Szolnok edge OSC, succeed Szeged as Hungarian Cup winners
This weekend the Hungarian water polo scene was focusing on the final 4 of the domestic cup.The contest was held in the new swimming pool and stadium in Szentes. On Friday evening the semi-finals were played to decide the finalists for the gold medal match on Sunday.
Szolnok bested Eger for the 2nd time already this season by edging their rivals by 1 goal in a close 5-6 match.
The other semi-final was much less of a contest as OSC walked over Honvéd with 8-1. This once again showed the gap between the top 3 and the rest of the competition.
By now, OSC and Szolnok have no more secrets for each other. The duel for Champions League qualification in November resulted in a victory for Szolnok, but the difference was very small.
OSC was focused on taking revenge and delivering Szolnok the first domestic defeat of this season.
The current number 2 of the ranking started strong and took a 2-0 lead. Szolnok looked sloppy and disorganised and head coach Sándor Cseh needed a timeout to get all heads cleared and focused again. After the timeout the league leaders were more structured in defense and it was only a matter of time for the offence to start producing goals.
The teams exchanged goals as the score stayed close until the final period arrived with a 4-5 score in favour of Szolnok.
With 2 consecutive goals by Gábor Kis, Szolnok started an offensive too powerful for OSC to deal with.
Serbian internationals Milan Aleksic and Stefan Mitrovic added another 2 goals and OSC looked beat at a 5-9 score with 3 minutes to go. The final minutes of the game did not change the outcome anymore as Szolnok professionally played out the remaining time (7-10).
After the 3-year run of Szeged, Hungary has a new domestic cup winner with Szolnok. This is the first prize for Szolnok of the season and looking at how the team has developed and progressed since the beginning of the season, 14/15 might very well turn out to be Szolnok’s year.
