In the second match-up in group B on Wednesday Partizan gained a useful 7-10 win in Istanbul, Turkey topping fellow third place contenders Galatasaray. Despite playing without regular started Nikola Dedovic Partizan walked away in the third period after already leading 3-5 at half-time. Top shooter Milos Cuk (3 goals) led the way as the Serbs opened up the second half scoring 2 consecutive goals for the 3-7 score. Although Galatasaray centre forward Slobodan Nikic shot one home on man-up in the following possession the home side was unable to avoid another defeat.
One of the highlights of the night came from Sori, Italy where in a 2012 final re-match Primorje gained a big 6-8 win over Pro Recco to now join the group of three teams posting 7 points after 4 matches in group A. Two goals by recently voted 2013 FINA World Player of the Year Denes Varga (pictured) in the 3rd quarter proved vital as Recco wasted two good man-up opportunities in a scoreless final period and Primorje hung on for the two-goal victory. With Varga netting the pair in the third term the close game turned around from Recco as leading side in the first half to Primorje more or less taking control in the second as they led by two goals twice thanks to Varga including what turned out to be the final score at 6-8 after the reigning world champion shot home his third goal of the game from the deep left corner. Fellow Hungarian veteran Norbert Madaras, who started off the game in sensational fashion with two assists on man-up to Aleksandar Ivovic (4 goals!) and Federico Lapenna in the first quarter, saw his shot on man-up in the 4th quarter blocked by Primorje goalkeeper Frano Vican and could not hold on to a Maurizio Felugo pass with 35 seconds remaining as Primorje run out the game clock and celebrated the win.

Eger vs. Olympiacos game report
With all the festivities behind us it’s time to get serious again, very serious. No time is wasted in getting rid of the holiday spirit and focus on competition again. Barely finished with the New Years left overs it’s time for the 4th day of the Champions League Preliminary round.
Both Eger and Olympiacos failed to collect any points so far and share last place in group A. Although hope is not lost yet, both teams faced 3 defeats already and will have to turn things around if they still value their Champions League campaign. Especially Eger, who is playing in front of their home crowd, will not want to disappoint the fans again. Olympiacos will try everything to break their own dry spell though and take the points to Greece.
1st Period (3-2)
With the stakes of this game in the back of their mind, both teams start careful trying to avoid conceding an early goal. The first exclusion of the day, after 3 slow minutes, allows Eger to break the game open. Salamon Ferenc confirms his status as sharpshooter with a precise shot, out of reach of Olympiakos goalie Galandis. With the deadlock broken the home team takes the initiative. Canadian international Kevin Graham immediately doubles the lead with a long range shot, right on the 30 second buzzer. Not long after, Georgios Ntoskas opens the Greek’s account after an exclusion on Eger’s side. Another goal on both ends brings the score to 3-2 after the 8 minutes have passed. Salamon noted down his second of the game and Blai Mallarach replied on behalf of the visitors.
2nd Period (3-2)
Immediately from the sprint Eger continues to pressure the Olympiacos goal. A pinpoint pass to Balazs Harai and the 4-2 is on the board. With a mighty backhand shot from the center position he leaves Galandis without a chance. The Greek are not planning to give in without a fight though. The return attack leads to exclusion for Eger and Alexandros Gounas scores from left wing position. At the 4 minute mark a second goal of Mallarach brings the score to 4-4 and it’s all square again. The visitors are growing into the game and are aiming to overtake the initiative. Eger captain and veteran Peter Biros, who returns from an injury, recognizes the danger and shows what is expected of a captain in dire moments. A precise long range shot in the far corner brings his team back in the lead. When youngster Balint Lorincz cashes in on an Olympiacos exclusion, the lead grows to 2 goals. Great goalkeeping of David Bisztritsányi keeps the halfway score at 6-4. He denies Evangelos Delekas a close range man-up attempt with a massive block and the home crowd can catch their breath again.
3rd Period (3-2)
Eger continues where it left off at half time. A foul on Harai leaves the referees no choice but to give a penalty shot. Biros knows a bargain when he sees one and signs for his second goal of the game. Olympiacos is struggling to find space in the Eger defense and a shot from man-up finds the post. The rebound lands with Ntoskas though who catches Bisztritsányi off guard with a shot over the defending block. Luck seems to be on the home side this evening when a powerful shot of Salamon slams in from the inside of the post and restores the 3 goal difference. Olympiacos’ offense then continues to test Bisztritsányi with another sneaky shot of Mallarach that goes in off the goalie’s hand. An exclusion at their defensive end leaves the Greeks exposed though, and Bence Batori, who had been very quiet until then, set the visitors back on the 3 goal trail.
4th Period (3-5)
Kevin Graham takes his 4th competition sprint win of the day and Eger look to be in total control. Ntoskas is not giving up though and brings the gap back to 2. With 3 goals from 3 shots he has been most effective in offense today. Unfortunately for Ntoskas, his defense continues to drop gaps and Batori finds the right bottom corner. Multiple goals then follow in very quick succession. In not much more than 2 minutes, the score takes a jump from 10-7 to 12-9. Olympiakos keeps trying to get closer, but Eger is standing ground. With just over a minute on the clock, the visitors set up a final assault to breach the Hungarian’s defense. Christodoulos Kolomvos scores from center position and brings his team in the double figures. A rare mistake from Bisztritsányi on a shot from Fountoulis then minimizes the difference between the two teams again for the first time since the first period. As there are only 35 seconds left to play, the ball slips under his arm and drifts into the goal, 12-11.
The home crowd holds their breath while watching the clock count down second for second as Eger starts, supposedly, the last possession of the game. Quick anticipation from Angelos Vlachopoulos makes the Eger hearts jump over though as he steals the ball and finds a teammate on offence. Another quick pass puts Fountoulis one on one with Bisztritsányi and an ultimate chance for a late dramatic equalizer. All eyes close for a second as tension gets too much and Olympiacos’ number 5 takes the shot. After opening their eyes, the crowd sees Fountoulis in despair and Bisztritsányi triumphant with the ball in his hands. With his final effort he managed to block the shot and secure the first Champions League win for Eger in the 2013/2014 campaign.
Thanks to the victory Eger keep hope on reaching the Final Six alive. Olympiakos role seems to run aground though as they are now trailing 7 points on 3rd place, required for Final Six qualification.

