Pro Recco is on its way to the Final Four

All three Croatian teams earned a win in the first leg of the Champions League Quarter Finals, but they will face tough return games in Hungary and Montenegro. Recco’s convincing win in Budva should be enough to reach the Final Four.
LEN Office – Pro Recco has taken a significant first step toward the Final Four: the Italians thrashed Budva in Montenegro. The second leg now seems no more than routine. Recco took command right from the beginning and steadily widened the gap: they won all four periods with ease. Dusko Pijetlovic scored four and Felipe Perrone added three as Recco sailed away with a 13-5 win.
The newcomer in the quarters, Szeged, continued its wonder journey in the first half in Zagreb. The Hungarians, fuelled by some magnificent saves by goalie Laszlo Baksa, overcame a handful of man-down situations and were in the lead until half-time (4-5). However, in the following periods they ran out of miracles, and perhaps energy – while Mladost took control. Josip Pavic also made some crucial saves for Mladost. Szeged was thus denied in attack for almost the entire second half and the Croatians hit the net four times in a row. The visitors‘ only goal came with a minute before the end, from a penalty – however this can be crucial as it narrowed their deficit to only two goals (8-6).
The other Croatian-Hungarian showdown brought a more decisive win for the home side, Jug Dubrovnik. Vasas withstood the pressure for a while but the Croats tightened their defence at the beginning of the third period and some great blasts from the distance gave them a four-goal lead (8-4). Vasas came back to 8-6 in the fourth but after losing three key-players through foul trouble (Boskovic, Kiss, Steinmetz) Jug rushed to 12-7, thanks to the hero of the evening, Maro Jokovic, who scored four goals. Vasas pulled one back in the end but Jug’s advantage (12-8) seems large enough.
The third Croatian representative, Primorje Rijeka, won a thriller against Jadran Herceg Novi. The clash was full of twists and turns: the Montenegrins led at half-time and were 4-6 up in the beginning of the third, but within five minutes Rijeka scored three consecutive goals for 7-6. In fact it was just the beginning of a crazy rush: the last 2:45 minutes of this period saw six goals, four of them were scored in 79 seconds. The fireworks favoured the home team as Rijeka led 10-8 before the fourth period and they hit one more for 11-8 with 4:14 to go. But there came Jadran again: after Luka Sekulic’s goal, Vladimir Gojkovic scored two (he and Ivan Kruzmir both netted four apiece) while Rijeka lost its rhythm and were tied with 49 seconds remaining on the clock (11-11). Finally the home side found a goal: Denes Varga buried an extra man situation, 22 seconds before the end and this proved to be the game-winner (12-11). Even so, Jadran may have been the happier side at the end.
The return legs will be played on 18 April (the long break is due to the Olympic Qualification Tournament for National Teams at the beginning of April).
