The big games in group D of the Champions League preliminary round had Galatasaray and Partizan as winners. The Turkish champion more or less eliminated German side Spandau by beating the Germans at home 8-11 while Partizan used a superior third quarter to gain a decisive advantage over Romanian champ Oradea for the 6-10 final score. Key factor, next to the tight defense and well playing Partizan goalie Slobodan Soro was youngster Dusan Mandic who scored three goals in the second half from whom the last one was of great importance restoring the four-goal lead right after Mircea Samulia had got Oradea within three off an extra man possession. A strong center goal had Partizan leading 5-9 and virtually sealed the victory. For Spandau, the task is easy. If they want to get to fourth place, points will be needed in the next two final prelims games; against Partizan and Hungarian national cup winners Szeged.

The first result of the eighth game day came from Russia where Russian champion Spartak Volgograd defeated Georgian representative Ligamus Tbilisi 12-6 in group A. Another tense encounter took place in Novi Sad, Serbia where home team Vojvodina got a point against Russian side Sintez Kazan drawing 6-6 with Marco Cuk as game saver. The Serb scored the equalizer with six seconds remaining to keep his team in the race for the next round. The second group C matchup featured a little upset as Marseille defeated the so far unbeaten side of Barceloneta 11-10. The French side led 6-3 at half time but saw that advantage trimmed down by Barceloneta in the third period to 8-7. Marseille managed to hung on the one-goal advantage and ended up victorious. The French now take third place in the group.

No surprises were noted in group A where all favorites gained clear wins. Eger, playing without captain Peter Biros and Canadian lefthander Kevin Graham routed to a 4-13 win over German representative Waspo '98 Hannover while group leader Vouliagmeni used a superior second half, in which the oponent could not score a single goal, on their way to winning 3-15.

Red Star Belgrade looked to cruise to victory in France against Montpellier. Although the home side tried hard, the Serbs struck at the right moments and seemed to be able to find the back of the oponnent's net a lot easier than the hard working French squad. Leading 3-8 at half time, it was the fourth quarter in which Red Star definitely walked away. The score finished at 8-16. Croatian champion Jug recorded a stellar victory beating Swiss side SC Kreuzlingen 5-30 in their international home pool at Winterthur. After leading 0-15 at half time, the Croats devided the score well for the 25-goal difference finish. Jug is now sure of first place in group B still being unbeaten.

Crunch time in Berlin - Champions League day 8 preview

The situations in group C and D of the Champions League preliminary round are getting more and more tense. For the German national champ Wasserfreunde Spandau, it is all or nothing in their game against Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray. With two remaing matches against the group D favorites, nothing less than a win at home on Wednesday is needed in order to stay alive in the race for the fourth spot and advancing to the round of last sixteen. Meanwhile Romanian representative CSM Oradea is fighting for their spot in the next round as well. Facing Serbian national cup finalist Partizan Belgrade, that is not an easy task. Although Partizan-coach Vladimir Vujasinovic will miss his talented centre-back Nikola Dedovic, who is out with a broken nose, both teams have all reason to give it their best in order to finish well in the group, ahead of their possible next round matchup.

Next to leader Barceloneta in group C, the group of contenders fighting for the three remaining spots to advance is still as close as it was. Although Russian representative Sintez Kazan is three points ahead of the rest, the Russians will have to battle hard in order to keep the advantages over its contenders, starting with the matchup against Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia on Wednesday. The Serbs have still three games to go but since one of these is against the Spanish champion and dominating side Barceloneta, the results in the two other games will be crucial. Meanwhile, Marseille has the daunting task in their game against Barceloneta at home. Their meeting in Spain finished with a surrounding 15-4 final score. The French surely will hope to gain a better result in front of their home crowd on Wednesday.

The eighth round results seem a little more predictable in the games played in group A and B. Here all favorite teams face the less successful sides in their group so far with only French champion Montellier as serious contender against Red Star Belgrade at home. The recently crowned Serbian national cup winners will travel to France full of confidence but might face some serious resistance from the current French league leading side.
