Spartak Volgograd and Mladost Zagreb in Euro Cup final

Two Italian teams reached the Euro Cup semi-finals. Neither one managed to get to fight for the trophy. Spartak Volgograd was this year's first Euro Cup finalist. In the semi-final second leg hosting Acquachiara on Wednesday the Russian side held on to its two-goal lead out of game 1 so that the 9-10 loss proved enough to secure the spot in the final. A tough encounter saw both sides being tied at quarter time 3-3 before the Italians took a slim lead at the break: 5-6. But Spartak was not to be surprised and struck back in the third term. The 3-1 run turned the score around from 5-6 to 8-7 and created a daunting task for Acquachiara with eight minutes to go. Their comeback did occure but was simply not enough. The home side knew its position and survived losing the game 9-10 but the 21-20 aggregate got the Russian champs into the final where Mladost Zagreb will be the opponent. 

The Croats, LEN Trophy winners in 2001 but also joint-record 7-time Euro League victors, eliminated 3-time Euro League champion Posillipo by nicely winning leg 2 in Naples, Italy 7-10 after a close game. Both sides came into the game tied 8-8 after leg 1. Posillipo trailed Mladost most of the time but came back to just a single-goal difference on two occasion after the break at 5-6 and 6-7 before the Vjekoslav Kobescak coached side, sparked by Olympic champion goalie Josip Pavic and top scorer Duje Zivkovic' three goals, ran away for good only to have reached the final score with still five minutes to play. The two-leg finals will be played on March 26 and April 9.

This year's Euro Cup finalists are far from determined with just both semi-finals return legs still to be played. In Naples, Italy home side Posillipo enjoys a seemingly homecourt advantage in their match-up with Croatian nummer three Mladost after both teams were tied 8-8 after leg 1 two weeks ago. Fellow Italians and Naples based side Acquachiara will face the daunting task of making up for a two-goal loss to Russian champs Spartak Volgograd at home in the teams first meeting. This game will be live webcasted on the Spartak Volgograd website.
