Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, Hungary advance to U17 semifinals - Malta day 5
WaterpoloWorld | | | Thursday 12 September 2013, 12:08 | | | Tim Hartog |
The team of Italy is the first men's European Junior Championships semifinalist. The reigning world youth and junior champions held off Russia 6-8 in the first quaterfinal on Wednesday to set up a meeting with Montenegro who edged Spain 7-9 in a close contest later that day. A dominant second period (0-4) performance and led by Edoardo di Somma's game-high four goals the Italians created a decisive lead in the first half and prevailed in the second although Russia came back in the final term. Serbia was the second side to advance to the final four thanks to a convincing 10-3 victory over Turkey. The squads were levelled at quarter time (1-1) but then Serbia started to walk away and never was to be catched up by their opponents. Hungary reached the semis thanks to a thrilling extra time win over Croatia 13-12. Just in the second period of overtime Hungary secured their triumph and avoid a lottery-like penalty shoot-out. They will now face Serbia for a spot in the gold medal final on Sunday. Romania is still in the race to finish 9th. After falling short to reach the quarterfinals on Wednesday the Romanian boys responded by a close 11-10 win over Germany in the first game on Thursday. The victory was set up by a superior opening quarter performance in which Romania took a 3-0 lead. Germany reduced the deficit by two goals in the third period but the Romanians held on and will now place for a 9th place finish on Saturday. Greece will be the opponent in that battle after they convincgly got past France 13-5 in Thursday's second game. Today's fixtures and results are as follows:
