USA women win Kirishi Cup

| Saturday 05 July 2014, 17:04 | Tim Hartog

The USA women have won the 2014 Kirishi Cup, thanks to a 5-6 win over the Netherlands on Saturday. The Americans stayed undefeated throughout five days of competition in Russia only drawing level with Spain on Friday 7-7. In their final match the Adam Krikorian coached side established a nice 2-6 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Dutch women rallied back to 5-6. In the remaining fourty seconds however, neither squad could score so the 5-6 victory for Team USA became definite. Earlier on Saturday Hungary took second place by beating Spain 8-10 after trailing 3-1 at quarter-time. Russia claimed third place holding off Italy in a high-scoring contest 15-12 in the tournament's final match. The back-and-forth encounter saw Russia scoring seven goals in the third period before Italy finished strong by scoring four unanswered goals in the final term only to find out the deficit was too large to overcome. The European sides will now mostly announce their final rosters for the upcoming 2014 European Championships in Budapest, to start on Monday 14 July, although hosts Hungary already travelled to western Russia with their final team for Euro 2014.

Plenty of close games were to be seen in Kirishi, Russia on Friday. The day started with USA who were held to a draw after three straight previous wins as Spain looked well underway to beat the Americans before three goals in the final period got them back to a 7-7 final score. USA's balanced attack was displayed in the seven different goal scorers while Spain's centre-forwards Andrea Blas and Maica Garcia netted 2 each for the Spanish side. The Netherlands gained their first win of the tournament as a goal by Marloes Nijhuis on man-up with just 2 seconds remaining gave the Dutch an 8-9 victory over reigning European champs 8-9.