Després d'empatar contra el Pro Recco en la tercera jornada, el Club Natació Atlètic - Barceloneta confia a sumar els tres punts davant el Jug Croàcia. L'equip de Dubrovnik és líder conjuntament amb els mariners i els italians. El Jug és un equip amb un gran palmarès ja que ha aconseguit, entre d'altres, 11 lligues croates i tres copes d'Europa.

Barceloneta: victoria y liderato ante el Jug (RFEN)
08/01/2014 - El CN Atlètic—Barceloneta ha sumado su tercera victoria de la temporada en Champions ante el Jug Dubrovnik (9—8) y se sitúa como nuevo líder en solitario del grupo A tras la derrota del Pro Recco ante el Primorje Rijeka. Los de Chus Martín siguen intratables en su piscina, en la que todavía no conocen la derrota.
Duelo por el liderato y nuevo choque de máxima exigencia para el CN Atlètic-Barceloneta en la piscina de Sant Sebastià, que ha vuelto a exhibir un llenazo en esta cuarta jornada de Champions ante uno de los totems del Grupo A, el Jug. Todos ellos han rendido un sentido homenaje a Vicent Monsonís, socio y técnico del conjunto marinero fallecido a los 90 años de edad el pasado 24 de diciembre.
De vuelta a la acción, los croatas han arrancado el choque logrando dos ventajas parciales gracias a dos tantos en superioridad, neutralizados pronto por los locales, que han anotado Balasz Sziranyi y Nemanja Ubovic. En el segundo cuarto, el conjunto de Chus Martín se ha puesto por primera vez al mando del electrónico, gracias a dos tantos consecutivos de Chalo Echenique, que han situado el 4-3. Albert Español ha redondeado el parcial con la primera de sus dianas a 56" del intermedio, que ha llegado, pues, con la máxima renta española (5-3).

El tercer cuarto ha sido clave en el devenir del choque. Algunas discutidas decisiones de uno de los colegiados han generado dos superioridades certificadas por el Jug en forma de la igualada a seis goles hacia el ecuador de este tercer parcial. Pero el Barceloneta no ha tardado en reaccionar, y Nemanja Ubovic ha devuelto la tranquilidad a la grada con su segunda diana de la tarde (7-6). En la siguiente acción marinera, Albert Español ha errado un lanzamiento de cinco metros, aunque ha enmendado su error poco después para llevar al último descanso un todavía incierto 8-7.
En los ocho minutos definitivos, el Barceloneta se ha adelantado gracias a un balsámico tanto de Chalo Echenique, su tercero del día. Dani Pinedo y la defensa han sostenido esta renta hasta el último minuto, en el que Pavo Markovic ha devuelto a la pelea por la victoria o el empate a los croatas. Al final, y a diferencia de lo que ocurrió ante el Pro Recco, el cuadro de Chus Martín ha logrado atar el 9-8 y anotarse los tres puntos ante un rival directo de grupo, que encaja aquí su primera derrota.
El CN Atlètic-Barceloneta se eleva al liderato del Grupo A, con 10 puntos, gracias a la derrota del Pro Recco en Rijeka, y persiste como único equipo invicto. Su próximo reto serán los dos partidos ante el Olympiacos de Blai Mallarach, que hoy ha caído ante el ZF Eger, y que ocupa el farolillo rojo del grupo. El primero de estos compromisos queda fijado en Grecia para el próximo 29 de enero.

