The U17 European Junior Championships this year will be incorporated in the 1st European Games, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan and both the boys and girls this weekend are busy qualifiying for the prestigious and exciting event. The action is in full swing in four different cities for the boys while three girls groups while in the girls competition only group A, played in France, was kicked off on Thursday already. Here France hopes to take the top spot in the group while Czech Republic and Great Britain hope to join them after an 8-8 draw in the head-to-head duel early Friday morning. In the men's competition the expected favourites all enjoyed comfortable openers on Thursday but it got closer in the first of two groups that has scheduled a double round on Friday, group B in Austria, where Slovakia won a close match over Turkey 12-13 pushing their case for the first spot in the group. On a busy Friday Greece and the Netherlands did so in group A while Malta and Great Britain look to battle who to join Germany to Baku out of group D.

The groups got some more composition on Saturday where the hosts in group A the Netherlands lost a key match-up to Ukraine 10-11 in the likely battle for 2nd place in the group although the Dutch can turn things around facing Greece on Sunday. The favourites made no mistake in group B but in group C France won the top match over Romania 6-8 now being close to claiming the top spot in the group. In group D the home fans had reason to cheer as Malta topped Great Britain in a close battle 6-7. With Germany running for first place Malta looks to be joining them en route to Baku. The top 2 sides of each group qualifies for the U17 European Junior Championships, or rather the water polo tournaments of the 1st European Games in Baku.

Considering the final classification of the Men’s European Junior Championship of Malta 2013 and the ranking of the Women’s European Junior Championship of Istanbul 2013, the teams directly qualified to the Euro Games proper are respectively the 1st to 7th placed teams at the Men’s Junior Champs 2013 (Montenegro, Serbia, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Russia, Spain plus Azerbaijan as organiser), and the 1st to 6th placed teams at the Women’s Junior Champs 2013 (Greece, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Russia).
