Teams from four nations will battle in the second round of the Euro Cup qualifications: Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Russia each saw their respective two participants going through.
It was a Hungarian march in Group A, the two local sides, playing in Budapest decided the top spot between each other: Ferencvaros managed to beat Szeged in a thrilling encounter to finish first while the losers came second. Last year’s runner-up, Acquachiara (ITA) also made the next step while Jadran managed to win its most crucial game against Strasbourg (FRA) with ease (13-9) and joined the qualifying sides.
In group B the field was more balanced and a couple of hiccups occurred. Host Mornar (CRO), semi-finalist last season, finally clinched the first place, though earlier they lost to Kirishi (RUS) which later had to settle for the fourth place. Kazan came second, after four straight wins they were defeated by Mornar on the last day, while the third place here also went for the Italian entrant, Canottieri.
This means that the eight teams reaching the second phase will represent four nations. In the next round teams now ranked first and third will form a quartet with the second and fourth placed sides coming from the other group.

FTC, Mornar top groups in Euro Cup first round
With the last matches played Sunday morning a busy Euro Cup opening round week was concluded. The top 4 teams of each group qualified for round 2 and for group A in Budapest these teams were already determined so the final rankings of the group were just to be confirmed Sunday. Strasbourg closed out by beating Primorac 14-10, followed by Szeged holding off Jadran Split 14-9. The final show was for Acquachiara who proved too strong for winless German representative Esslingen: 15-7. And so the hosts FTC topped the group, followed by fellow Hungarians Szeged, Acquachiara and Jadran Split.
In group B, in Split, the teams to advance were also already known by Sunday morning but the final rankings not yet decided. Napoli claimed 3rd place over Kirishi thanks to a 10-8 win in their head to head match-up. Montenegro international Darko Brguljan took off for 5 goals in the victory. Home side Mornar finished on a positive note by beating Sintez Kazan 9-11 and therewith even won the group. The battle between the bottom 2 ranked sides saw Olympic Nice triumphing 6-12 to end their week with the only victory. This means that the eight teams reaching the second phase will represent four nations. In the next round teams now ranked first and third will form a quartet with the second and fourth placed sides coming from the other group.

Euro Cup underway
With the Champions League down to the last qualification round, the Euro Cup participants get their kick-off this week with the one and only qualification round being played in two groups, in Budapest and Split respectively. Here seven and six teams will be playing to qualify for the next round and therefore need to finish with the top 4 in their group after the last matches, on Sunday morning. The losers of the Champions League 3rd qualification round play-off will continue in the Euro Cup and join this week's best 8 sides. Interestingly both Hungarian participants, Szeged and FTC were drawn together in group A, while both Russian representatives will meet in group B, played in Split. In group A last year's finalist and runner-up Acquachiara can be considered one of the favourites to at least make it to the next round while semifinalist in last year's edition, Mornar, will be expecting to advance out of group B. In group A hosts FTC and fellow Hungarians Szeged will also be determined to qualify for the next round. The race for the remaining spots however, especially in group B, is expected to be an open one.Euro Cup 2015-2016
