The Hungarian men have produced what the women were unable to do: beating Russia at home in the 2013 Universiade gold medal final. A low scoring nailbiter was won 5-4 by Hungary on Wednesday to claim the top spot in Kazan, Russia. In a decisive third period Russia took the lead 2-3 thanks to Albert Zinnatullin but Hungary responded well scoring three consecutive goals courtesy of Adam Szentesi, Tamas Mezei and Balasz Somogyi to take control and lead 5-3 going into the final period. Russia did score through standout Sergei Lisunov but was unable to force the equalizer as the Balazs Vinzce coached side started celebrating their gold medal. The battle for bronze featured a lot more goals as Serbia took the lead 1-5 after the opening term already but saw Italy trimming down that lead to only two at half time: 5-7. The Italian seemed on a run to take over control midway through the third period leading 8-7 but two Srdan Vuksanovic goals got the Serbs back in the lead. A tense final eight minutes proved decisive as Serbia scored twice after Stefano Luongo had equalized (9-9) as they led 9-11 with 4.12 to go through goals by Nenad Stojcic and again Vuksanovic. Italy managed to come close, yet again, as Alessandro di Somma shot one home but center Boris Popovic sealed the deal scoring with 1.29 remaining to get Serbia the bronze medal.

Russian women take Universiade gold

print | Wednesday 17 July 2013, 07:43 | Tim Hartog
In a dominating performance the Russian women's team has claimed the gold medal at the 2013 Universiade at home in Kazan, Russia on Tuesday. A high-scoring final saw the hosts in control most of the game as they went on to win 18-11. A strong group, consisting of multiple senior national team members, took a 4-1 lead in the first period before Hungary got back in the game trailing 6-4 at the end of the opening session. However from the next term on Russia extended the gap and was never endangered in the remainder leading 12-6 at half time and 13-7 with eight minutes to go. The battle for the bronze medal was a closer encounter. Goals by Giulia Bartolini, at the end of the third, and Gloria Giachi deep in the fourth quarter, for Italy eventually sealed the deal as they held on to win 6-5. Australia closed out the tournament beating Japan 12-6 to finish in fifth place while France recorded an overtime victory over the USA 8-9 to take the seventh spot. Earlier on Tuesday two men's tournament ranking matches were played as United States held on to edge Japan 8-7 for fifth place while Australia prevailed in a close battle with Brazil 8-7 to finish seventh.
