Day 3 of action in the men's World League Europe prelims was opened with a potential interesting match-up in group A as Russia hosted reigning champs Serbia. The up-and-coming Russians, where recently appointed Erkin Shagaev kicked off his new job as national team head coach, were unable to endanger Serbia. Led by Andrija Prlainovic and Stefan Mitrovic, who scored a total of three goals each, the Serbs walked away in a high-scoring 2nd quarter after both sides were tied 1-1 after eight minutes of play, and looked very much in control from there. Goals by Mitrovic and newcomer Sava Randjelovic in the final quarter ensured a second win and the top spot in group A for Serbia. The big match-up of day 3 saw Croatia and Hungary staying close all game until the home side looked to decide things in the fourth quarter by scoring two straight goals (Andro Buslje and Niksa Dobud). Leading 6-4 Croatia seemed favorite to take the three points but Hungary standout Marton Vamos, after having levelled the sides 4-4 earlier in the game, scored the consolation goal and Denes Varga off a feed from brother Daniel scored the 6-6 equalizer in the dying seconds so that penalties had to determine a winner. After both sides had missed their first 2 attempts a pair of penalty shots were hit by Croatia's Kristijan Milakovic and veteran Marton Szivós for Hungary. Centre forward Niksa Dobud saw his attempt saved by Hungary goalie Viktor Nagy, followed by Daniel Varga (pictured) scoring the 7-8 for Hungary and after youngster Ante Viskovic also missed his penalty the Hungarians completed their comeback and won 7-8 to now lead group B gaining 5 points in two games. Meanwhile in group A Montenegro took a 13-10 win over Germany from Herceg Novi but that went on not be quite as easy as expected. The Germans, responsible for the biggest upset of the 2009 World Championships eliminating the then reiging European champs in the quarter-finals, on Tuesday came all the way back from being down 6-1 (3 goals by Aleksandar Ivovic) to set up a tense second half of the game. Ultimately though the Montenegrins were able to step up a level and with three goals from Aleksandar Radovic in the 4th quarter, ended up victorious after all. The final match of the day saw Italy posting their second win of this campaign by beating Slovakia 12-5 at home in the city of Bergamo. Led by centre forward Matteo Aicardi's four goals the Italians started walking away in the second period and were to be stopped. The 2011 World Champs still hold 2nd place in group C while Slovakia still seeks their first points and are set to host Montenegro on day 4 at home in Novaky.

Croatia-Hungary match highlights World League day 3

The third matchday in the European preliminary phase of this year's World League will be shaping the three groups for the first time as in both group A and B the top teams will meet for the first time. Reigning champs Serbia travelled to Kazan, Russia taking on the home team who started off their campaign by rolling past Romania 15-5 on day 1. Serbia hosted the Romanians on day 2 and recorded a big 18-6 win also. But this round of play will be highlighted by the match between Croatia and Hungary, to be played in the Adriaric cost town of Sibenik. A re-match of the 2013 World Championships semi-final, won by Hungary who went on to capture the gold medal while Croatia finished 3rd. The Croatians, who won the World League in 2012 ahead of their Olympic triumph in London, are coming off a penalty shootout loss (11-12) to Greece on day 2 while Hungary held off the Greek 8-5 on opening day. And where Hungary presents the same squad as the one who ended up victorious in Barcelona last August, the Croatians will be missing lefthander Maro Jokovic who is recovering from surgery on his right hand and is expected to miss out on action in the month of January. But apart from that the Croatian team has undergone quite some changes compared to Barcelona 2013 with youngsters back-up goalkeeper Ivan Marcelić, lefthander Ante Visković, Ante Vukičević and Antonio Buha all on the roster now. Well-known at home but up-and-coming on senior international level. The squad for Tuesday's game though still includes 10 Barcelona World Championships bronze medal winners and 10 London Olympic champions.

For both Motnenegro and Italy the match-ups on day 3 are to confirm their favorite status and gain a first big advantage, in particular for the Montenegrins who defeated Italy at home in Kotor 11-8 on day 2 and can take a comfortable lead by beating Germany, also at home but this time in the city of Herceg Novi. It does not stop Montenegro head coach Ranko Perovic from trying to roulate and rejuvanate as both young players centre forward Nikola Murišić (Primorac Kotor) and striker Jovan Sarić (Jadran Herceg Novi) will be debuting in the senior national team on Tuesday. Meanwhile the Montenegrins will be playing without the Galatasaray duo of goalie Milos Šćepanović and driver Aleksandar Pasković which clears the path for Radnicki veteran goalkeeper Zdravko Radic to make his return to the national squad. Latest changes were reported on Monday as Mladjan Janovic has obligations to his club Pro Recco and can not be present, so Perovic called up veteran centre back Predrag Jokić instead. Also centre forward Sasa Misic' presents remains uncertain as he is dealing with shoulder problems and is a game time decision.

New names are also to be seen in Italy as they take on Slovakia on Tuesday. Head coach Alessandro Campagna is trying to get more players involved and this time called up Luca Damonte (Carisa Savona), Vincenzo Dolce and Vincenzo Renzuto Iodice (DOOA Posillipo) and U18 Perth 2012 world champion Tommaso Busilacchi (Como Nuoto) for an opportunity to showcase their talent on senior international level. Slovakia, led by Szeged centre forward Lukáš Seman, are coming off a tough 10-9 loss to Germany on day 2 and are still seeking the first points of this campaign.

World League, l'Italia batte la Slovacchia 12-5

Ernesto Zerella - 14 gennaio 2014 22:19

Italia: Del Lungo, Renzuto Iodice, Nicholas Presciutti 1, Figlioli 2 (1 rig.), Fondelli 1, Coppoli, Giacoppo, Nora 3, Di Fulvio 1, Damonte, Aicardi (C) 4, Bianco, Vassallo. All. Campagna.
Slovacchia: Kozmer, Famera 3 (1 rig.), Zatovic, Hrosik (C), Durik 1, Janicek, Seman 1, Tkac, Bielik, Gyurcsi, Kratochvil, Bruder, Hoferica. All. Sirotny.
Arbitri: Putnikovic (Srb) e Savinovic (Cro).
Delegato: Gianni Lonzi (Ita).
Note: parziali 1-1, 3-1, 4-2, 4-1. Nessuno uscito per limite di falli. Superiorità numeriche: Italia 3/6 + un rigore, Slovacchia 2/3 + un rigore. Hoferica (S) in porta nel quarto tempo. In tribuna Busilacchi, Dolce, Valentino. Spettatori: 1200 circa.
