing without Amaurys Perez who flew back to Italy to make his second appearance in the nationally televised 'Dancing with the Stars' show, saw Stefano Luongo and Antonio Petkovic being on target scoring four apiece. Especially Luongo showcased his shooting talent from the left corner on multiple occasions. On defence Vojvodina struggled all game to force any Italian errors or exclusions and eventually had to settle for the 8-goal defeat. The outcome of the group will be decided on Sunday with the two sides to progress to the quarterfinal being determined by then.

The second day of Euro Cup action in group C in the Netherlands marked the start of competition in the three other groups. Home side UZSC caused the first surprise of the matches in group C with an 11-7 win over Vojvodina. Left-hander and top scorer Joep van den Bersselaar's four goals, including two straight in the fourth quarter, proved vital for the Dutch side who were considered to be underdogs of this group. Meanwhile in Zagreb, Croatia hosts Mladost started things off by crushing Shturm 2002 Ruza 25-1, led by Andro Gagulic and Marko Martinic'
four goals each. In group B, played in Naples, Russian champs Spartak Volgograd gained their first win by holding off Montpellier 11-7. The second game of the day in Utrecht, marking the first of Italian representative Acquachiara turned out to be the highlight of the day. Primorac stayed close all the way in a game that featured plenty of goals, controversy as one of the Primorac fans was ejected from the game for abuse of the referee and Italian coach Paulo de Crescenzo. The Montenegrins, playing without coach Uskokovic from halfway through the third period after receiving two yellow cards, looked determined and close to an upset. But the quality of the Acquachiara squad decided things in the fourth quarter. Consecutive nice goals by centre forward Olexandr Sadovyy (backhand) and left-hander Luigi di Costanzo had the Italians up 13-11 with two minutes to go. A quick backhand goal from Primorac-standout Nikola Murisic with just seconds on the clock just changed the final score. Veteran Amaurys Perez, deadly from outside, scored a game-high four goals for Acquachiara. In group A the French players from Sète gained a narrow 9-10 victory over home side Valletta while Dinamo Moscow started off by beating Georgian champs Dinamo Tbilisi 13-7. Favorites for the win in group B, Posillipo, took three points right away as well topping Romanian representative Steaua Bucharest 11-6 in a clear win. The second game of the day in Zagreb saw Jadran Herceg Novi and French champs Marseille drawing 7-7. Read more for all results and a full schedule.

The Euro Cup tournament got underway in group C, played in Utrecht, the Netherlands on Thursday as Primorac Kotor took a win right away topping hosts UZSC 5-9. The victory could prove to be valuable as the young Montenegrin squad lost two players to an exclusion with substitution including important left-hander Damjan Danilovic, already in the second quarter after having scored two in the opening period, and Nikola Nikolov in the fourth quarter. But the home side was unable to benifit due to poor convertion of offensive opportunities while
Primorac scored at the right moments staying in the lead comfortably after a 0-3 run to open the match with. If both excluced Primorac players will be suspended for the next game, things will not get easier facing group favorites Acquachiara on Friday. In the second match an equally young but talented Vojvodina side rolled their way to a 12-7 victory over Olympic Nice. Powered by Dusan Vasic' (pictured) four goals in the first half and stellar play from goalie Lazar Dobozanov the Serbian squad was superior to their French opponents in the second and third period after both teams were close at quarter time: 2-3. In the second half the French side suffered from several personal fouls and saw both Vojvodina players Miral Catovic and Igor Porobic scoring two exclamation points on man-up in the final minute as Novi Sad looks to be the main rival of Italian squad Acquachiara for the win in group C.
