Serbia have retained their European title winning the 2014 European Championships in Budapest after putting up a dominant display in the gold medal final against hosts Hungary with a 7-12 final score as result. The championships is Serbia's second in a row after the team ended up victorious in the 2012 edition in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. For veterans Filip Filipovic and Slobodan Nikic this European title was already the fourth of their respective impressive careers. A jam packed Alfred Hajos stadium, filled with mostly Hungarian fans, was ready for the much anticipated rumble between the best two sides of the championships but instead saw Serbia coming out firing in the first half. After the first nervous minutes Nikola Radjen opened the scoring for Serbia finishing a man-up play with 3.31 remaining. And when Andrija Prlainovic netted his first shot of the game less than two minutes later, the Serbs were already up 0-2. Marton Vamos responded with a trademark free-throw shot for the response but saw Dusko Pijetlovic on the end of another well executed extra man play for the 1-3 quarter-time score. Thins got worse in the second half for the home side fans who now saw Serbia simplay dominating. Led by an oustanding goalie Gojko Pijetlovic their defence held Hungary to scoring just once while on the other end the goals were flying around up to an incredible 2-7 half-time score. Strikingly the same score as during the recent World League final which Serbia went on to win 6-10. That same course wasn't followed on Sunday, though. Hungary by the time the third quarter had arrived looked blown by looking at the scoreboard but were not giving in. Marton Szivos looked to ignite the crowd by scoring early in the third, after the goalkeeper substitution Hungary head coach Tibor Benedek was forced to make, had fired up the crowd in the second period. But the home side remained struggling with the tough Serbian defence that paved the way for the seemingly comfortable advantage they had obtained and were not to give away. Even a late push by the Magyars in that third session could change that. Daniel and younger brother Daniel Varga hit consecutive shots to crawl back to a 6-9 score but in a display of resillience the Serbian answer in the final period was overwhelming. Three straight goals (2 by Filipovic, 1 by Gocic) had the match decided with still three minutes remaining looking at a 6-12 score. A six-goal difference in the European gold medal final. The Serbian side started playing out the clock more and more but did not let go on the defence focus which kept Hungary from a possible late surge. Marton Vamos' hit with just seven seconds on the clock just changed the final score as Serbian celebrations had already started, including the Serbian president Tomislav Nikolic and sports Minister and former great Vanja Udovicic in the stands. And so it happened that a team that lost to Hungary 6-8 and drew level with Croatia 8-8 in the group stage survived by beating Spain and went to claim the gold medal in dominant fashion. As an independent nation the Serbs celebrated their third European championships after the 2006 triump at home in Belgrade.

Italy are the winners of the men's 2014 European Championships bronze medal. The rejuvenated side held off Montenegro in the medal match 11-9 on Sunday to finish off a successful tournament that featured just one loss with a third-place final ranking. Much the like the team's group stage encouter (6-6) Sunday's match-up close and could have gone either way for three quarters. The Italians in the fourth quarter decided the outcome in their favour in the game's final phase thanks to consecutive goals from Matteo Aicardi and a converted penalty from standout Alex Giorgetti to lead 11-9. The side's excellent defence, led by experienced goalie Stefano Tempesti, held the Montenegrins from scoring in the final minutes as the Allesandro Campagna coached side started celebrating a deserved bronze medal.
