Romania no match for defending champs

www.waterpoloworld.com| Tuesday 10 December 2013, 18:18 | Tim Hartog

The first match for Serbia in a new World League campaign, once again in the role of defending champions, proved to be a warm up. Romania was unable to endanger the Serbs on Tuesday in Belgrade as the Dejan Savic coached side ran away to an 18-6 victory in the group A match-up. Struggling on man-up (2/11) and not enough outside fire power (6/26) held the Romanians, anticipating the arrival of new head coach, and former assistant of the Serbian national team Dejan Stanojevic, to scoring just six goals while Serbia proved not to be stopped in finding the back of the Romanian net. Centre forwards Nemanja Ubovic, selected in absence of Dusko Pijetlovic who had to fulfill duties for his Russian employer Sintez Kazan, and Slobodan Nikic combined for 6 goals, while the variety of outside shots coming from the hands of Andrija Prlainovic, Filip Filipovic, Milan Aleksic, Stefan Mitrovic (pictured) and Dusan Mandic proved too much for both Romanian goalies. Sava Randjelovic celebrated his debut for the national team by scoring once. The Serbian team will travel to Russia on day 3 (14 January, 2014) of the preliminary round to face a team that defeated Romania 15-5 on opening day. In Kotor, Montenegro the home team made an important step towards Super Final qualification out of group C by beating Italy 11-8 in the top match of day 2. Montenegro proved superior, almost dominant, for most of the match led by Canottieri Napoli-player Darko Brguljan who scored four goals. The 2013 world championships runners-up ran away to a 3-1 lead and saw a young Italy side being unable to turn things around. Croatia was upset by Greece who walked away from Zagreb with an 11-12 win after a long penalty shootout, eventually decided by Petar Muslim's miss for Croatia. Angelos Vlachopoulos scored his second goal of the game with just 0.4 seconds remaining to level the game at 7-7 and force a shootout. Both sides 'exchanged' multiple misses and saves before Petar Muslim, who had contributed two goals in regulation and netted his previous attempt failed to convert on the 14th penalty of the tense series. Germany took the first win of the campaign at home in Hamburg upsetting newcomer Slovakia who led 7-9 with 3.54 to go but eventually fell short 10-9, when the local heroes still scored three unanswered goals. The match was played at the new Wilhelmsburg pool which had been built for the demands of water polo.

Favorites to clash in group C

www.waterpoloworld.com| Monday 09 December 2013, 13:33 | Tim Hartog

The stage in Kotor, Montenegro is set for an important meeting between Montenegro and Italy in the World League Europe prelims 2nd matchday, to be played on Tuesday. Both sides are considered favorites for the top spot and thus qualification for the Super Final in Dubai and winning Tuesday's match-up could make a difference. Although a rematch of the 2013 Barcelona World Championships semi-final both teams present (slightly) different rosters. Montenegro head coach Ranko Perovic has called up Mlađan Janović, Alexander Ivović, Uros Čučković, Dragan Draskovic and Luke Sekulic who all were absent in the first World League game but misses the experienced trio of Nikola Janovic, centre back Predrag Jokic and goalie Zdravko Radic. The last two were anticipated not to play World League this season, the elder of the Janovic brothers is considering his commitment to the national team, and reportedly even to playing water polo at all, although coach Perovic last Friday stated he still has hopes that the current Jug-player will decide for a comeback/continuation. Italy head coach Alessandro Campagna though doesn't change his route too much. He is still trying to rejuvenate the quality-squad which now includes 6 Pro Recco and 5 Brescia players. Young guns such as CC Napoli's Alessandro Velotto and Savona's Giovanni Bianco are there (again) to show Campagna what they're capable of. Strikingly absent in the Italy squad are veteran Maurizio Felugo and Christian Presciutti who got the year off from coach Campagna as Felugo will become a dad soon and Presciutti recently celebrated the birth of his second daughter. Both can concentrate on that, recharge the battery and are expected to return to the international stage next season. In other games defending champion Serbia will kick off action in this year's campaign hosting Romania in Belgrade while Croatia takes on Greece who fell to Hungary on day 1. Both losers of opening day in group C, Germany and Slovakia, face each other in search of this campaign's first points in Hamburg, Germany.
