Crvena Zvezda, Barceloneta, Partizan, Jug present at Final Four
Waterpoloworld | | | Tuesday 30 April 2013, 17:58 | | | Tim Hartog |
Good news for the fans in Belgrade, Serbia. Crvena Zvezda, one of two powerhouses based in Serbia's capital, are the first to qualify for the 2013 Champions League Final Four tournament, to be held in their hometown. On Tuesday Szeged pushed the Serbs to the limit in an ultimate attempt to turn things around after the 5-7 win by Zvezda in game 1 in Hungary but failed to do so by just a single goal. Hungary's regular season winners walked away with a 10-11 victory in Belgrade but it was not enough. All despite a good start by the visitors who jumped out a 1-3 lead after the first quarter before Andrija Prlainovic and center Dusko Pijetlovic took their team by the hand in the late second and early third quarter in which Crvena Zvezda turned things around and even took a two-goal advantage: 7-5. From that point on the match stayed really close with Szeged not able to create the necessary gap of two goals or more. One goal apiece by Prlainovic and Strahinja Rasovic were enough for the home side to survive and secure their place in the Final Four tournament on May 31st.
Spanish reigning champions Barceloneta joined the Serbian side on Wednesday recording another win over Greek playoffs finalists Vouliagmeni 16-10. After the 3-8 victory in game 1 two weeks ago more than enough for the Spaniards to book their tickets to Belgrade. Barceloneta confirmed ther dominance over the Greek powerhouse running away to an early 7-2 lead and never looked back. Vouliagmeni pulled back a goal in the third period but lost all others and can now focus on the Greek title race where they will face Olympiakos. Marc Minguell was on target for Barceloneta netting five goals, being well assisted by center Josip Vrlic who scored four. Top shooter for Vouliagmeni was Angelos Vlachopoulos who netted a triple. The biggest news for the Final Four hosts came from Volgograd, Russia where Partizan held Spartak to a 5-all draw and secured themselves of a spot in the tournament they will be hosting in their Banjica outdoor pool. After beating the reigning Russian champs 11-6 in game 1 the draw was enough to qualify as Partizan will await a meeting with the winners of the Jug - Galatasaray series, to be played later tonight with the Croats in comfortable position after having won the first leg 5-12. The low scoring affair in Volgograd saw Partizan in good position at half time leading 'just' 0-2 and even after three periods as the Serbs maintained their two-goal advantage: 2-4. But the home side was not to give up on a nice result at home and stormed back from a 2-5 deficit to tie the game at 5 and close out their rather nice Champions League campaign on a positive note.
The fourth and final participant in Belgrade will be Jug Dubrovnik. The reigning Croatian champions proved clealry too strong for Galatasaray Istanbul and recorded two big wins, especially in game 2 on Wednesday at home where the Croatian side just rolled to a 18-3 victory. A big semi-final meeting with local heroes Partizan will await Jug in on the Final Four's first day. It was Montenegro Olympian Vjekoslav Paskovic who kept his Turkish employer in the race scoring twice in the first quarter in Dubrovnik before the home team walked away. Right from the start of the second quarter there was no holding back and only USA Olympian Jesse Smith managed to score a goal for the visitors. Aleksandar Ivovic was the high scorer for Jug netting four goals getting help from Miho Boskovic who scored three. The win was the twelfth straight for Jug who will enter the Final Four tournament with a perfect unbeaten 12-0-0 record, just the only team to do in this year's Champions League campaign.
