Budapest to host FINA World Championships in 2017

Lausanne (SUI), March 11, 2015 - FINA is pleased to announce that Budapest, Hungary, will host the 17th FINA World Championships and FINA World Masters Championships in July 2017, replacing the city of Guadalajara (MEX).

On this important occasion, FINA would like to thank the Hungarian Prime-Minister Viktor Orban and the President of the Hungarian Swimming Federation Tamas Gyarfas for their support and contribution to the organisation of FINA’s major event in 2017.

FINA would also like to express its gratitude and appreciation to other National Federations/Cities that had shown their interest in staging these Championships.

“We are very happy to be in Budapest in 2017 and we are sure that the local authorities and organisers will host a great competition. Hungary is a country of Sport and true passion for Aquatics – the FINA World Championships and FINA World Masters Championships in two years’ time will consolidate and reinforce this tradition”, declared the FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.

Budapest had been previously awarded the right to host the 2021 FINA World Championships and FINA World Masters Championships and a new bidding procedure will now be open for these events.

Big week for Hungarian water polo

The midweek round 22 was overshadowed by several announcements made this week by LEN and FINA.
Both organisations had some decisions to make regarding hosting of the LEN Champions League Final Six for the coming 2 years, and the FINA World Championships of 2017 after Mexico was unable to make the required financial guarantees. The European Championships of 2014 held in Budapest were a fantastic event and impressed water polo fans and officials worldwide. We all remember the unforgettable images of 7,000 Hungarian fans on in the Alfréd Hajós stadium on Margaret Island. With this success in mind, and a brand new hyper modern swimming arena already being built and supposedly finished in 2016, Budapest seemed the perfect candidate to snoop up yet another major tournament. Earlier in the week LEN appointed Budapest as location for the 2016 and 2017 finals of water polo’s most prestigious club tournament. Defending Hungarian champions ZF-Eger were selected as official hosts for this event and are automatically qualified to participate (like Barceloneta in 2014 and 2015).
