In the first play-off game for qualification for the 2014 European Championships the men's team of Romania took a first big step towards another participation in a major international tournament. At home in Bucharest playing against Great Britain, coached by former Romanian international Andrei Iosep, the home team recorded a big 18-7 win, led by shooter Nicolai Diaconu who scored six goals. The 11-goal advantage looks to have the Romanians in the driver's seat towards clinching one of six available spots left for the 2014 Budapest tournament. Red-hot favorite Spain made no mistake and posted a seemingly insurmountable advantage by trashing Ukraine 5-17 with Albert Español as top goal scorer with 4. The win was the first for recently appointed new head coach and former Spanish international Gabriel Hernandez. 2012 Olympic champs Croatia also more or less secured their spot in Budapest beating Slovakia at home 8-16. Lefthander Maro Jokovic, returned to the line-up after wrist-surgery, earned top scoring honours with 4 goals. Georgia made the most out of their home-court start as they topped Turkey 8-4 in Tbilisi now holding an important four-goal advantage towards the leg 2 meeting on March 1 in Turkey. In the Antigone pool in Montpellier home team France also made a strong call for a return to Europe's premier stage next summer as they rolled past Malta, who advanced to the play-off round after Macedonia's withdrawal. Alexandra Camerasa led the way for the French side scoring 5 goals.
The last six participants in the men's tournament of the 2014 European Championships are still to be determined. This weekend the first-leg matches of the play-offs are scheduled where the bottom six of the 2012 European Championships are facing one team each from the first-round qualification matches. The biggest matches of the weekend are supposed the to be played today in Tbilisi, Georgia and on Sunday in Utrecht, Netherlands.
A do-or-die situation is coming up in the Dutch city of Utrecht: here the new-look team from Russia wants to get back to the European Championships two years after the knock-out in the previous qualifiers against Spain. But the five-time European Champion of the 1960s and 1980s are facing the Dutch team which had suffered the same fate in 2008 and 2010 and got back the top 12 as hosting nation of the 2012 European Championships.
Observers are also looking forward to the clash between Georgia and Turkey who are facing each other today in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. The players from the Caucasus have visibly improved over the years and now got an intersting draw for the decisive play-off matches. 2012 Olympic Games hosts Great Britain made it to the play-offs for the first time, but the team is facing a much more difficult challenge as they are playing the experienced Romanians. The first leg match is played today in the pretty new Steaua pool in Bucharest, Romania.
In some other fixtures the scenarios are looking much clearer. World's number five Spain is playing underdog Ukraine, including a long journey to Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine this weekend. The reigning Olympic champion Croatia is travelling to Novaky this weekend, a small city in western Slovakia with a marvellous indoor-pool. Afer the recent succes of the women's squad the French men's team is hoping for a comeback as well. The team is facing underdog Malta, playing in Montpeller tonight. The French job was made easier by the drop-out of three-time European Champioships participant Macedonia.

Sandro Bitadze: "We Will Hold the Toughest Match in Turkey"
In Tbilisi, in swimming complex “Olympic”, the Georgian national water polo team defeated Turkey 8:4 in the first play off match of European Championship. The Georgians have advanced 1:0 in two-match series. The second match will take place in Istanbul on March 1. The team with the best result will be declared as a winner. The Georgians can even lose with 3 goals. In case of losing with 4 goals, the teams will play overtime. So, the Georgians have a chance to play at the final stage of European Championship for the first time.
Georgia-Turkey match caused such a great interest that there was no place to sit or stand. The match started with the advantage of the hosts and they scored goal – 1:0. Soon, the guests equalized score by penalty. Then, the hosts advanced again. The Turkish water polo players fought till the end. Goalkeeper Chumburidze played a key role in our victory. At the last minutes of the match referees sent off our veteran and one of the leaders Rezo Chomakhidze. In spite of that, the hosts managed to keep 4-goal advantage and finally, they won 8:4.
“Olympic” was crowded but the support of the fans was not good. Our team will hold the toughest match in Turkey because the Turkish fans are famous for their support and neither “mistakes” of the referees are excluded in favor of the hosts.
After the match “World Sport” talked to Sandro Bitadze, veteran water polo player and vice-president of the Georgian Water Polo Federation:
“Today we had a very tough opponent which has an experience of playing at European Championship. The boys held the toughest match. I want to thank them for winning this match”.
- Are you satisfied with the referees?
- There were mistakes toward the both teams. Overall, I am satisfied.
- Will Chomakhidze miss the next match?
- Chomakhidze will play in Turkey because this sent off does not consider missing the next match.
- What can you say about the next match?
- We will hold the toughest match. In spite of winning with 4 goals, winner of the play off will be found out in Istanbul.
- Will the Georgian fans attend the match in Istanbul?
- As I know, more than 100 fans are going to attend Turkey-Georgia match. Hopefully, their number will increase.
