Champions League, Preliminaries, Day 8 – Summary

Eger takes huge step towards historic first F6

Eger (HUN) was the big winner of the round as its main rivals in the hunt for the last remaining berth – Olympiacos (GRE) and Radnicki (SRB) – both lost, so the Hungarian champion is on its way to a historic first appearance in the Final Six. In Group B the three-horse race for the top spot narrowed to two as Jug (CRO) failed to win in Istanbul.
With Recco (ITA) already having clinched the top spot and Barceloneta (ESP) enjoying a granted berth as host of the Final Six, only one spot remained on offer in Group A, but before Day 8 all the other four clubs had a chance to grab it. But this round cut the field: Brescia is out and Olympiacos is on the verge to bid farewell its Final Six dreams. Radnicki is still in the hunt but trails by four points to Eger (HUN).
The Hungarians won a crucial game against Brescia (ITA), thanks to their goalie, Branislav Mitrovic who came up with a very special performance: his saving percentage was 78%. The Serb’s 18 saves was paired some outstanding offensive play in front, resulting the decisive win.
Barceloneta came from behind (2-5) to beat Radnicki: the title-holders scored two goals in the last 64 seconds to break the deadlock after 7-7. Olympiacos did its best to end Recco’s magnificent march, the Greeks netted 4 connecting goals to take a 5-3 lead in the second period and was still 7-6 up before the final period. But Recco saved the best to the last quarter, destroying the hosts with 6 action goals.
In Group B Jug Dubrovnik produced a minor miracle by scoring twice in the last 21 seconds and saving the game to a tie against Galatasaray (TUR). The Turks, especially their Serbian-Montenegrin phalanx did a fine job this time, seemed the winner at 12-10 with 46 seconds to go, but Jug somehow climbed back to 12-12. However, by dropping two points Jug is out of the race for the top spot – though their Final Six berth is not in danger.
The battle for the first place is down to Szolnok (HUN) and Rijeka (CRO): both sides collected the three points in their respective away matches. The Croats didn’t leave any doubt who were the better side in Berlin, home of Spandau (GER). The Hungarians, led by Denes Varga (5 goals), had some headaches at the beginning in Belgrade as Partizan rushed to a 4-0 lead in five minutes, but Szolnok switched gears and responded with a 1-9 rolling and secured a calm finish to the match. Now they enjoy a 3-point lead and if the next round brings the expected results, they will have a showdown against Primorje in Rijeka on the last day of the prelims.

Eger makes strong push for Final Six

Plenty of action and excitement across Europe on day 8 of the Champions League preliminary round with ZF-Eger as one of the, if not the, winner of the day. The Hungarian champions held off Brescia 10-5 to take firm grip of 2nd place in group A and make a strong push for the last available Final Six ticket. Fellow competitior Radnicki meanwhile fell to defending champions Barceloneta 9-7 so that the Hungarian squad has good hands going into the final two preliminary rounds. In Hungary Balazs Erdelyi led the home team with 3 goals as they took control of the match in the second period and saw Brescia unable to turn the tide. In the third period the visitors crawled back to 5-4 but two straight goals by Balint Lorincz and Boris Vapenski had restored the order. Meanwhile in Barcelona Radnicki could not follow Eger to stay close in the battle for the last Final Six ticket. Barceloneta even overcame a 1-3 start to the match as Felipe Perone (3 goals), Albert Español (2) and Marc Minguell (2) led their team to a comeback which was completed in the final quarter by scoring two unanswered goals that would seal the 2-goal victory as Barceloneta overtook Radnicki for 3rd place in the group, although the Final Six hosts are automatically qualified for the final tournament. Still leading the group though are Pro Recco. The Italian favourites are already sure of the Final Six, more or less sure of the top spot in the group and thus directly semifinal qualification in Barcelona, and on Wednesday extended their unbeaten streak by topping Olympiacos in Greece 8-12. Despite a red-hot Blai Mallarach who produced 4 of his team's 8 goals, the visitors from Italy walked away from their opponents in the 4th quarter thanks to a big 1-6 run and therewith secured the seemingly comfortable but in any case, solid win. Matteo Aicardi and Filip Filipovic led the winners' team scorers with 3 each.

Also more than enough action in group B despite the fact that the top 3 teams and Final Six participants out of the group are already known. On Wednesday Jug needed a buzzer-beating goal from youngster Ante Viskovic to draw level with Galatasaray in Istanbul 12-12. Viskovic, who threw the ball away in the game versus Szolnok two weeks ago with just 5 seconds remaining after a free-throw whistle and therewith caused a penalty shot which lost the game for Jug, this time was on the positive side for his team in the dying seconds as he scored the goal that would avoid an upset but instead saved a point for the favourite Croatian side who now saw Primorje and Szolnok walking away in the standings. Primorje was not to be surprised in Berlin beating Spandau with ease, 5-15, while Szolnok trailed Partizan 4-2 at quarter-time but turned things around in the second period and walked away in the 4th term to gain a solid 7-13 victory to remain group leaders. Denes Varga was on fire scoring 5 goals for the visitors from Hungary. Dusan Mandic and young centre-back Nikola Jaksic netted 3 each for Partizan.

Day 9 of the prelims will be played on Saturday 18 April with the race for the last Final Six ticket out of group A possibly to be decided already.

