Kazan, Mornar lead Euro Cup quarterfinalists

The final day of the Euro Cup 2nd round finished some close calls in the race for the quarterfinal spots in either of the 4 groups. Just Mornar (group B, pictured) managed to complete a perfect record winning all matches and finish first in the group. The second place battle in group A however, claimed by Acquachiara, came after a tie with hosts Vouliagmeni in points (10). The Italians' 7-11 victory over the Greek squad earlier this week gave them the advantage and thus a spot in the quarterfinals. Vouliagmeni's 6-6 draw with Jadran Herceg Novi on Sunday morning must have leave the Greek side bittered as a win would have meant the 2nd place in the group. In group B Romanians Steaua Bucharest secured the second place and a quarterfinals berth by rolling past home side Valletta 6-21 on Sunday. Despite Montpellier beating Primorac 6-13, the French had to settle for 3rd place. In group C the top two spots were taken by two sides tied at 10 points. And after the 8-8 draw between Olympic Nice and Posillipo in their head-to-head match, the better goal difference (+19 for the French, + 14 for Posillipo) saw the hosts taking the top spot. The same situation occured in group D where Waspo Hannover and Savona took the quarterfinals berths. The sides drew level 10-10 against each other and the German won the goal difference battle (+23 and +11 for Savona) to finish 1st. The quarterfinals will be played on 29 November (leg 1) and 17 December (leg 2). The draw is expected to be held by LEN early next week.

In the early session of day 2 of the Euro Cup two out of the three sides that made their first appearances were successful. Posillipo faced Kirishi in a top match-up in group C and prevailed to top the Russians 9-8. In the opening match on Friday in Nice, France White Sharks Hannover and Sète gained their first point drawing level at 10-10. Meanwhile in group D Vojvodina was in action for the first time and held Ligamus Tbilisi to claiming just three goals winning the low-scoring affair 3-6. Shooter Dusan Vasic was important for the Serbian side scoring 3 goals. The second game saw German Waspo 98 Hannover grabbing the group's top spot as they held off Dynamo Astrakhan 4-6. In group B Mornar also gained their second win in 2 games this time topping Montpellier 9-11. The following match saw Steaua Bucharest getting their first win using a superior 3rd quarter to beat Primorac 8-6. In the first match of day 2 in group A, in Vouliagmeni, Sintez Kazan collected a second straight win by beating Jadran Herceg Novi playing without centre-forward Boris Zlokovic in convincing fashion: 7-11. The lead and therewith victory by the Russians was never in danger as Russian national team top scorer at the 2014 European Championships, Konstantin Stepanyuk, led the way in this match-up scoring 3 goals. Dutch side UZSC gained their first win as they defeated German Esslingen 6-9, behind 4 goals from captain Roeland Spijker. Acquachiara also took their first victory battling back against hosts Vouliagmeni who took an early 4-1 lead but were overpowered in the remainder as the Italians held their opponents scoreless in the following pair of quarter to post a 4-goal win in the end: 7-11. Antonio Petkovic led all scorers with 5.

Most of the groups played double sessions on Friday. In group B the evening session belonged to Montpellier and Mornar who both enjoyed comfortable or even dominating matches with the same final score: 18-5. The French champions rolled past home side Valletta after a 4-4 score at quarter-time while Mornar had no trouble overcoming Primorac in another one-sided affair on display in Malta's national pool. Mornar now comfortably leads the group unbeaten after three games.

Posillipo continued their run in group C's evening session gaining a second win, this time beating Germans White Sharks Hannover despite a late comeback 14-9. Aleksandar Radovic led his team scoring 4 goals as the game seemed over and done with after three periods: 12-4. The Germans however scored 5 goals in the final term to cut the deficit into more acceptable proportion. Home side Olympic Nice followed the example also winning their second match-up as they managed to defeat Russian favourites Kirishi 9-7 thanks to a strong first half and 5-2 lead at half-time. Nice and Posillipo now lead the group with 6 points out of 2 games.

Savona joined Waspo Hannover in winning both games so far as they got the better of Vojvodina in the first of two evening session matches in group D at home in Savona. Behind Luca Damonte's 5 hits, the home side already sealed the deal in the third term and was never endangered. A scoring festival in the final game of the day saw Dynamo Astrakhan beating Ligamus Tbilisi 14-12 for their points.

