A goal by young lefthander Ante Viskovic and brave defensive work gave Jug a tough win over Pro Recco in the Champions League 5th round big match-up on Wednesday. With the victory the Croatian champs are now in second place tied with Barceloneta who lost their first game, in Piraeus, Greece to Olympiacos. The game in Dubrovnik was close from the beginning. Goals were exchanged and although Jug was the first to get in front most of the times a victory was never sure. The contest got more tense towards the fourth quarter in which both sides emphasized their defensive duties. It led to just one goal but that proved to be decisive. Deep into the final period youngster Ante Viskovic connected on a well executed man-up to give Jug an 8-7 lead, much to the crowd's satisfaction. Pro Recco in the remainder tried hard and got multiple good looks but could not convert on two consecutive extra man possessions (top scorers Pietro Figlioli and Mladan Janovic) followed by the exclamation point, made by Jug goalkeeper Marko Bijac who performed a great save to deny Federico Lapenna scoring from just in front of the goal. In the final seconds Alekandar Ivovic blew one from distance but his attempt was blocked as Jug held on and celebrated a tough but important victory over the 2012 champs.
Barceloneta have suffered their first defeat of the Champions League campaign. In a tough match in Greece home team Olympiacos took their first points by upsetting the group leaders 9-8 on Wednesday. Olympiacos took the first step towards their striking victory in the second quarter walking away to a 5-1 lead before Barceloneta got more involved and pulled back as the game progressed. Although the home side led 8-5 going into the final quarter, the victory did not came easy as Barceloneta scored thrice in the final period looking to at least draw level. However Olympiacos held on - despite a man down in the final possession of the game for Barceloneta - for their first win topping the reigning Spanish champs 9-8, led by Georgios Ntoskas' three goals. Albert Español finished as top shooter for Barceloneta netting three as well.