PR Champions League Day 7 25/03/15

Champions League, Prelims, Day 7 – Summary
Hosts rule, win six out of six
For the first time in the prelims, all six home teams managed to win – as a result, Pro Recco (ITA) has not only secured its participation in the Final Six but also clinched the top spot in Group A and a place in the semifinals. In Group B Szolnok (HUN) is safely through and virtually both Croatian sides (Primorje, Jug) have reached the Final Six – however, the battle for the first place promises further excitements for the remaining three rounds.
Pro Recco seems as formidable as ever: the Italians simply demolished the title-holder. Barceloneta (ESP) was knocked down right in the first period (5-1) and Recco didn’t stop here, they went on to earn a 17-7 win, scoring 32 goals against the Champions League winner in two matches.
Since second-seeded Eger (HUN) lost to Olympiacos (GRE) in Piraeus, Recco secured finishing first despite three rounds remaining and a spot in the semis in the Final Six. The clash in Greece was a tough one, a 4-0 rush in the second period was decisive: though Eger tried to climb back from 2-6 down, Olympiacos managed to keep the lead until the end, grabbing its last chance to stay in the hunt.
Radnicki (SRB) won its third straight home game, this time they beat Brescia (ITA) and that strengthened the Serbs’ hope to make the Final Six again – but they will need points from the away games where they stand 0/3 so far.
In Group B the Final Six berths have been decided, only Spandau (GER) has a rather slight hope but mathematics don’t score from 6 on 5s when they will face the top three ranked sides in the following match days. The Germans won one of the most exciting encounters of the prelims, full of twists and turns, but finally they downed Galatasaray (TUR).
Primorje Rijeka (CRO) did a professional job against Partizan (SRB): the young visitors held tight for two and a half quarters but then the hosts jumped to a 10-6 lead from 7-6 and the Serbs couldn’t narrow the gap afterwards.
The top spot was at stake in the showdown between Szolnok (HUN) and Jug (CRO). It was a real thriller, the Hungarian-Serbian mix of the hosts stormed to a 4-0 lead but deep into the fourth the Croats equalised at 7-7. Still, they lost after their young player, Ante Viskovic forgot the new rule and threw the ball away upon a free-throw close to his goal inside the last minute – from this season a penalty has to be called for this foul and Milan Aleksic converted it 5 seconds before the end. With this win Szolnok is safely through and had three-point advantage in the race for the first place.

Milan Aleksic shoots Szolnok past Jug

Just when the composition of the tense group A in the Champions League looked to have taken its form after 6 rounds of play, things were back to 'far from over' on day 7 Wednesday as Radnicki defeated Brescia at home 13-10 on a better first half while Olympiacos struck back after a recent dissapointing strech in the Champions League by topping group's 2nd seed ZF-Eger at home in Piraeus 8-6, fueled by a dominating 2nd-quarter performance and critical game's final goal by Olympiacos centre-forward Christodoulos Kolomvos with just 0.18 on the clock to decide the outcome in Olympiacos favour. Fellow centre-forward Konstantinos Mourkis and Spanish lefthander Blai Mallarach led the scoring for the winners with 2 apiece. Norbert Hosnyanszky netted 3 for Eger who remain in 2nd place, the last spot to qualify for the Final Six out of group A, but do see Radnick now trailing just a single point. Radnicki managed to stay in the race by holding off Brescia in a tough match-up. But thanks to a fine start and better first half, the home side established a lead that they would maintain throughout despite some fierce opposition by the Italians who knew the importance of this match-up. Radnicki however, led by Nikola Dedovic' 4 goals, did not let go and secured a valuable 3-goal victory that puts them in 3rd place, right behind 2nd seed Eger, while Brescia drops to last place in the group's standings.

Meanwhile in group B, Primorje did what was expected but faced a tough Partizan side who put up quite a game for three quarters, before the home side secured a seemingly comfortable win in the final period thanks to a 4-1 run to post a 14-8 final score in their favour. Romanian centre-forward Cosmin Radu and Sandro Sukno led all scorers with 3. A balanced attack by Partizan saw 8 different goal scorers on their scoresheet.

Milan Aleksic emerged as game winner in the biggest match-up of the day, played in Szolnok, as he shot the home team past Jug Dubrovnik in the seconds of the match to now be sole leaders of group B, hinting to qualify for the Final Six semi-finals directly. The game in Szolnok was finished with 3 penalty shots. The second, converted by Jug veteran Nikola Janovic, who shot home his second of the night, brought the score back to a tied situation: 7-7. However, Ante Viskovic made a controversial penalty foul in the tense final seconds throwing away the ball upon a Hungarian free throw which in the new rules means an automatic penalty. Clearly the young Jug leftie was not aware of that. Milan Aleksic stepped up and hit what became the game winner. Aleksic, Marton vamos and Denes Varga led the home team scorers with 2 apiece. Janovic was joined by Miho Boskovic as Jug top scorers, also scoring twice each.

In the battle to avoid last place in group B German representative Spandau came up with a close 10-9 win over Galatasaray in their second victory of this campaign. A pivotal goal by Moritz Oeler in the last minute, to give the home team a 10-8 lead, proved to be the game winner, as the response by Galatasaray's Filip Kljajevic, twenty seconds later, came too late for the Turkish champions who now close out the group standings with still just 1 win so far.

Elsewhere Pro Recco simply marched on. Hosting reigning European Champions Barceloneta, this year's title favourites Recco dominated from start to finish and extended their unbeaten run with a 17-7 victory. Matteo Aicardi led the 10 goal scorers of the home side with 3 goals. Francisco Fernandez produced the same offence for Barceloneta who were outplayed in the first half but managed to score 7 goals with Recco slowing down their brutal pace and defence a bit. Recco now also theoratically is qualified for the Final Six, having secured first place in group A. Barceloneta, as host of the event, was already automatically qualified. The race for 2nd place in the group will determine the 3rd representative to be present in Barcelona late May.

Day 8 will be played on Wednesday 8 April.
