First result of the ninth and penultimate preliminary round day in the Champions League group stage came from Tbilisi, Georgia where Dutch national champs Schuurman BZC secured a spot in the next round beating the home side Ligamus Tbilisi 7-10. Fellow contender Germany's Waspo '98 Hannover was defeated 14-4 in Greece against leader Vouliagmeni so the Dutch are through to the round of last sixteen. The favorites for overall win in group D made no mistake on Wednesday. Current number two Partizan held off German champ Wasserfreunde Spandau 8-1 at home while now leading side Szeged powered its way to a 17-8 victory over Romanian reigning champion CSM Oradea. Top scorer in the game for the Hungarians was Joseph Kayes scoring five goals. For Szeged, a win at Berlin against last placed Wasserfreunde Spandau on the final group stage day will secure them overall win and a good position for the round of last sixteen. All Partizan can do is win their final prelims match (at Galatasaray in Istanbul, Turkey) and hoping for a mistake by Szeged. If not, the Serbs are already sure of the second spot. The big matchup in group A between Hungarian side ZF-Eger and Russian champions Spartak Volgograd ended in a 8-6 win for the home side who fell just short of making up for their 10-7 defeat in Russia on day 2 to gain a better overall standing. Both teams are tied with 21 points apiece but the Russians have the slight advantage in the head-to-head results. Ferenc Salamon was the game's top scorer netting a triple for Eger. The Russians will battle Vouliagmeni at home in the final preliminary phase round in their final chance to force a change in the final rankings of the group.Greek powerhouse Olympiakos Piraeus delivered a nice performance against French reigning champs Montpellier at home. Securing their third place in group B, the Greek cruised past the French 18-6 on Wednesday, powered by five goals by top shooter and Greece international Ioannis Fountoulis.

In group C Italian representative Brescia is back in full force after an important 11-9 home win over French runners-up Marseille, powered by Marko Elez (4) and Italy international Christian Presciutti (3) as the winning side's top scorers. And with leader Barceloneta edging a tough Vojvodina squad 7-5 (Francisco Fernandez three goals) this group gets a more than exciting finish on February 27 as all teams behind the dominant Spaniards are still in the race for advancement. Marseille is the only team not to be in action having already played all eight matches now, but is in current fourth position and has to hope that Vojvodina will not gain any points playing Brescia at home.

The Champions League group stage has come to its final stage and still much is to be decided. Although giants Jug Dubrovnik (group B) and Barceloneta (group C) seem to have clinched a first place ranking, anything else is still possible. Group A will see an interesting ninth and penultimate round on Wednesday when Hungarian last year's playoffs finalists ZF-Eger host Russian champs Spartak Volgograd in a head-to-head battle for second place in the group behind Greek reigning national champion Vouliagmeni who are likely to beat Germany's number three Waspo '98 Hannover at home. Meanwhile in Tbilisi, Georgia the Dutch participant Schuurman BZC can secure the fourth and final ticket to the next round by beating the home side.

Behind group B leader Jug Dubrovnik, the battle for the rankings remain tense. The game between Olympiakos Piraeus and French champs Montpellier has a final, maybe theoratical chance for a better finish for the French. If the visitors want to avoid fourth place, and a possible tough matchup in the next round, winning in Greece by more then four goals is their final option. For the home side, points are vital in their race for the number two spot, now taken by Red Star Belgrade who are favorites to add three points in their matchup with Swiss participant SC Kreuzlingen in Switzerland.

Dimitrios Mazis and Olympiakos will be looking to keep the pressure for the number two spot up by gaining three points on Wednesday

The standings in group C remain tight. Italian representative Brescia will be playing the first of two key matchups. At home against Marseille, who showed good form and knocked off group leader Barceloneta two weeks ago, the Italians will have the first of two chances to get back in the next round picture. The second game in group C on Wednesday features Spanish champs Barceloneta, already sure of the group's first place, and Serbian number four Vojvodina Novi Sad who will meet in Spain. A daunting task for the Serbs who are in need of points and could see a possible decisive matchup with Brescia on the final group stage day, scheduled for February 27, for fourth place and advancement to the next round.

Miroslav Randic and Marseille are even still in the race for the number two spot in group C squaring off against Brescia on Wednesday

In group D Partizan Belgrade is looking to keep the pressure on the number one spot, currently taken by Hungarian cup winners Szeged. With two games left for both teams, the Magyars can not make any mistakes knowing Partizan will fight hard to add six points starting on Wednesday at home against last placed Wasserfreunde Spandau Berlin from Germany. Both national teams met in Novi Sad, Serbia last week with Serbia cruising to a 13-4 victory. Time for revanche for the German side who accompanies the majority of Germany internationals. And a possible upset in Belgrade would be welcome as it is the tiniest option keep hope of finishing in fourth place. But even in the visitors would get away with a win, they still be needing points on day 10 as well and the matchup on February 27 is possibly tougher: facing Szeged. The Hungarians will play on Wednesday will play on home soil as well as they host Romanian champs CSM Oradea. Their both national teams also met in the World League last week. A strong and nice shooting performance by centre-back Andrei Busila had the Romanians close to an upset all game long but in the end fell just short: 9-8. Multiple players of that game will meet again on Wednesday. For the Romanians any point will secure them of a fourth place finish while Szeged is looking to conclude the group stage with two more wins and group win to get a relatively easier matchup in the next round, ahead of the big quarter-finals.

Will Kalman Kadar and Oradea be able to cause an upset in Belgrade?