El CN Atlètic - Barceloneta ha aconseguit una victòria històrica davant el Jug de Croàcia (9-8) en la quarta jornada de la fase preliminar de la Lliga de Campions. L'equip de Chus Martín ha basat la victòria en la velocitat i resistència, sobretot en les transicions.
Amb aquesta victòria, l’Atlètic-Barceloneta torna a ser líder del seu grup. La victòria també ha servit per retre homenatge a l’extrenador i soci del club Vicent Monsonís Peris, “Monso”, que va morir el 24 de desembre als 90 anys

In a must-win situation ZF-Eger battled their way to a 12-11 victory over fellow first-point-seekers Olympiacos in the Champions League preliminary round 4th matchday on Wednesday. The Greek visitors came close in a better final phase of the game but the consolation goal by Ioannis Fountoulis came too late although Fountoulis could not finish off a counter attack thanks to a great save by Eger goalie Bisztritsányi with just seconds remaining as Eger posted their first win of this campaign. Returned captain Biros contributed two goals to the win but saw teammate shooter Ferenc Salamon hitting a triple. Meanwhile in Barcelona Final Six hosts Barceloneta continued their sensational run by holding off Jug 9-8 in a tense showdown. The home side led most of the way but saw Jug remaining close throughout. After Pavo Markovic' counter goal to make it 9-8 with 1.03 left the fans knew they were in for a tense final phase. Jug got one major opportunity via a counter attack with just 20 seconds remaining but Barceloneta standout left-hander Gonzalo Echenique was there to intercept the pass from Jug goalie Marko Bijac to a cutting Miho Boskovic as the Spanish squad could run out the clock and celebrate another nice win to consolidate their leading position in group A while Jug suffered their first loss of this preliminary round. Fellow leaders in group B Brescia escaped in Berlin, Germany. Hosts Spandau came out strong as they went on lead 4-1 and still held a seemingly comfortable 6-3 advantage at half-time. But then the Italians caught fire and turned around the game completely thanks to a superior third quarter in which they scored six goals (3-6). And with another 3 in the final period Brescia went on to win 10-12 and remain unbeaten so far.

An exclusion at their defensive end leaves the Greeks exposed though, and Bence Batori, who had been very quiet until then, set the visitors back on the 3 goal trail.
4th Period (3-5)
Kevin Graham takes his 4th competition sprint win of the day and Eger look to be in total control. Ntoskas is not giving up though and brings the gap back to 2. With 3 goals from 3 shots he has been most effective in offense today. Unfortunately for Ntoskas, his defense continues to drop gaps and Batori finds the right bottom corner. Multiple goals then follow in very quick succession. In not much more than 2 minutes, the score takes a jump from 10-7 to 12-9. Olympiakos keeps trying to get closer, but Eger is standing ground. With just over a minute on the clock, the visitors set up a final assault to breach the Hungarian’s defense. Christodoulos Kolomvos scores from center position and brings his team in the double figures. A rare mistake from Bisztritsányi on a shot from Fountoulis then minimizes the difference between the two teams again for the first time since the first period. As there are only 35 seconds left to play, the ball slips under his arm and drifts into the goal, 12-11.
The home crowd holds their breath while watching the clock count down second for second as Eger starts, supposedly, the last possession of the game. Quick anticipation from Angelos Vlachopoulos makes the Eger hearts jump over though as he steals the ball and finds a teammate on offence. Another quick pass puts Fountoulis one on one with Bisztritsányi and an ultimate chance for a late dramatic equalizer. All eyes close for a second as tension gets too much and Olympiacos’ number 5 takes the shot. After opening their eyes, the crowd sees Fountoulis in despair and Bisztritsányi triumphant with the ball in his hands. With his final effort he managed to block the shot and secure the first Champions League win for Eger in the 2013/2014 campaign.
Thanks to the victory Eger keep hope on reaching the Final Six alive. Olympiakos role seems to run aground though as they are now trailing 7 points on 3rd place, required for Final Six qualification.

