Crvena Zvezda wins Super Cup (LEN)

In the all-Serbian clash Crvena Zvezda took the upper hand against Radnicki Kragujevac in the men’s Super Cup final held in Becej (SRB).

More than a decade ago this pool saw fantastic international water polo matches: that time VK Becej played a leading role in the continent, won the Champions League back in 2000. The club ceased to operate on top level – so staging ...
the European Super Cup final in Becej was a kind of salute to the memory of a great water polo club.

The protagonists are worthy successors of Becej as the final was contested by two Serbian sides, Champions League winner Crvena Zvezda and Euro Cup title-holder Radnicki Kragujevac. And they were up to the task in the pool providing a truly magnificent encounter.

Radnicki took a perfect start and gained a 2-0 and a bit later a 3-1 lead. Zvezda pulled one back before the first break – and started to roll early in the second period. They scored three more consecutive goals and went 5-3 up while Djordje Filipovic missed a penalty. Radnicki managed to halt their rival’s march at 5-4 but Zvezda was still ahead at half-time (6-5).

The second half saw the same pattern: the Belgrade based team (Zvezda) got a two-goal advantage, Radnicki managed to answer it and trailed by only one – but could never level the score. At 9-8 Radnicki got the last 6 on 5 with 38 seconds to go but they failed to convert it so Zvezda could celebrate another big win.

At the victory ceremony Serbia’s new Minister of Sports, Vanja Udovicic handed over the trophy for the victorious side. In fact it was a very special moment as the former great of Serbian water polo, who finished his magnificent career this summer after being called for his new duty, was member of Radnicki’s Euro Cup winning side back in April.

This triumph is a kind of consolation for Zvezda after they bowed out from the Champions League, having lost the decisive qualifier to Pro Recco (ITA) in a penalty shootout. It was Zvezda’s very first Super Cup win, while the trophy returned to Serbia after 2011 when Partizan had clinched this title.

Stella Rossa-Radnicki Kragujevac 9-8 (2-3, 4-2, 1-1, 2-2)
Stella Rossa: Sefik, S. Rasovic 2, Radjen 2, Ivosevic, Kljajevic, Vukcevic, Avramovic, V. Rasovic 1, Randjelovic, Vapenski 1, Prlainovic 2, Mann 1, Draksimovic. All. Savic
Radnicki: Radic, Buric 1, Popovic, Vuksanovic 1, Gak 2, Milicic, Ciric, Basara 1, Zlokovic 1, F. Filipovic 2, Markovic, D. Filipovic, S. Popovic. All. Jovovic

Last year's Champions League winners Crvena Zvezda have completed an ultimately successful 2013 year by clinching the European Super Cup in the city of Becej, Serbia on Saturday topping fellow Serbian side and last year's Euro Cup winners Radnicki 9-8. Goals by Andrija Prlainovic and Nikola Radjen in the fourth period proved decisive after Zvezda led 7-6 going into the final eight minutes. Radnicki managed to respond twice through goals by Srdjan Vuksanovic and Filip Filipovic but still fell short a goal to force a tie and penalty shootout. Slavo Gak's attempt for Radnicki was saved by Zvezda-goalie Denis Sefik. The loss for Radnicki is tough considering the better start they experienced taking a 1-3 lead in the opening quarter before Zvezda responded big time in the second term including three straight goals to turn around the deficit into what proved to be a decisive lead. The historical first Super Cup for the Belgrade based side completes a dominant 2013 year in which Crvena zvezda won all major trophies including the national championship, national cup and Champions League.
