2014 Deutschland Cup Düsseldorf, Germany

Hungary wins Deutschland Cup

|Sunday 06 July 2014, 16:15|Tim Hartog

In one of the final tests ahead of the 2014 European Championships at home in Budapest Hungary have won the 2014 Deutschland Cup in Düsseldorf, Germany after edging USA 12-11 in the first of two matches on Sunday morning. The Americans started off more focussed and established a 1-3 lead at quarter-time before Hungary responded in the second term and slowly but surely took control. Montenegro held off hosts Germany 5-7 in the four-nation tournament's final match. A quiet match in which Montenegro, although sloppy, proved superior, mainly thanks to returned captain Nikola Janovic who instructed his team-mates on the right moments while taking matters into his own hands when needed the most. The elder of the Janovic brothers finished with three goals as top scorer for the world's number 2 as they finished second to Hungary in this Euro 2014 preparation tournament. Team USA took third place and will continue their preparation for the FINA World Cup, to be played in Almaty, Kazakhstan in August while the other three teams present in western Germany will head into their final week before the main tournament of this year will be kicked off on Monday 14 July.

Deutschland Cup final test before Budapest

|Wednesday 02 July 2014, 15:30|Tim Hartog
Two tournaments headline the final phase of the men's preparation for the upcoming 2014 European Championships in Budapest, starting Monday 14 July. While teams from Italy, Spain, Croatia, Serbia and Greece will battle for the Samartzidis Cup in Greece, four others gather in the western German city of Düsseldorf this weekend for the Deutschland Cup. And with Hungary and Montenegro present, the finalists of last year's World Championships in Barcelona are to be seen when finalising preparations for what should be the highlight of their respective international seasons. Also present are the teams from USA, gearing up for the FINA World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in August, and hosts Germany, who finished 5th at the 2012 edition of the European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands but had to settle for 11th place in Barcelona last year.

The Hungarians will play the tournament with their final team for Budapest already known while Montenegro head coach Ranko Perovic is dealing with injury questions of centre-forward Sasa Misic and goal keeper Milos Scepanovic, both fighting to be recovered in time to even play the European Championships. Perovic is expected to welcome back captain Nikola Janovic who joins the team after a break from the national team while team top scorer at last year's World Championships, Aleksandar Ivovic, will make his return after being rested to prevent injuries during the recent World League Super Final tournament in Dubai. A team of 15 players will travel to western Germany where coach Perovic can select his final squad also based on the play of his squad during the weekend. Hosts Germany will be present with a 16-man squad for a final test before head coach Nebojsa Novoselac will select his final squad ahead of travelling to Budapest.