On day 1 of the Euro Cup it was Mornar who fell behind to Steaua Bucharest in the opening match of group B in Malta early on. The Croats however, behind 4 goals from Jerko Marinic Kragic, dominated the pair of following quarters as they went on to win 12-8 for a rolling start of their quest to finish with the first 2. In the second encounter Primorac held off hosts Valletta 8-12 with Janko Krivokapic netting 5 shots. The top match-up in group A in Greece, featuring Acquachiara and Jadran Herceg Novi finished in a 9-9 tie. Jadran looked to have the better hands in the first half but that lead was virtually erased in the third period. A 7-goal display in the final term by both sides saw Acquachiara levelling. Sintez Kazan kicked things off by beating Dutch representative UZSC 7-11 while hosts Vouliagmeni enjoyed a comfortable opener rolling past Esslingen from Germany 14-3. Meanwhile in group C, in Nice, France, it was Kirishi who trashed White Sharks Hannover 19-6 with centre-forward Sasa Masic taking off for 6 goals. The all-French encounter saw home side Olympic Nice posting a surprising dominant win over their domestic rivals: 11-4. And finally in group D hosts Savona were up first facing Russian squad Dinamo Astrakhan. The visitors took an early 0-2 lead but then saw Savona gradually taking control as they turned things around in the final period to eventually win 9-7. Waspo Hannover rolled past Georgian champs Ligamus Tbilisi. Holding their opponents scoreless the entire first half, the earlier Champions League qualification participant won 15-5.

Euro Cup underway

The Euro Cup tournament will get underway on Thursday in four groups across Europe including multiple Champions League qualification drop-outs. Without last year's finalists the teams will start their quest to succeed Russian champions Spartak Volgograd as winners this season. Finishing in the top 2 of the respective group is the objective for the the ambitious sides in order to reach the home-and-away based quarterfinals. Several favourites were drawn in different groups although in some cases interesting battles can be expected. One of them in group A where no less than 6 teams will play near Athens, Greece this weekend. Here, last year semifinalists Acquachiara, Montenegrin champions Jadran Herceg Novi and Russian runners-up Sintez Kazan will be joined by hosts Vouliagmeni, Dutch representative UZSC and German squad Esslingen. With just two spots for the next round available, it will be interesting to see who will survive.

In group B, played in the national pool of Malta, several underdogs face an excellent opportunity of getting into the quarterfinals. Surely among the favourites is French top side Montpellier while regional league member Mornar and 2009 Euro League winners Primorac will face revived Romanian top squad Steaua Bucharest in the battle for the pair of available quaterfinal spots. Hosts Valletta will be looking for an upset completing an 'open' group with possible exciting final scores as a result.

The only domestic match-up is included in group C, played in Nice, France where the home side saw fellow countrymen from Dauphins Sète being drawn in their group. Behind French powerhouses Marseille and Montpellier these two teams are among those battling for 3rd or 4th place in France and this weekend will meet once more. Experienced Italian squad Posillipo, semifinalist in last year's Euro Cup edition, can be considered favourites after a dissapointing Champions League qualification campaign. White Sharks Hannover are the outsiders while Kinef Kirishi, with Montenegrin national team member centre-forward Sasa Misic as their offensive leader, is the unknown force but could surprise friend and foe.

Home side Savona enjoys a favourite role in group D this weekend. The Italian squad hosts several outsiders and, on paper, should be able to stay unbeaten in the four matches to come. It's likely to be objective of the team that gained 6 points in 4 rounds of domestic league action so far. Main other contenders include German Champions League dropout Waspo Hannover who have their eyes on a good result in the Euro Cup after downing Spartak Volgograd out of European contention in a tight Champions League qualification group A, hosted by the Germans two weeks ago. A young Serbian side (Vojvodina) will be able to test theirselves and gain valuable international experience while Georgian champions Ligamus Tbilisi, knocked out of the opening round of the Champions League, will exploit their chances in the 2nd tier Euro Cup competition. Russians Dynamo Astrakhan are the outsiders here.