07/01/2014 - El CN Atlètic—Barceloneta se mide mañana miércoles a las 19:15h (en directo por Teledeporte) al poderoso Jug en choque correspondiente a la cuarta jornada de la fase preliminar de la Liga de Campeones, penúltima de la primera vuelta. Ambos equipos igualan a siete puntos con el Pro Recco en la primera plaza del grupo A.
La Liga de Campeones se acerca al ecuador de su fase regular, y para el Barceloneta lo hace en un momento crucial. Los de Chus Martín afrontan mañana su tercer encuentro en casa de esta ronda con la obligatoriedad de seguir su racha como locales, donde todavía no conocen la derrota. Sant Sebastià ha contenido a Primorje (8-7) y Pro Recco (10-10), dos referencias que los croatas reconocen tomar a modo de aviso de cara al compromiso de mañana.
El conjunto croata es tercero de grupo con el mismo balance de que el Barceloneta: 7 puntos, correspondientes a los triunfos en casa con Olympiacos (11-9) y ZF Eger (16-11), y el empate en Rijeka ante sus vecinos del Primorje (9-9). Son los más goleadores del grupo, con 36 dianas (Miho Boskovic, con 8 dianas, es su máximo realizador), y se miden a la mejor defensa del grupo, la marinera, que sólo ha encajado 22 tantos.
El Jug ocupa la segunda plaza en la Liga Adriática y viene de caer recientemente en la Copa de Croacia ante el Primorje por 13-11, en un encuentro celebrado el pasado 22 de diciembre.
El Barceloneta-Jug echará a andar mañana miércoles a las 19:15h (en directo por Teledeporte), y estará arbitrado por el ruso Vasily Tkachenko y el turco Haldun Toygarli. El germano Niculae Firoiu ejercerá de delegado LEN.
A nivel arbitral, España estará ampliamente representada en esta jornada de Champions: en el Grupo A, Oriol Jaumandreu viajará a hungría para dirigir el ZF Eger-Olympiacos, y Joan Carles Colominas estará en el destacado Pro Recco-Primorje. Por último, en el Grupo B, Sergio Borrell se desplaza a Turquía para pitar el Galatasaray-Partizan.

Critical phase awaits as Champions League continues

With most of the domestic leagues in Europe yet to re-start with the first matches in 2014 the Champions League will continue with the 4th matchday on Wednesday already. And after a short winter break this round of action is surely not to be considered every type of warm up. In both groups several critical match-ups are scheduled in the race for the 2 (group A) or 3 (group B) spots for the Final Six tournament available. In group A both pointless sides, ZF-Eger and Olympiacos Piraeus, will square off in Hungary; a pivotal game for ZF-Eger who needs to collect points in front of the home crowd in the second half of the season in order to keep any hope of catching up with the first three teams alive. The visitors though are hungary for points as well. The Greek powerhouse already showed to be a potential serious contender in the group making the opponent's lives difficult for three quarters in all past three games but fell short on all occasions. The biggest match-up of the day though will be played in Italy where Pro Recco takes on Primorje; a rematch of the final in 2012, won by the Italians 8-11 in Oradea, Romania. Both teams have slightly changed since but are still considered the top 2 title contenders in this season. Like against Jug Dubrovnik this game for Croatian striker Sandro Sukno means facing another former employer after winning the 2012 then Euro League title with the Italian champion. The third game in this group features Final Six hosts Barceloneta, who surprised by remaining unbeaten so far, hosting Jug Dubrovnik. Both teams participated in last year's Final Four in Belgrade where Jug fell to Crvena zvezda in the final while Barceloneta claimed the bronze medal. In the current standings both teams are locked at 7 points so could make a usefull step by winning.
The situation in group B looks rather different compared to group A. Here both favorites Brescia and Radnicki have confirmed their Final Six contention status and lead the way after three rounds. Both will be looking to add three more points to their total as Brescia travels to Berlin, Germany to take on Spandau while Radnicki hosts Romanian champion CSM Oradea. The four points Spandau claimed so far could be satisfying but means the advantage over the three teams below them is relatively small. In fact, Partizan is just a single point behind and with welcoming a red-hot Brescia side on Wednesday, no easy task is lying ahead. For the record holding 7-time European champion facing Galatasaray in Istanbul means not much of an easier task. Both teams could very well use a win and the three points as the Turks are in a current 5th place with just a draw with Spandau on day 2 breaking a possible losing streak. For Serbian centre forward Slobodan Nikic, who leads the Galatasaray offence, another meeting with multiple countrymen, this time the younger version compared to Radnicki with 19-year old left-hander Dusan Mandic as main target. Following the World League match-up between Serbia and Romania the Champions League meeting between Radnicki and Oradea will see many familiair faces again as both teams provide the most internationals to the respective national sides. For the Romanian champion the game is a tough one. No points were won so far and Radnicki is recently showing why they are confirmed as major candidate to upset both Pro Recco and Primorje's hopes for the title this year. Due to the holidays, with Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, the Serbs had requested to postpone the game to Saturday and were eventually granted.
